If you’re an artist or designer looking for some free hi res textures to use in you work, I am now giving away my personal textures for others to use in their work. These textures are completely free and can be used for commercial and non-commercial work. / If you could help spread the word about these free textures, I would be very grateful. / I’m also giving away free copies of my book to certain people who are of particular help in promoting these textures & my website. / Textures are available from: / http://www.ParableVisions.com Enjoy, - Cameron Gray

I didn’t really know what to call this :-) Probably aimed at portraits, but you could try it on other things to see how it turns out. The image is brought to us by Orbán Ferenc over at the Stock Exchange site. All the settings used are relevant to this file 800 X 600@72dpi, they will change if you are using a higher res image …. and the technique probably works better on a higher res. Here we go. Open the start image, or one of your own, and duplicate it then close the original. Duplicate the image by dragging it to the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette or press Ctrl + J on the keyboard. Change the blend mode to Overlay and then go to Filter>Other>High Pass. You can see that I have chosen a radius of 4 for this image. You are going to do another High Pass later on, but this should do for now. Remember, if you are working on a higher res image the numbers will have to be larger. Now you are going to add a Gradient Map adjustment layer. Before you do that, check that your f/ground and b/ground colours are set to their defaults i.e. black and white. Once you have the colours to their default, click on the Create New Adjustment Layer at the bottom of the layers palette and choose Gradient Map. Click on the Gradient (see image) to get the dialogue box. You should now have the dialogue box visible and you can start to make some adjustments. Usin the bottom Color Stops drag the black triangle in till the Location reads 15% – drag the white stop in till it reads 95% and move the Color Midpoint till it reads 55%. These are just the settings I chose, you can change them if you like. Once you have it as you like, click OK in the Gradient Editor and then OK in the Gradient Map to accept. Now you are going to do a Stamp Visible. There are several ways that you can do this – making sure that you have the Gradient Adjustment layer active you can hit the Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E keys and the 3 layers will be merged into one. Or you can create a new blank layer above the Gradient Map Layer, hold down the Alt key go to the little downward facing triangle at top of the layers palette and select Merge Visible – don’t let go of the Alt key until it has merged. Change the blend mode of this layer to Overlay. Go to Filter>Other>High Pass and you can punch in the number I have, or choose one of your own. If you hold down the Alt key and click on the eyeball next to the background layer, you can see the changes you have made so far. With the Alt key still held down click on the eyeball again to view all of the layers. You could stop there if you wanted to, but you can also do a couple of other things. Making sure that you are working on the top most layer, go to the new adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette and choose Solid Color. I chose a blue colour (see image below) and then change the blend mode to colour and you’ll probably have to take the opacity down as well. I took the opacity down to 15%. To further enhance this, you could then create a new blank layer at the top of the layer stack, grab your Elliptical Marquee Tool, hold down the Shift Key to get a circle shape, go to Select>Inverse and then fill the selection with black (or some other colour). Press Ctrl + D to deselect and then go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and give it a really high blur. I did about 60 on this image. Go back to Filter> and choose Gaussian Blur from the top to repeat the filter, or you could press Ctrl + F on the keyboard. I then took the opacity of the layer down to 50% – and here is the final image and then a comparison image.

Last Friday, January 9th, a car hit the gas instead of the brake and drove into our building where I work. It was my office right where I sit that my husbands aunt hit. I have 2 metal desks in my office and the car shoved both desks 3 feet which is as far as they could go because the bigger desk had been shoved, the corner of the big desk had been shoved into the opposit wall. If I had had a wooden desk or even 2 wooden desks I wouldn’t be here today. I had luckily pulled out the middle drawer right in front of me to get something out and was scooted back against the oak desk that sits behind me when the car hit the building. I just remember 3 things: I heard a big, loud bang, then the window casing fell on my arm and then I saw this gray car still trying to get inside. I don’t remember anything else. I got out of my chair evidently and said “OH MY GOSH!!!” then after I realized what had happened I started crying and cussing – and I DON’T USUALLY CUSS! I am ok except for some chiropractic adjustments to make my spine all up and down – feel better and my arm and legs. Atleast I am alive! oh and my husbands aunt is ok – just has some very sore knees. She still thinks she can drive ok and will be very upset if anyone tries to take her drivers license and key away..
THANK YOU HOSTS of this great group for this Feature!! I am well pleased to receive this!

What started out with piss poor planning… ended up a fun night Originally intending to catch a bit of experimental electronic folk, I turned up to the Art House with my friend Seana, to a large number of tattooed types in black tshirts…. METAL NIGHT! My gig guide reading skills need serious improvement So, not being a massive metal head, I haven’t been to a show like that for years. Regardless, I had a blast, the bands were great, the crowd were hot and were having a great time. Here is some shots of local lads House vs Hurricane. They liked what I’ve done, and schedule allowing, I should be catching them again in a few weeks to get some more shots of them in action Here is what I got from the night…. House vs Hurricane ...and, for the record, I’m blaming metal mayhem for chipping the lens on my glasses, not the amount of beer that I consumed on the night blah :)

Hey Everyone, I haven’t yet written a journal entry yet, mainly because I’m lazy and also because Lorie has been doing such a good job of it. But maybe it’s time to step forward a bit and let you in on a bit more about me. Many of you have left great comments about my cartooning and artwork, which is very encouraging indeed. Sometimes when inspiration is low, getting some supportive feedback can light the fire under by butt to work again. I know Lorie appreciates it massively as well. Basically my style is the sum of my influences, mostly from underground greats like Vaughn Bode and Robert Crumb. I also love silent animation of the twenties and look to early horror films for inspiration also. And speaking of horror, my 9 year old daughter Eve has been giving us some great ideas for horror and zombie based designs lately. Rarely have I ever been so proud in my time as a parent. The main thing in my life is music. I’ve been obsessed with it for a damn long time now, and it just gets more intense the older I get. When I’m not drawing, I play guitar, write music reviews, download old, rare albums and upload my writing to music sites like Rate Your Music. Here’s the link should you wanna check out my page. My activity in it is intense enough that Eve can identify different strains of heavy metal, just from her own listening experience. She doesn’t particularly like it, but she knows what it is, and that’s a start. I’m also interested in religion and history, especially when they include the more morbid periods in history. Where there’s torture, heresy, disease and blasphemy, you’ll find me as well. At least figuratively speaking. So there you go, my first entry! Any thoughts, comments or rotten tomatoes are welcome and encouraged, so let ‘em fly! Peace, Mike
