Well the turn out was a little disappointing but for the first Sydney meet but the trains, and that it was the first meet we still had a good showing and enjoyed a great day in the city with like minded folk. In attendance was Macro Britti, Bodymechanic, Miloman, Ozcloggie and the every charming MBartworks (that stands for MB Artworks, not Bartworks…incase like me you were confused). Well I decided for the first time to opperate the D200 in Black and White mode only (I shot RAW+Jpeg so I could always get at the colour if I wanted too). I really liked Hien’s photos of the melbourne meet, so decided to try my hand at Black and White, and mix up the ISO to introduce what I hoped was some complimentary noise. So here are my top 20 shots from the day, no PP except resizing for the web. #1 The Rubber Duckie made famous by Ozcloggie (this duck seems to go everywhere. / #2 Macro Britti sitting on the Town Hall Steps / #3 Ozcloggie sizing up his Rubber Duckie on Town Hall Steps / #4 The Gang loose out on the streets (L-R, Marco, Miloman, MBartworks, Bodymechanic hiding behind MBartworks and finally Ozcloggie) / #5 Interesting sculpture / #6 The Park was a great place to relax / #7 This Varigated Plant was begging for it’s own photo. / #8 A Holy Fence / #9 The Walkers (L-R ,Bodymechanic, MBartworks, Marco) #10 Tree Texture / #11 Ever happy to Model, Rubber Duckie poses for Ozcloggie / #12 Marco wishes he bought a sketch pad as the cameras come out over lunch. / #13 MBartworks and Marco review images on Marco’s phone / #14 Bodymechanic caught mid conversation with Miloman / #15 Miloman poses for the camera, hands on chins seemed a popular pose. #16 Ozcloggie enjoying lunch and a social chat. / #17 Duckie again the centre of attention. / / / #18 Duckie being waited on / #19 The Duck is amused at it’s own reflection. / #20 The Gang walk off into the distance… figuratively /

I don’t normally endorse something unless I’ve been there myself; But in this case I will make the exception. / This is for the Adelaide/SA members who are undecided on a great location to MeetUp, yet want somewhere close, relatively inexpensive and perfect for all their needs/wants: It appears one of our newer members to Redbubble and Adelaide/SA works at the Mannum Motel , Mannum Caravan Park and Murraylands Photography Tours! They can reveal themselves if they wish to tell all. But they have given a great idea that would suit everyone, and is fairly priced. This is the program they suggest. On arrival, meet at our conference room when ready / DAY 1 / ... A Night Walk : River / Church / old Buildings / Riverfront (maybe Sunset shots) / Sleep comfortable in Caravan or OnSite Chalet. DAY 2 / ... Early morning River Photography : Ferries / PS Marion / Lagoons / Bird Life / Breakfast/brunch (catered? or BYO?) / or / Xmas Lunch / ... More Photography : Water falls, Railway Bridges, Boulder Outcrops / Evening Dinner (or BBQ at Caravan Park?) / ... Sun Set on the river, and night walk for those keen / ... Day break River Cruise ($30?pp) / Farewell BBQ Brunch/lunch COST (estimate only) / $130/$150pp (twin Share) for 2 nights, cruise, continuous tea and coffee! Conference room available all the time to meet. Also have open-area in front of the new cafe for sunny socialising! / Cafe open really early so those who bring partners who dont want to get woken up early can just get up, get dressed and come in for a coffee! / Apparently Steve Chapple knows this person the place well. Extras: / Deserted Mines and private property access to waterfalls $60/hour for group (3-4hrs) / Big Bend by Night cliffs, Sunnydale shearing shed and homestead, deserted town, 6 hours guided $360

  • Art and Madness

Van Gogh cuts off his ear. Sylvia Plath gasses herself. The link between art and madness gets too deeply explored by some artists. And 80 RedBubblers get into the act in a town outside of Melbourne. They gather for a weekend of art and photography in a disused asylum. WARNING VIDEO CONTAINS ADULT MATERIAL / I could leave it at that. But you know me. So, just a quick thought. I constantly hear (and have heard) of the difference between being practical and useful or not. Having that winning grasp on reality is what is esteemed. And it occurs to me that art dances on the edge of a sort of madness. With art we embellish reality. We go deep behind the pragmatic and we scream that there is more. We declare our humanity lies not in the food we eat and the dollars we earn but in that which cannot be counted and which has no (real) value. Our art stares reality in the eye and offers up a tulip. Tragically some artists push this too far and lose their sanity to art. But out there in the “real” world a greater tragedy unfolds with thousands sacrificing their humanity to a smothering mundanity. You can see the full work produced by the RedBubbler’s at Aradale here. And if you would like help and advice on organising a meetup then please contact support@redbubble.com. Martin (aka PIlgrim)

  • A great turnout of Redbubblers met at Gladesville Mental Hospital this morning for some photo opportunities – this is a little nook in one of the delapidated buildings. Thanks to Philip and Kaz for organising the day. Gladesville Mental Hospital (formerly Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum) operated from c.1838- Surviving records cover c.1822-1985 In 1838 the lunatic asylum was moved from Liverpool to Tarban Creek, Gladesville and the first patients were transferred from Liverpool Asylum and the Female Factory, Parramatta. It accepted patients from Victoria up until 1848 when the Yarra Bend asylum was opened. By the mid 1960s the institution was known simply as Gladesville Hospital. In 1993 premises at Gladesville Hospital and Macquarie Hospital were revoked as hospitals, and were amalgamated to form the Gladesville Macquarie Hospital. HDR image processed in Photomatix from a single jpeg (with 3 exposures 1/3) then finished in CS3. • This star trail was taken at Girraween National Park as part of the camping trip with the Brisbane Meetup group on Flickr. 45 minutes at F5.6, ISO200. Noise reduction not turned on, as it was getting late and I wasn’t sure about shooting Star trails. I do like this composition and the reflection in the water for a first decent attempt at Star Trails

  • Taken Saturday morning at Mannum Caravan Park at the A.S.A. Xmas meetup. All eyes were on the river at sunrise , when a rainbow appeared behind them. You definitely need eyes in the back of your head. Taken as it is with an Olympus digital camera.(other in for repairs). / !

  • On the second weekend of November 2008 a group of Bubblers wandered into the town of Mannum, on the Mighty Murray River. Most of them were South Aussies, with one supagroovy Bubbler from Tassie. We had a total of 20 including the 3 Bubblers who visited from very very early Saturday morning until late that night. The really wonderful and friendly Bubblers who attended were Photoj, Danni, Jim, Elphonline, Beautiful Valley, Suzanne, Patapping, Mtapping, Bombamermaid, Tamarama, Bill, PrincessBren and AndyGii, plus the adoring family members that tagged along out of pure love! Not one to wake easily, I didn’t get up before the birds to take photos of the sun waking up. Most of the others did though (that’s dedication for you). / I’d say thousands (altogether) of photos were taken of various old cottages, leanto’s which looked like Joliffe created them, steam driven paddleboats, local wildlife (and tamelife… Mum Possom, her baby and her friend all seemed to enjoy that banana!!), sunrises, sunsets, water, clouds, people sitting, people standing, people eating, people chatting (about cameras!! Surprise surprise!!) and of course, people taking photos! And loads more things too!! My budding photographer didn’t want to know about the camera until we were packing up. He saw the tripod (that I hardly ever use) and spent ages playing with the various bits on it. He then decided he wanted to actually take some photos, not just play with the tripod!! Good thing I emptied the memory card first, or he wouldn’t have been able to take any! What else? I’ve found that not only do I have to save for a digital SLR, but I have to save for a Christmas in July AND a bubbler holiday on a houseboat!! How awful!! I’ll have to wait until after March or April to decide if I can do them both or not… well after Christmas! I’ve got it all bookmarked in Safari though ;D I didn’t get any painting or drawing done, but I did come home so relaxed that I felt really weird. I had no idea what the strange calm feeling was until I was chatting (bragging) to Belladonna on the phone and she said I sounded so relaxed! So thank you everyone for helping me become relaxed!!!! I hope it lasts longer than just a day ;D Thank you, all of you, for such a wonderful weekend!! / xx / GG

  • This worn out paddle steamer is moored on the Murray River next to the PS Marion at Mannum, South Australia. / The state of this poor old paddlesteamer appears worse when moored near the other houseboats, some made of nothing but glass.

  • Here’s Jane Keats doing what she does best down at a Redbubble meetup in Williamstown. Shooting her from the other side is Larry Davis . It was a lovely afternoon.

  • Taken at the Redbubble Black Rock Meet – 14th Jan 2009. If you would like to purchase any of my art in a larger format, please contact me. Other works by Earthairfire:

  • One of my last photos in the fading light at Half Moon Bay, my first meetup with the local bubble folk.

  • An early shot while the Half Moon Bay meetup group finished munching fish and chips. / Had some fun during processing to keep the sky and foregorund all in check.

UPCOMING: Adelaide Photographers MeetUp About five weeks ago half-a-dozen Adelaide photographers converged on the Adelaide Zoo for a day of networking, social chitchat and LOTs of photography. This time I’m organising a “City-Walk” where we walk, talk and shoot architecture and objects. Here is the area of the city I’d be interesting in walking.. Yes, this is a large area! I happily walk around ALL day, photographing people, architecture and oddities. DID YOU COME TO SEE THE LIST OF ATTENDEES? You can view it here . Moved for easy-viewing. EDIT: 11:29 PM 17/05/2009 Big thanks to everyone who has responded and is interested: The date has been decided: 31st May Here is the plan for the day: Between 11.00am-12.00noon – Meet at Rotunda on Elder Park. / We all know it, surely. Early arrivals can scope out a good place to watch everyone arriving and get their portrait shots! (I’ll be there at 11.00am!) 12noon – 12.45pm / Walk up KW Road to North Terrace, turning right at Parliament House down toward the Casino/Train Station. Quick visit into the atrium to photograph. It is permitted, I’ve done this on Flickr-group meetups. Continue down North Terrace to the Morphett Road Bridge. 12.45pm – 4.00pm / OPTION 1: / We turn right, crossing the bridge, walking all the way to War Memorial Drive. Those that wish to can take the stairs (just beyond the river that takes you) down to the Torrens … and we all meetup just in front of the Tennis Stadium (or thereabouts). We walk and photograph the length of War Memorial Drive, back across the bridge at KW Road, back to the Rotunda. We then walk up KW Street. From here, read from where option #2 is underlined. OPTION 2. / Just before the bridge, we cross over to photograph the historic Church. (You’ll know it when you get there!) We then walk up Morphet Street, turn LEFT into Hindley Street and we walk and photograph interesting sites along the way. There are few interesting locations behind buildings, (particularly those toy-cars stuck to the wall in Rosina Street) that we can detour to see. When we reach KW Street, we cross over to Rundle Mall to go shoot the Brass Pigs and the Silver Balls! At Pultney Street, we turn left; At North Terrace, we turn left (Some may choose to cross the road). / Photographing historic limestone architecture along the way, we head back to the KW Road intersection, taking the pedestrian lights over to Government House. Here I can show you some interesting facts that I discovered a few years back that is not-overly-publicised! / We then cross the road to Parliament House, and walk back to the Rotunda Wait, wait, you want food and drinks: At some point in Hindley Street or Rundle Mall we find a nice coffee shop! Considering all the chatting and stopping that normally occurs with these events, this will surely fill the afternoon. If anyone knows of any events happening in the CBD that are happening the same weekend, tell us about it now so we can jostle it into the timeline. EXTRA (courtesy of Michael Tapping) / Government House and Grounds are open to the Public on Sunday 31st May between 10.00 AM and 4.00PM / We’ll go there from the Rotunda before moving into the CBD. This may take some time! Tag word for event is asacitywalkmay2009

I’m of the firm opinion that no trip to Melbourne can be complete without catching up with a few Redbubblers, so last Friday night Nat, Jo, Troy, Xav, Geoff and myself all decided to crash a group meet up at Miss Libertines. With a fantastic turnout of Melbournite bubblers, it goes without saying that madness and mayhem ensued. Here’s a couple of pic’s to share. As soon as I arrived I made a beeline for my best girl LisaG Some small… ahem… very small amount of vodkas later, I got to cash in my quota of cuddles with the supremely talented Paul Louis Villani. Good thing I got in early, Paul’s hugs are always in demand :) Michael Alesich was smiling from ear to ear, and why shouldn’t he be when he has gathered to himself the gorgeous loverlies PJ Ryan and Holly Ringland? It was wonderful to meet some new friends and it was equally wonderful to renew some bonds with bubblers I have previously met. However, I have to say that the highlight of my night was likely meeting the hugely talented, very funny and wildly exuberant DieselLaws. With my catchcry of the night being “OMG! I met Diesel Laws!” I guess it is no surprise that my favourite photo of the evening is this one of Diesel with Nat wearing her smashing Scott Robinson Redbubble tee. Michael has posted some more (and vastly better than my snapshotty stuff) photo’s from the night over here if you would like to check them out. You may even find a caption competition happening ;) Many thanks to everyone for your hospitality during my stay. Now if you will excuse me, I think I need to crawl into my cave for about a year to recuperate… perhaps I will find my poor voice hiding in there too, I think it disappeared in protest of all my screaming at Miss Libertines ;) Love to all / xxx PS – I do have more photo’s but they are all pretty much vodka focussed. What? I couldn’t help it… I was THIRSTY!! PPS – there is also some half decent pics of the RB crew over here
