  • This one is another digital oil painting. / It started as a photo of me and a baby deer that was having a bad day. Our Chihuahua named Gumby was outside barking like crazy early one morning, so I rushed outside expecting to find a snake about to eat him up! / Nope--this crazy little dog was running around a tiny fawn that I guess he had chased till it was confused and afraid. Old Gumby thought he was an Alpha Wolf (about a foot tall) and he had “taken down” his prey—he had a serious swagger and attitude problem going on after that! HAHAHA! I gently took the baby deer and cared for it till the wildlife people could come and rescue it. This photo was taken of me holding this very fawn. Then it happened--imagination! I saw that this could be an interesting twist on Rudolph and Santa. I had to change my huge Irish nose to a more rounded Santa nose—hope you like it. / LotsaLuv, / Dale

  • Another image from my Ladybird meeting place near Mt Burr, Limestone Coast, South Australia. Many of you who have visited before would have seen a range of images from this secret little place where these ladybirds congregated in their thousands. Recently I reported they had all been killed by poison spray laid by Local Government. I have been back and they are just starting to regenerate now with only small bunches in their tens surviving but they seem to be making a slow comeback. This image, shot with a Canon 400D – sigma 100 – 300 macro, is an old image I have been wanting to post for some time. Hopefully we will see them back in their glory like this in years to come.

I’m pretty certain I have one of the greatest jobs in the universe. Working remotely from home for Redbubble means that I don’t have to deal with traffic, if my children are ill and need to stay home from school it’s no biggie, and I can wear my Elmo pj’s all day and no one will even batt an eyelid. Except my dog. But I have a large stash of schmacko’s to keep her from blabbing to the neighbours ;) For all that though, I find myself isolated. The personalities of my work colleagues are reduced to words on a screen, and an occaisional crackly voice over some shonky internet phone chat setup. So when I find myself invited over to Melbourne to spend some real time at RB HQ, I always grab the opportunity in both hands and run with it as fast as my short little Elmo clad legs will carry me! I mean let’s face it… no matter how hard we try to infuse our personalities down into our modems, what comes out on the other side is only going to be a shadow of our true selves. Being able to see someones face animated with life as they speak, being able to read their body language as you make them laugh… that is something we really can only do face to face. And it is these interactions that round us out and fulfill our sense of connection to other members of the human race. For example… Over the internet I could not have seen how much Geoff’s face lights up when he let’s rip with his infectious laugh. I would never have realised that Xav, Troy and Russ are the Larry, Curly and Moe of Redbubble. In my wildest dreams I couldn’t have guessed that Nat and Jo are soul sisters of the Cousin It variety. Nor would I have been able to witness the effect a massive amount of caffiene has on Russ. And I most certainly would never, ever, have imagined that Xav owned a pair of shoes. Let alone that he would actually wear them! Spending some quality real world time with my colleagues has given a much greater depth to our interactions with each other over the internet, and this is something that I have also witnessed at the many Redbubble meet-ups I have attended. These meets are so much more important than just “putting a face to a name”. Meeting fellow creatives from Redbubble provides a deeper sense of connection that simply can’t be conveyed through the written word alone. If you have never had the opportunity to attend a Redbubble meet, go hunt one down in your area or even better yet, why not organise one yourself? Your life will certainly be the richer for it. Rhana P.S. For those who are wondering at the title of this journal well… Shrek was pretty big in our house ;) And friendships are like onions. Many different layers.

  • / / Original pencil drawing on Aquarelle Arches paper 56×76cm / Drawing 15 hours/painting 12 hours = 27 hours total A digitally painted hand drawn artwork… the inspiration for this is “Meeting Places”... As a child one of the most frequent things we did together as a family was to attend church on Sundays, I went to a Catholic School and the church I remember best was St Agnes’ at Port Macquarie… the nuns would come over for morning tea sometimes, and the priests would come for dinner occasionally…they were the days of fun parish picnics and life that wasn’t so hurried..when we took time to socialise, meeting and enjoying one another’s company. Mum was/is a great cook and host…and although this picture isn’t authentic as a portrait of her and myself…it’s representative. It’s also representative of new life and hope for the future, as the mother figure is with child….. and the child herself nurtures the wildlife…perhaps she is taking them to church for a blessing… perhaps the joey has lost his mother and needs nursing til he can fend for himself. The kookaburra is all seeing and all knowing….. the wise overseer of the bush… in this case, he stands in as the owl figure.
