Hi Kids! Today saw me painting, painting something which I hope will become rather successful. I’m into the quirky, and the geeky… all the things that make up TBO. / I’ve taken the Dead Silence Mermaid, and have painted, and drawn her (acrylic and marker) onto some floppy disks! / This was really just a bit of investigative art and i’m now doing one with 4 disks, of the mermaid dj again…... the top will be the same two, but different colours. Would really like your feedback! Would you buy something like this, given the chance? I would be looking at getting them framed and mounted, and putting them in my Big Cartel store. Okay, I recently drew up the newest ‘Lighter Side of Dark’ character (as if I needed a new one for Paully to write about!!!) but I am just too beat to think of a decent name. This character is a mermaid, a gothic mermaid, deadish of course, but a mermaid nonetheless. Oh yeah, and she’s nameless. Who has a name for my gothie-mermaid???

I finally understand what Billy Corgan was on about in his Smashing Pumpkin days when he swooned and crooned, ‘today is the greatest day I’ve ever known.’ This is for a few reasons. 1. I woke up this morning to a cloudless blue sky falling in warm golden pieces and patches through my curtains onto my face / 2. I was woken up by an early morning phone call invitation to my favourite place for breakfast from my favourite friend / 3. As of this weekend I am the owner of the entire series of Sex and the City on DVD / 4. I’m also the new owner of a bright purple yoga mat which apparently now gives me ‘cred’ in my body balance class, which incidentally is also happening today. But most of all… apart from these obviously fantastic reasons to be feeling that today is some kind of wonderful, on my way into the kitchen to brew my first vanilla coffee for the day, I checked my computer to see what had been happening around the RedBubble world. And there it was: my first genuine serious writing win. The winners of the ANIFC08 are: Gayla and JC and I thoroughly enjoyed every entry we received for the A Novel Idea Fall Challenge 2008. We spent the last few days reading and discussing each of the submissions and have come to agreement on the top three entries: First Place: The Sea Queen by Holly Ringland I think my squeals woke up my household. The US$100 prize money will seriously be a framed wall-hung reminder over my writing desk. The inclusion of The Sea Queen in ANI’s anthology is genuinely the biggest writing high I think I’ve ever had and will wait with baited breath for it to come out. But what really reeeeeeeeeeally makes this feel so damn good is that my work has been read by the incredibly talented writers of the RedBubble community who have chosen it as the winner of this competition. A big congratulations to Alison Pearce and Nancy Ames as well – links to their stories are here Bradley, JC and Gayla… thank you wholeheartedly for all of the effort and time you put into A Novel Idea. Thank you for reading my work, and thank you for selecting my piece The Sea Queen as the Fall Challenge Winner of 2008. Thank you for making this the greatest day my writing world has ever known.

/ When I was eight years old (1988) I lived in Hollywood, Ca on a Movie Camp. That in itself is a LONG story but to put it simply, my father was producing a movie, an 80’s teenager in trouble sort of movie. I did actually meet a few actors, one that I still remember is Robin Lively, the red head from I believe the third Karate kid. She was really nice, so nice my little brother fell in love with her, at six, he was sure she would be his girlfriend. LOL / She was actually in the movie my father was working on, which never did end up getting produced. Too bad because I’m actually in it!!!! Haha…okay well maybe that is a good thing. Well during production my father also met one of the animators of a soon to be released Disney cartoon you just may have heard of called The Little Mermaid, Glen Keane. I was an aspiring artist at the time and drawing relentlessly. I even carried around my little box of colored pencils and pens with me everywhere drawing pictures and portraits for people on the spot. It was my way of sharing something with people. Well my father told Glen about me, to this day I’m not sure what he said, except that I loved drawing and mermaids. Both very true facts. Perhaps my Dad showed him a few of my drawings, which I’m sure would have warranted a few chuckles, I liked to exaggerate in my creations. if I perceived someone as fast, they might have three to four legs, and I loved to create made up animals. My favorite was an ostrich-lama, which I drew all the time in hopes that I could cause suspect about their existence. Well Glen, was touched for some reason and quickly sketched the above drawing of the character “Ariel” The Little Mermaid, and dedicated it to me, with a verse from the Bible. I remember when my father brought it home for me that night and I saw it for the first time. First of all I was stunned with the fact I was actually getting a present but also I thought it was the most beautiful drawing I had seen…and the fact that it had MY NAME written on it made it the most valuable treasure I owned. I quickly procured the help of my Mother in putting it in a frame. The best frame in the house. I hung it high on my bedroom wall and would just stare in awe at the special drawing that was created just for me. I studied every detail of it. / I remember thinking, Glen gave me that verse…it’s for me. I then immediately rushed to go look it up in a Bible….I was so excited to see what special secret message it said for me… James 1:17….”Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” Ooooh and that was for me. This “Gift” was for me and I really wanted my art to be my gift as well. That drawing as simple as it was, to me was from the biggest celebrity there could be, a REAL artist working for Disney! / It still hangs on my wall in the original frame snagged from my childhood home. It has been sitting above my drafting table looking over me through every portrait and drawing I have created. The gift, the drawing, and the message it holds, influence me to this day. I believe simple words of encouragement at key times in our lives have the biggest impact. There is a lot of power in a kind word or a simple gift even. Especially a gift that can leave a fingerprint on a spirit. It left a finger print on mine. So “Thank You” Glen Keane. ...and to any aspiring artists just remember the same words from James 1:17 and may they bring you encouragement and happiness too. One of my earlier works, and a photograph of it that I have just stumbled upon. / The work was created on a 35×50cm canvas and was produced following a reproduction from masterpiece of Sheila Wolk’s Metamorphosis.
