Sedona is a world-renowned town, because of the red rocks. There are substantial art communities there, and many art galleries. Sedona is located in central Arizona, in the United States.
From atop a mesa in the southern portion of Petrified Forest National Park, the grey, blue, and lavender colors of the Chinle Formations rise above the yellows, purples and reds deposited in what was once a fast-flooding system of rivers and streams below. I can see why this is such a popular vista to photograph, but it presents some technical difficulties. There’s framing, and what to include (exclude). Then there’s the challenge of the early morning light and holding all the values together. At the printing stage the ‘scene’ has only about a two stop depth (beyond the arch) so the values require some delicate treatment. My problem was keeping the sun from ‘interfering’ with the scene. I waited until it was about 2/3 the way up the arch before tripping the shutter. Anyway…........ The camera was the Mamiya RZ67 II w/65mm wide angle lens with a No.25 red filter attached. The settings were f22 @ 1 sec using Ilford’s Pan-f Plus film rated at ISO-50 and developed in Gordon Hutching’s PMK 1:2:100 compensating developer.
Taken in 2004 near Grand Junction, Colorado, on a late summer afternoon. The sun was low, casting long shadows on the mesa and casting a dark blue hue on the gathering storm clouds. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image. This is the Guadalupe Mesa on the edge of the Cabezon Wilderness Area, approximately 30 miles off New Mexico highway 550, between San Ysidro and Cuba, NM. Atop this mesa lie the ruins of a Chacoan Outlier community that was established sometime between 800 – 1000 AD. Outlier communities are believed to have been under the sphere of influence of the Chacoan civilization headquartered at Chaco Canyon. According to conventional wisdom, the folks who lived here would have paid crop taxes to the Chacoan aristocracy in Chaco Canyon, and would have traveled to Chaco for important ceremonies and feasts during the equinox and solstice. Guadalupe Mesa is in the Rio Puerco Valley, which is notable for the many volcanic necks located here. In this photo, the darker patch of rock near the crest of the hill is of volcanic origin. Pentax K20D, 1/25 @ F18, ISO 200.

WALPI ~ by Barbara Anne Applegate 12” X 18” Original oil on canvasboard Walpi is One of the most inspiring places in Arizona, Walpi (WAHL-pee) stands surrounded by sky and distant horizons. / Ancient houses of yellow stone appear to grow from the mesa itself. A highlight for many visitors, Walpi dates / from the 13th century and is renowned for its ceremonial dances and crafts. At the top of First Mesa is the village / of Walpi, which was located lower on the slopes of the mesa until the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 brought on fear of / reprisal from the Spanish. The villagers moved Walpi to the very top of the mesa so that they could better defend / themselves in the event of a Spanish attack. Parts of Walpi today still look much like the Ancestral Puebloan villages / of the Arizona canyons. Small stone houses seem to grow directly from the rock of the mesa top, and ladders jut from / the roofs of kivas. The view from here stretches for hundreds of miles around. Walpi, has been continuously inhabited / for more than 1100 years. Walpi stands above the valley at 300 feet. 561 Views FEATURED IN / American Southwest

This road leads to the Chambers Pillar Historical Reserve south of Alice Springs in Central Australia. The mesa in the distance is known as Castle Rock and although not the most notable feature of the reserve it is nevertheless part of the broken down range that occupies the reserve. The reserve is synonymous with the indigenous people and the early white explorers notably John McDouall Stuart. Nearby Chambers Pillar and Castle Rock were a beacon in an otherwise featureless landscape.

This panoramic was not taken at a national park, state park, or even a public attraction. Welcome to Colorado. The wife and I were traveling toward the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Those pictures have not been posted yet. I think the wife spent more time watching to make sure I kept my eyes on the road than she did looking at the views. Every once in a while I would get smacked for looking out the side windows instead of straight in front of the car. This was merely a view out the car window while travelling to the park. It is somewhat near a city called Sapinero. The water in the picture is the Blue Mesa Reservoir. The name of the cliffs are currently unknown to me. The view was free. / / It was absolutely stunning to be standing there and taking this site in. If you want a scale of size, if you look very closely at the water you can spot a single sailboat. (Since posting this picture and looking at it in the public view, the sailboat is nothing more than pixel on the screen. One can’t even spot it without being able to zoom in. Oh well.) Tripod / Nikon D300 / Lens: 18-200mm (VR on – Windy) / ISO: 200 / Aperture: F/5.6 / Focal Length: 65mm ( all 3 pictures of panoramic – manual focus to achieve this) / Shutter Speed: 5 exposure HDR ranging from 1/640s to 1/80s for all 3 pictures that make up this panoramic. / Gitzo 3-way pan/tilt head / Both tripod and 3-way pan/tilt head completely leveled prior to HDR panoramic pictures being taken. / White Balance: Taken in Raw with automatic; but switched to cloudy to knock down some of the blue in the haze. Tools Used: / Photomatix Version 3.2.3 – HDR Processing – Close to natural setting / Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 Suite – 3 picture stitching / Corel’s Paint Shop Pro Ultimate X2 – Brightness, Levels, Curves, and Sharpening / Noise Ninja Version 2.0 – Noise reduction
