Lundy Canyon has no natural lakes. At the mouth of the canyon there is a manmade lake and if you go deeper into the canyon you will come across this series of beaver ponds. This is the only place in Sierra Nevada with beavers since they were hunted so much in the past. Beyond the beaver pond you can see a waterfall coming down from the upper parts of the canyon. The red metamorphic rock is not typical to most of the mountain range which is mostly composed of granite. This photo is looking up the canyon and if you were to keep going on the trail you would end up in the backcountry of Yosemite. On the left you can see part of Mount Scowden, a little right of center is Shepherd Ridge, and on the right is a subpeak of Mount Excelsior.

I woke up one morning to catch the sunrise at Convict Lake and on my return trip to my campsite I decided to venture down McGee Canyon. It was still fairly early in the morning and I was exploring the area when this pack train wandered by, presumably on their way to bring supplies to some people in the upper areas of the canyon. The mountains of McGee Canyon are composed of metamorphic rock. On the left is Mount Baldwin and on the right is Mount Aggie.

This is a subpeak of Mount Morgan I guess, it’s unnamed. I was driving down a dirt road that leads into the canyon and the early morning shadows on this mountain just drew me in. I got out and took quite a few photos trying to capture it best. I think B&W works well with such a contrasty scene.

Here’s a shot of what a ladybug looks like and it’s coming out of its metamorphous. I thought this looked really cool and the first time I have ever caught this as a photo. I hiked a little ways up the trail a little bit before dusk. I had scouted out this area last year and knew I had to come back. The waterfalls were flowing very heavy due to the early spring conditions and the Aspens were just starting to get their leaves back. This photo doesn’t truly capture the magic of the place. I was standing on a large cliff and downstream of this waterfall are a series of beaver dams and lodges. They are only active at dawn and dusk and I was lucky enough to see them gathering twigs and bringing them back to their lodge. I accidentally spooked one and it slapped its tail against the water, startling five nearby deer out of the forest.

The Barrier Ranges in far-western NSW, is a remote, harsh environment, that will now be the home to one of the world’s largest wind farms: the Silverton Wind Farm. With around 600 turbines proposed, the NSW Government approved Stage 1 of the project (around 300 turbines) in June 2009 which will provide enough power for 450,000 houses! The image is best viewed large, and doesnt really do this massive landscape justice!
