Drawn toward the glare of life light, I meander in the / amniotic amenity… Suspended in the liquid of Mama’s love is all could ever want. And yet I still yearn for more… for something other… Overcome by the unknown, I slip through her passage and into the white-hot noise and scream. I know I’ll spend the rest of my life in vain… just trying to get back into the womb. Natural steam bath near San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

San Ignacio Lagoon is one of the best places in the world to see Gray whales and their calves up close. During the calving season you can go out into the lagoon in a small boat (called a panga), and after a short wait, the whale mum and calf will come up to you. They (mainly the calf) love to rub themselves against the boats and also to be scratched! You really get a close up look into their eyes! Then, just when you start to feel at one with each them, they blow salt water in your face and all over your camera! But it’s worth it!!! / / You may also get to see some great breaching too. / / (San Ignacio Lagoon – Baja California) / / / >< / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

The Bisti is a 45,000 acre National Wilderness that is an ancient seabed and is now full of hoodoos, striated rock formations, petrified wood and dinosaur bones, and other examples of tortured geography of the most surreal sort. The Bisti is located in Northwest New Mexico, near the Four Corners town of Farmington. On this occasion, six of us hiked in to the Bisti just before sundown, on the night of the full moon. We packed in a scant two miles, but the undulating and unforgiving landscape (and the frequent photo breaks) made it seem much further. Along the way, we encountered another group of Bisti chroniclers led by Carole Devillers, frequent contributor to National Geographic magazine and one-time guide for Jacques Cousteau. Pentax K20D, 1/3 second @ F5.6, ISO 200, 160mm Using a Scott Kelby technique, I shot the moon separately. Then, in Paint Shop Pro XII, I copied an adjustment layer and converted that to B&W and then to infrared. Then I reduced the opacity to let in a little color from the bottom layer. Pentax K20D, 1/250 @ F8, ISO 200, 300mm.
Chimney Rock and the Ghost Ranch are probably going to be a recurring theme in this stage of my photographic journey. It is very hard to find a landscape location in New Mexico with more context. Perhaps even in all the American southwest. So, another entry, this one taken with a Pentax 645 medium format film camera. I’ve had this camera since February 2009 and have quite a bit of cash and sweat equity invested in it. I’ve lugged it and its lenses and flash attachment over many, many miles of desert terrain across four states and have spent a small fortune on film and processing and prints and scans, not to mention buying my own film scanner. And this is it, the one image that pleases me from the whole lot. To say that my medium format experiment is not going well is an understatement; however, this one shows me what might be if I can relearn the craft of film photography before it bankrupts me. And If there is to be just one, I am happy it occurred at Ghost Ranch. Pentax 645, Velvia 50 film, Pentax 45mm lens, settings not recorded.

I’ve shot a lot of southwest doorways. The colors, the textures, and the contrasts combine to make this my personal favorite. The warmth and richness of the wood offset the coolness of the adobe nicely and the flowerpots add a nice welcoming touch. This is a 3-shot HDR. Pentax K20D, 1/60 @ F6.3, ISO 100, 200mm
