  • Watermelon , family Cucurbitaceae refers to both fruit and plant of a vine-like herb originally from southern Africa and one of the most common types of melon. This flowering plant produces a special type of fruit known by botanists as a pepo. The watermelon fruit, loosely considered a type of melon, has a smooth exterior rind and a juicy, sweet, usually red or yellow, but sometimes orange, interior flesh. The flesh consists of highly developed placental tissue within the fruit.

  • This digital artwork is a ‘full frame’ version (as opposed to a vignette) created for a WWF FDC envelope design ( 1 of 4) . I decided to paint a ‘panoramic’ background, even though most of it will be vignetted out when used for an FDC envelope design. I thought it was such a dramatic piece of coastline, it would make an attractive larger ‘full frame’ poster and print, alongside the usual ‘vignetted’ and much smaller FDC version which I will post shortly. The background alone took 48 hours to paint and was made up of 6 separate layers: Sky /Clouds/ and four sections of the terrain overlapping eachother. Doing it in layers allowed me more freedom to adjust each one tonally to give the impression of ‘atmospherics’, so the most distant part of the coastline is much ‘cooler’ and slightly blurred, than the more close up part which is ‘warmer’ and sharper.
