/ Heart of Gold is a mixed media production on watercolour paper / and one of my most recent paintings The painting itself was inspired by a response to Sylvia, the character in Bryce Courtney’s novel who led the Children’s Crusades during medieval times. In my painting, Sylvia is on a quest, just as I am, always searching for a heart of gold. She has the key to unlocking goodness and kindness and truth hanging from her belt, and she carries a staff with a beautiful flower and wears a crown, symbolising that she is both shepherdess and a leader of her people. Her horse also wears a heart around his neck. They rely on one another for support and encouragement during difficult times.

An acrylic on canvas. Portrait of a Medieval Girl, losely based on Mary Boleyn. 40×40 cm. (16” x 16”) I had already experimented with this image using Corel Painter, so thought it was about time I tried to paint it. Some of the stages, in case anyone is interested: /

This bread I break was once the oat, / This wine upon a foreign tree / Plunged in its fruit; / Man in the day or wind at night / Laid the crops low, broke the grape’s joy. / Dylan Thomas (1914-1953)

The Vigilant When no land was secure, this stone-made giants assured that the next day wouldn’t be made of captivity and suffering. Strategically placed, these strongholds were the ones who held a country’s name and honour during times of war. Fortunately we are in times of peace, and it’s amazing to step on the luxurious grass, and hear the wind while gazing such gorgeous castle. I can hear the church’s bells far away, a child laughter near, and the sound of the sheeps right in front of me. Yet… the sense of respect is omnipresent, and the scent of bravery still lives here… This is Castelo do Lindoso in the north of Portugal, on Serra do Gerês. José Ramos

Thanks for viewing. Few people there are who have not turned to prayer at some point in their lives. Many find hope and answers; others become bitter. The lighting on this was very complex. Hope you enjoy it. Rob

I went to the Medieval Fair at Gumeracha today & met no less than four fellow bubblers! Peter Ryan AKA Furious Ennui & the lovely Sadandal, who were kind enough to let me come into the arena during Peter’s battle to take some photographs : ) The armour that Peter is wearing weighs no less than 34kg! While at the festival I also bumped into another couple of bubblers, Pat Tapping and her husband. The bubble is getting bigger : )

We read about certain people in medieval times who went about with crystal staffs that could give light at a moment’s notice. / Obviously they have stumbled on scientific knowledge not available to the masses. They kept that knowledge to themselves to achieve the status of wise men. / The wizard’s staff is perhaps an example of the earliest battery-operated torch in history. / / Fractal rendered in Apophysis

A little slice of the history of Edinburgh, the Governor’s House on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. / Looking quite medieval, this is actually an early 19th century structure, the remains of the old Calton Gaol, a prison that was once on the historic hill. / Atmospheric evening fog and illumination came together to make this something special. Available as cards and a variety of prints – if interested in cards, on the preview page, please try with “black backing” as the artist intends.
