I regularly check out the Astronomy Picture of the Day. Today’s image shows a 6-hour exposure of a Messier marathon. Fascinating!

  • Messier 74 is a face-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Pisces. The galaxy contains two clearly-defined spiral arms and is therefore used as an archetypal example of a Grand Design Spiral Galaxy. The galaxy’s low surface brightness makes it the most difficult Messier object for amateur astronomers to observe. However, the relatively large angular size of the galaxy and the galaxy’s face-on orientation make it an ideal object for professional astronomers who want to study spiral arm structure and spiral density waves.

  • M13 his an easy to observe globular cluster in Hercules. It is the most brilliant visible from the north hemisphere. At this time you can see almost at the zenith (I’m at almost 45° N). You can see it with a simple binocular. You will recognize it by the two surrounding star which form an isosceles triangle with it. Their are the two most brilliant star on my photo. / Yesterday, M13 was on the APOD with almost the framing as me but way better quality ! 9 exposures of 3 minutes on a too short night of June. The worst autoguiding session.Canon EOS 350D on 150/750 Newtonian telescope (f=750mm F/5). Overload EQ5 equatorial mount.
