I was just ‘as usual’ strolling through the streets and this old men started yelling at me but in a very funny way, he clearly needed some attention, I quessed he wanted to know what I was doing, so I showed him my camera and he made a lot of noice so to make him happy I made some shots and I must say ..it made him stop yelling…’what a caracter’.. / I started my latest Summer Journal today…as with all my other visual Journals, it will be a record of events, meals, painting experiments, parties, recipes etc…this is a large journal much like the others, and I am looking forward to filling it up with memories…Pg 1 is all about beer, a drink which is beloved in Canada and drunk here all year long, and it’s the first time I’ve ever painted it… ..summer’s here and the time is ripe as the saying goes…journal page subjects are casual and unstructured…I don’t fuss or fiddle with the paintings too much and I try to complete each in one sitting... Watercolour on Proximage and Prat Journal Page.. “I have a total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the roads safer, / the beer stronger, the food cheaper and the old men and old women warmer in the winter / and happier in the summer.” Brendan Behan
/ This is page 2 of the Summer Journal…as with all my other visual Journals, it will be a record of events, meals, painting experiments, parties, recipes etc…this is a large journal much like the others, and I am looking forward to filling it up with memories…Pg 1 is all about beer, a drink which is beloved in Canada and drunk here all year long, and now page 2 is Egg and Chips still in the baking pan, which can go with beer too… ..summer’s here and the time is ripe as the saying goes…journal page subjects are casual and unstructured…I don’t fuss or fiddle with the paintings too much and I try to complete each in one sitting... / I have been intrigued with Leonard Cohen all my adult life..I own all his music and writings, and in fact studied his work in University... / This is my interpretation of “The Stranger”...a figure, part human, part landscape, faceless, featureless, with light shining right through him as if he were not really there, at one with the trees and the hills…his stance is vaguely menacing, his person anonymous…we know him and yet we don’t at the same time….even thought I knew it by heart, I listened to the song over and over while I painted…as the initial colours became darker and darker, I felt I knew The Stranger, seen him in fact…in reality I have never met anyone remotely like him, but I think many women do know him…..the lyrics tell the whole story and listening to LC brings it to life…only he knows who The Stranger really is. It’s true that all the men you knew were dealers / who said they were through with dealing / Every time you gave them shelter / I know that kind of man / It’s hard to hold the hand of anyone / who is reaching for the sky just to surrender / who is reaching for the sky just to surrender. And then sweeping up the jokers that he left behind / you find he did not leave you very much not even laughter / Like any dealer he was watching for the card / that is so high and wild / he’ll never need to deal another / He was just some Joseph looking for a manger / He was just some Joseph looking for a manger. And then leaning on your window sill / he’ll say one day you caused his will / to weaken with your love and warmth and shelter / And then taking from his wallet / an old schedule of trains, he’ll say / I told you when I came I was a stranger / I told you when I came I was a stranger. But now another stranger seems / to want you to ignore his dreams / as though they were the burden of some other / O you’ve seen that man before / his golden arm dispatching cards / but now it’s rusted from the elbows to the finger / And he wants to trade the game he plays for shelter / Yes he wants to trade the game he knows for shelter. Ah you hate to watch another tired man / lay down his hand / like he was giving up the holy game of poker / And while he talks his dreams to sleep / you notice there’s a highway / that is curling up like smoke above his shoulder / and suddenly you feel a little older You tell him to come in sit down / but something makes you turn around / The door is open you can’t close your shelter / You try the handle of the road / It opens do not be afraid / It’s you my love, you who are the stranger / It’s you my love, you who are the stranger. Well, I’ve been waiting, I was sure / we’d meet between the trains we’re waiting for / I think it’s time to board another / Please understand, I never had a secret chart / to get me to the heart of this / or any other matter / When he talks like this / you don’t know what he’s after / When he speaks like this, / you don’t know what he’s after. Let’s meet tomorrow if you choose / upon the shore, beneath the bridge / that they are building on some endless river / Then he leaves the platform / for the sleeping car that’s warm / You realize, he’s only advertising one more shelter / And it comes to you, he never was a stranger / And you say ok the bridge or someplace later. And then sweeping up the jokers that he left behind … / And leaning on your window sill … / I told you when I came I was a stranger. Leonard Cohen LISTEN TO THE SONG Acrylic on Canvas
With this image I cut out a guitar from a photo of my brother in law jamming on Easter 2007. I cleaned it up, put it through my filter gallery, added the poster edges effect, then I cloned some spots to darken some areas. I also added some shadow on the bottom of the guitar with my basic brushes (photoshop brushes). I then added swirls (photoshop brushes) and erased some parts of it. For the background I added angel wings (photoshop brushes) and put some style to them. I gave them somewhat of an invisible look so whatever color shirt you choose, the wings will be that color. I also added some hearts (photoshop brushes) because we all have that love for music. Underneath the guitar, I added some musical notes (photoshop brushes) to give it that nice touch. Then I said to myself, what the hell, I will add some splatter paint to it to give some extra color and for more of a playful look. For the colors, I altered the colors with my image adjustments. I fixed the contrast, added highlights, and made an auto color adjustment. This is my entry for the music machines challenge
