The colors of southern Utah are amazing and a photographer’s dream. Established in 1909, Zion National Park is Utah’s first national park and will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2009. Checkerboard Mesa shows the weathered hide of our living earth near the eastern entrance of Zion National Park, Utah. The eastern part of Zion is slickrock country and is filled with arches, alcoves, hoodoo formations, and wind and water sculpted rock. Checkerboard Mesa is a mountain of Navaho sandstone and is naturally sculpted.
Upper Mesa Falls in Eastern Idaho. Near the western side of the Teaton Mountains.
Another image from southeastern Utah. The clouds from the approaching thunder storm created a great backdrop and contrasts for this study in black and white. /

Canyons and arches in Utah and Arizona.
From the film days, 35mm Yashica Electro-X -TL, golden cast assisted with amber filter, one of those creative moments, the Mesa Verde ruins of Southern Colorado are a sight to behold, in five hours we only saw a portion of the dwellings, as well, spent some time at the information center, would like to go back and do a digital shoot, the first experience was memorable, that could be possible come July, where I’ll be on vacation! Oh well here I am off to 6 months ahead of myself, Hope you enjoy the moment! some of these structures have been dated back to 1200 A.D. there is a continued effort to this day to discover many secrets of the Anasazi peoples. this particular structure was called (the square tower house).
This heavily photoshopped image started life as a photo of an abandoned 1961 AMC Ambassador located on old Route 66, near Newkirk, New Mexico. Only 19,000 total Ambassadors were manufactured in 1961, and those numbers are spread across three body styles. Of the 4-door sedans, not many still exist, making this a rare sight. Pentax K20D, f5.6, 1/750. Pentax SMC 20-50 zoom @ 23mm.
This is a partial shot of the entrance to the Rattlesnake Museum in Albuquerque’s “Old Town” central plaza, off old Route 66 (AKA Central Avenue). The plaza was established in 1706, when New Mexico was still a part of “old” Mexico and New Spain. Pentax K20D, 1/100 @ F7.1, ISO 200.
This is a winter scene from the Valles Caldera National Preserve, Jemez Mountains, New Mexico. The Valles Caldera is located on NM Highway 4, AKA, The Jemez Trail . Geographically, the Jemez Mountains are located in northern New Mexico, near Los Alamos . Now to the park. A caldera is a large crater formed by volcanic explosion or by collapse of a volcanic cone. The Valles Caldera National Preserve began life as the 89,000 acre Baca land grant. Land grants have their roots in the earliest colonial days of the 16th and 17th centuries, when large parcels were handed out by the Spanish crown. The Caldera became a National Preserve in 2000. Other than for special events, the Valles Caldera is open only to small groups. By charter, it must become self-sufficient within the next ten years. To that end, much of the land is given over to a massive ranching operation and there are special hunts and fishing claims that are sold by lottery. In winter, it is turned over to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Yerts are scattered across the preserve at intervals, and those who are up to the challenge can rent one for a night or a weekend, and have a sense of total isolation. Over the years, the Caldera has been home to many film projects. Movies filmed here include The Missing , Seraphim Falls, Buffalo Girls and Shootout. Stars who have walked these hills include Gregory Peck, Kenny Rogers, Tom Selleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Anjelica Huston, and Ron Howard. Pentax K20D, 1/200 @ F9, ISO 100, .3 EV compensation. A 3 shot panoramic.

This is a four-shot panorama, cropped to 10×36, featuring a vivid sunset over New Mexico’s Mt. Taylor and the west mesa of Albuquerque, NM. Taken from the Elena Gallegos open space area in the foothills of the Sandia mountains, just below Sandia Peak Tramway. Handheld, Pentax K20D, 1/160 @ F6.3, EV Comp -.7, 133mm, ISO 200. Stitched together in Photoshop CS3. A levels adjustment, otherwise, as is.
The mesas here in north eastern New Mexico are stunning and the summer storms, or any of the storms really, are just spectacular. taken with our Canon Rebel xti better viewed large
The rock wall is part of a structure that stands along the arroyo’s edge in the ghost town of Two Guns, Arizona. The structure seen through the window was a circular, two-story structure with a set of spiraling stone steps. Its fanciful architecture leads me to believe it may have once served as the premier guest cottage at Two Guns, or perhaps as a house of ill repute. Or maybe I’m way off base. I’d love to know the answer. Anyway, Two Guns is located on a remnant of old Route 66. Its story is at once fascinating and tragic and it is definitely worth a few minutes of your time.
A heavy snowfall on the Grand Mesa near Grand Junction turned on a beautiful winter landscape.
Travelers from all over the world are drawn to the prestine magnitude of Arizona’s landscape. From it’s highest peak to the lowest canyon floor the historical nature centered around its creation lures tourist from all walks of life. Red rock monuments tower high above the valleys seemingly reaching out to the heavens. While great crevices, such as the Grand Canyon awe spectators with a suttle show of slithering colors that rapidly change from dawn til dusk. Lush vegetation such as cacti, wild flowers, yucca, juniper, ponderosa pine, velvet mesquite, sage, alpine, sycamore, walnut, acacia, cliff rose, brittlebrush, desert broom and the creosote bush sprout from desert sands, rocky plateaus, mountain tops, valleys, lakesides and canyon floors. Arizona is a destination for all longing to find peace and serenity within a naturally spiritual setting.
Another in my World from Above series. Mountainous landscape shot not from the ground but from a commercial plane flying over Spain at about 11,000m/36,000 ft above sea level. This is a wonderful example of a table top mountain or mesa. I was fascinated by how this massive flat mountain, clearly covered in arable fields, raises up so steeply from the rough and rugged area round about. Witness to the millions of years of development. Nikon D200. Sigma 18-200mm. Tonal correction, etc. in PS. / Location: Somewhere over northern Spain en route from Munich to Tenerife. 27.12.2009 123 views.
