  • How To Organise a Meet Up
    by Jo O'Brien

The first time I met people off the internet, it was …

The first time I met people off the internet, it was 20 bubblers at some pub I’d never been to, and I was supposedly the organsier- I was a nervous wreck! Meeting complete and utter strangers off the internet isn’t always easy, even for the most social butterflies, and even if you feel like you know them pretty well from online. So think about how best to comfort people and make them realise that not everyone on the internet is a scary monster… - meet in a public place where there are passers by / - consider a daytime meet / - ensure any activities include people / - invite attendees to bring a friend or partner along for moral support / - be clear about how to identify each other at the meet up point / - have a way for attendees to contact you/someone on the day / - touch base with attendees prior to the day so they know you really do exist and that it will be going ahead. Inviting People / Well I can tell you how not to invite people- with a vague open ended forum post like “anyone in suchandsuchatown want to meet up one weekend?” This results in three pages of umming and arring and trying to work out details. What you need to do is give it some thought and present a cohesive idea along with the message that you are flexible to other people’s ideas. / Here is an example of how I first suggested a group of us drive 3 hours out of melbourne for a night in Lorne. I suggest having the following details in your invitation post: - A date and time to meet / - A specific meet up location (somewhere well known is best) / - A suggested activity for the day/evening / - How you will identify each other / - How you will contact attendees should there be a change of plans / - How attendees should contact you/someone else should they be late etc. / - Advise people on what they should bring- lunch money, camera etc. Once you have written and posted your invitation in all the right places, (such as a relevant group) people will start to respond. Some will jump in with a big YES!, others will express disappointment at living at the other side of the world, others will ask you to change the date, some will ask you to change other details. When negotiating details, remember that more changes, the more confusing it gets. So don’t feel like you need to bend to every person who can’t make a certain date, or whatever. Some people will miss out – they can come to the next one! A few days before Let attendees know that it is in fact going ahead, confirm the details and get yourself orgainsed. If you have promised them red balloons to mark the meet up point- buy them. If you need to wash your picnic rug, do it. Just trust me on this. You will be nervous on the day itself and are more likely to forget things. Some of my suggestions for the day before are: - charge you camera batteries / - print off a list of people who are coming and any mobile numbers you have for them / - double check any reservations you have and confirm numbers / - Charge your mobile phone and ensure you have enough credit to make several calls / - If you are doing the popular red balloon thing, bring string to tie them to something / - Pack a map, even if you know the area well. It makes giving directions to others easier. / - If there is a reservation, make sure attendees know what name it is under Once you are all packed, leave everything you are taking at the front door or in a pile somewhere like that. On the Day This is the bit where people call you to cancel, rock up late, get lost, and never arrive for reasons you will never find out. - Have your mobile phone on Loud. Boy I have learned this the hard way several times over! / - Be the first person to the meetup point / - Decide how long you are prepared to hang around waiting for latecomers / - Watch out for people arriving / - Introduce yourself with a smile and if your real name is different to your username, introduce yourself with both names. / - Introduce people to each other as they arrive Then you all go off and have a bunch of fun!!! The rest takes care of itself, trust me :) Oh yeah, almost forget… the absolute most important bit of all / post all the photos in a journal post on redbubble so we can all see :)

  • Halls Gap is a small town located in the Grampians National Park. Besides being stunning to look at, you have wineries, bushwalking, relaxing with a good book, adventure sports and more right at your finger tips. Being a small town, all the various accommodation is quite close so it doesn’t matter where you choose to stay. Plus there is a great lolly shop there. For those who laugh at the thought of relaxing, a weekend away with other creative people could bring endless opportunities to create, collaborate and be inspired by the amazing scenery. Photographer, painters, models, illustrators, writers… There is something to inspire every creative soul. So, enough of my sales pitch… How about we all go to Halls Gap March 6th – 9th? March is far enough away that you can’t possibly have plans yet, the weather will still be nice and It’s probably someone’s birthday so we can eat cake. In terms of organising it. Probably best we keep it all in one spot Images in this post are used courtesy of lightsmith

  • / Tessalated Coast by Peter Martin Ok, so here’s my suggestion (feel free to ignore it) Last year I went to a wedding in Lorne on the Great Ocean Road and saw how well they accommodated a larger group. Seeing as how there are a few RedBubblers who live over that way who missed out on our Melbourne Meet Ups, I thought it might be nice to go visit. Great Ocean Road Cottages in Lorne is not only wonderfully cheap, (works out to about $50 per head or they have a backpackers on site if your want cheaper) but the people who run it are lovely and very helpful. You can make use of the electric kitchens to self cater or go to the cafes and pubs down the road. The cottages are a 2 minute walk from an IGA or 10 minute walk to the nearest pub. (Yes, they have Red Wine) / Erskine Falls Reborn by Michael Eyssens The accommodation is a series of small cottages with a queen bed downstairs and 2-3 single beds upstairs. I’d suggest that we organise ourselves into small groups of 3-5 and book a cottage for each group as they are put together. The cottages are all close enough together that it does not matter which one you are in however they are holding a few close together for us until I get back to them in a couple of days. Staying in Lorne will put us within a short drive of the otways and several lovely looking great ocean road sites if we want artistic inspiration. The cottages, while designed to sleep 4-5, are suitable to entertain a group of people and say, sprawl out a game of twister or something. I’ve called them to ensure that they have enough room for us on the night of Sat October 27th and all is good. My thinking is that we could head over early Saturday, spend a day doing bush things and a day doing beach things. What do you think? P.S – Sorry Jess for ambushing this idea!! / Lorne Pier,Victoria by Joe Mortelliti

Well the turn out was a little disappointing but for the first Sydney meet but the trains, and that it was the first meet we still had a good showing and enjoyed a great day in the city with like minded folk. In attendance was Macro Britti, Bodymechanic, Miloman, Ozcloggie and the every charming MBartworks (that stands for MB Artworks, not Bartworks…incase like me you were confused). Well I decided for the first time to opperate the D200 in Black and White mode only (I shot RAW+Jpeg so I could always get at the colour if I wanted too). I really liked Hien’s photos of the melbourne meet, so decided to try my hand at Black and White, and mix up the ISO to introduce what I hoped was some complimentary noise. So here are my top 20 shots from the day, no PP except resizing for the web. #1 The Rubber Duckie made famous by Ozcloggie (this duck seems to go everywhere. / #2 Macro Britti sitting on the Town Hall Steps / #3 Ozcloggie sizing up his Rubber Duckie on Town Hall Steps / #4 The Gang loose out on the streets (L-R, Marco, Miloman, MBartworks, Bodymechanic hiding behind MBartworks and finally Ozcloggie) / #5 Interesting sculpture / #6 The Park was a great place to relax / #7 This Varigated Plant was begging for it’s own photo. / #8 A Holy Fence / #9 The Walkers (L-R ,Bodymechanic, MBartworks, Marco) #10 Tree Texture / #11 Ever happy to Model, Rubber Duckie poses for Ozcloggie / #12 Marco wishes he bought a sketch pad as the cameras come out over lunch. / #13 MBartworks and Marco review images on Marco’s phone / #14 Bodymechanic caught mid conversation with Miloman / #15 Miloman poses for the camera, hands on chins seemed a popular pose. #16 Ozcloggie enjoying lunch and a social chat. / #17 Duckie again the centre of attention. / / / #18 Duckie being waited on / #19 The Duck is amused at it’s own reflection. / #20 The Gang walk off into the distance… figuratively /

Well, Brisbane finally took the plunge and we had our first meet where people actually attended!! The lovely Helen (LittleHelen) arrived at my house at 10am Sunday morning to me still in my pyjamas, so naturally I put her to work in my kitchen :p It rained most of the morning and we were a little disheartened as our meet was a picnic in the Brisbane Botanical Gardens! Luckily by the time we’d driven to Brisbane from the Gold Coast the skies were blue and it was hot and sunny! Helen and I put our balloons up and set up our table just as the first Brisbanite arrived! It was a fun, relaxed, enjoyable afternoon and it was wonderful to finally meet some Brisbane artists. Here’s a few pictures from the day! (Jack01 aka Collie also came with her husband Peter and brother Kev but they unfortunately had to leave before I broke my camera out) drec (Derek) says: always Coca Cola GabrielK listening intently to some profound and philosophical conversation no doubt. (and can I just say these photos don’t do him justice! Really beautiful guy! Romanian and something else if I remember correctly lol) Drec (Derek) tries to come to terms with Kathleen’s psychic powers Kathleen does her best “no really i’m sweet and innocent” face That infamous soccer game! GabrielK pretending he doesn’t know i’m taking (another) picture of him Scott Robinson charges his solar panel for the long walk home Food! Kathleen uses all her jedi mind powers to shrink an unsuspecting guy and his park bench Drec (Derek) has farted and is hoping nobody’s noticed Steven Lippis explains to everyone how his birth defect has impacted upon his life. Gabrielk isn’t interested as he’s perving on that blonde chick in the bikini Helen Every pic I took of Helen is blurry because everytime I went to take a pic of her she’d make me laugh! (And when I dropped her home she invited me in for coffee (wink wink nudge nudge :p) Cake Face! Steven Lippis and the birth defect

  • Meet Charlie
    by Julie Langford

Hi all, Meet Charlie. Charlie is my favorite…

Hi all, Meet Charlie. Charlie is my favorite chimpanzee in the whole world. He resides at Monkey World in Dorset now, where he was rescued from the beach photographer trade in Spain at the age of 10. His life before rescue, a brutal and incomprehendable show of cruelty. Being a photographers prop, the many tourists who sat to have photographs taken with him, were probably unaware that he was being force fed valium, and that his compliance was more down to fear than willingness. By the time Charlie was rescued, he had a broken jaw, with all but four of his teeth being knocked out by his owner. He had damaged eyes, which he sustained in a further beating, which now shows as cataracts. He was only half the weight he should have been for a chimpanzee his age. He could also inject his own sedatives due to his forced addiction to valium. His physical wounds have healed well, but his mental stability, will never be truly normal. He took too much abuse. Yet, he is a forgiving soul – learning to trust and love again, he has a special relationship with his human keeprs now at Monkey World, and is loved by his public everywhere. He can still be rather shy, and it has proved almost impossible in the 6 years that I have been visiting him, to get a decent capture of him, but on the other hand, he does put on a great show now and then when his keepers are around [unfortunately, during those times, you cannot get close enough to get the camera on him]. He has some strange habits too :) As a big male, he likes to display in that wonderful chimpanzee fashion – which can only be described as holliganish! There is an army museum across the way from Monkey World, and each day, the army tanks ride up the road that passes his enclosure. Over the years that Charlie has been a resident here – he has taken a huge exception to these invaders on his patch. When they come, he puffs himself up and charges around like a madman – hooting and barking at the enemy. Truly remarkable isn’t it, that he has managed to hold onto some of his natural behaviour, considering his past life. I will be visiting Charlie very soon, as soon as the weather breaks a little. I dearly want to see him, and I need to renew my adoption for him. I will maybe be lucky enough to get that photo op I have been waiting for this time :) But if not, no matter. I just wanted to introduce him to you all – because he is one special fella. Jul

Quotes in my little red book this weekend included: Books shouldn’t bitchslap you – Adrian Carmody / Speaking of ferrets…. – me / It’s personality vomit – Luckyvegetable / Ah, the classic paddlepop seduction move – Chris White / I’d smash someone in this place for a sausage roll – Yasemin Sumner / He yelled at me so I picked up my box and I ran – Jo O’Brien / There will be cheese – me Please note: during the festivities described, none of us were yet aware of the extent of the bushfire disaster, so I hope no-one is offended by the lack of sombre attitude in this journal post. I don’t think there’s any Melburnian who hasn’t been affected or anyone who isn’t deeply distressed by this hellish week. Please don’t forget to visit The Phoenix Appeal to donate money or artwork to assist the victims. The February Melbourne writers’ meeting heralded the arrival of two interstate bubblers – the wondrous LittleHelen and the fabulous Holly Ringland. In honour of both these beautiful scribes, a celebration was held beforehand at bubble favourite Bar Nancy, where the honey martinis flowed and the food was sublime….black tiger prawns in pomegranate sauce followed by chocolate fondue that had more than a few fingers dipping. The guests of honour, Helen & Holly / Holly & I / The Red Bubble models preparing for a Mark German shoot / Luckyvegetable & Michael Alesich slow dancing….oh, so romantic :-) / Helen & I, and yet another honey martini…or three / The stunning Mizz Holly herself / Two days later we met at the Wesley Anne pub for cider and stories at the writers’ meeting, and the numbers swelled to the biggest session yet – twenty scribes sitting in the beer garden, reading out stories, ducking from cameras, and to quote Yasemin Sumner, being total word nerds. With Holly / Jo O’Brien, Paul Compton, Yasemin Sumner, Sheamus D & Fleece, all listening to a story / Shall you read, or will I? / Eventually the meeting rolled into Madame Brussels, where the rooftop garden provided a gorgeous city sunset for the interstate bubblers…Melbourne at its finest. Holly & Yasemin / Lucky pretending her cute little cupcake wasn’t PINK. / Moving on to everyone’s favourite part of the night…massage time (Lucky & Jess) / Sheamus D & Yaseminka / Sangria & sunshine with bubble wenches / And so we put our lovely wenches back on planes and out of Melbourne…...Helen, whose kickarse spirit and gentle humour are balm for the soul, and pretty damn good for the funny bone too. And babe, you absolutely CAN do cute, believe me! Can’t wait to strut through New York with you in June. And my girl of the Holly, who had the key to my house and all the cherry beer she could handle, who counted cats with me and reminded me of why I write, just when I needed it most. Love you two wonderful women, more than I can say. And some quotes to finish off the weekend…... / Pomegranate is the new black – Lucky / I like to be suckled – Adrian / God bless the selkies – me / I didn’t think you could be naked in a Tudor village – Lucky / Stay out of my orb – Jess / When men do that to me….my god….I’d almost tell them my real name! – me I said almost.

Good morning beautiful bubblers! / A special meet up has been planned in Melbourne for Sunday 26th April, 2009. / / Where – The Astor Theatre in St. Kilda (Click here for location) / Time – 10:00am till 12:00pm (2hrs) / / Unfortunately we are limited in time and there is also a cost for the hire of the venue so… / Participation numbers will be limited to 30. / That will enable the cost to be only $22 each. / ...and if you are great at mathematics you will find that it does cost $660 to hire the venue for two hours with the theatre lights on. / / There will be a plan put into action on the day as the theatre section of the building would be too crowded with 30 artists / models climbing over each other for space so, we will be dividing time in the Theatre itself into two groups of 15 and one hour of “creative” time for each group. / / IMPORTANT / If you wish to bring one muse / model that is cool but… if you’re thinking of bringing 2 or more they should also be paying the $22 so they can be added to the official numbers… / I’m just trying to avoid having 30 paid up photographers with 90 models running around… The Astor Theatre will get very small very quickly. / So, just try to do the right thing and get multiple models to pay $22, that way we keep numbers at a manageable level and everyone has enough creative space to work in. / / Please Bubblemail me with your interest and I’ll pass on payment information. / The final 30 participants will be listed here / I look forward to seeing you all!! :D ____________ / / Have you ever wanted to be an extra on a film set??? / Well this rare and fun opportunity exists in Melbourne on Monday evening, 23rd March. / Where? Grumpy’s – 125 Smith St in Fitzroy. A start time of 4:30pm this will give the crew some “make-up” time so shooting will start around 6pm. / Also please log onto Facebook and become Emily’s friend! Check it out! :D / To find out even more about this event please view this Forum Post and if you want more info about the company doing the filming click here / / / ____________ / / ...and just in case that wasn’t enough for you, one Melbourne’s most talented photographers Joshua Hakman is putting together an evening meet up just click here for more info! / / / Peace peeps! /

A meet of people, just over a week ago started in the Northcote abode to all writers known as the Wesley Anne. With numbers in the twenties it continued on into the evening until it collided in the city with a bar called Madame Brussels. Punch, cigarettes and light food abound, the night rolled over to start the work week again.

/ It wouldn’t be a Melbourne Meet Up without the standard Toyota shot / Michael and Jess are crazy… / We decide to have some lunch between all the red wine / Jo took care of John’s baby but wasn’t allowed to breastfeed at the table / ...Oh yeah, Jo and Jess are also crazy / Jo is deep in though about something. Let’s not ask what, it’s probably “where’d that kid get a spiderman top from?” / Alateia’s hat was useful for our own personal busker / Wen finally got a hat (he’s wanted one for ages but he couldn’t find one that fitted) / Us girls went for a skip / Don’t mess with John Robb- he’s our resident sports photography expert and even showed us how to perve on members of the public at the Eureka Tower observation deck with his massive massive lens / Kisses from Alateia all around (notice she is reapplying for round two in the background) / Then Alateia went after all the boys cheeks with her red red lips / Awwwwwwwwwwwwww / Jo takes a bite out of Jess.. there must have been a reason / We started feeling really bad that Mel didn’t make it again so I’ve photoshopped her into an image / Allen’s just so cool :) / Adrian is invited to be a member of our secret society of people who drink lots of red wine and take photos… he has to check with his girlfriend first though / With a lens that big, John Robb is sure to have a disclaimer Get your Melbourne Christmas Drinks here
