/ On 30 Jan.,06, their Royal Highnesses, the Prince of Orange and Princess Maxima of the Netherlands, in the company of his aunt, Princess Margriet of the Netherlands and her husband, Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven, as well as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, His Excellency Dr Jan Peter Balkenende (Unkindly known as ‘Harry Potter’, by many Dutch people, at the time,) as well as the Minister for Foreign Affairs, of Australia, the Honourable Alexander Downer MP, had the pleasure of seeing photos of me, on page 14, of the Official Programme, for the Royal Gala Dinner, to mark the 400th Anniversary of of the arrival of Dutch people, on the shores of Australia. / At the time, I had arrived only 50 years earlier, on the shores of Australia. / / Yes. That’s me, on my Dads moped, in Gouda; and later, on my bike, in Matraville; on Bondi Beach, with a redhead; and beside my first VW. / / Unfortunately, the first photo, used at the bottom of page 14, was trimmed and does not show my parents and I, waving farewell to our relatives as we walked up the gangway to the migrant ship, the Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. / / The little photo in the middle, shows us, boarding the little bus, with all our relatives, to go to Amsterdam, where I said a final goodbye to my best friend, Piet (pronounced Pete) and best girlfriend, Ria (pronounced Reeyah). / Earlier, I had taken leave of the kids in my street, / / / as well as at school (6th class). / It was all smiles, – still – when we waved goodbye, from the deck, as well. / The the ship started to move and the relatives got back on the bus and raced the J.v.O., to the Port of IJmuiden. To wave to us, one more time, as the ship entered the lock and the water was raised, level with that of the North Sea. / / Another lot of waving and then the two women (my mother and Mrs van Hoorn. We migrated, together with her, her husband, and her young daughter, 6) / noticed that my best friend put his arm up, to hide his face and the tears and that did it. / Now there were also two women crying and later my mother would often say it was then when she realised: “What have we done? These two boys may never see each other again.” / (We did, 13 years later.) / After the Gulf of Biscaye, the stomach settled down reasonably well and visiting Port Said and going through the Suez Canal was interesting. In the Indian Ocean the ship heaved too much, along with my stomach and the ritual of going down to the dining room was not pleasant. / Speaking of food, via the internet, I noticed that quite a few Dutch people were not impressed by how much was on the menu, for the royal couple and other attendees of the gala dinner. Their reaction was: All that food, when others, in the country may have so very little. / / But Prime Ministers Howard and Balkenende were impressed! / / I hope they liked the look of the program booklet as well as some of the other items there, representing the 400 year relations. / The booklet was produced by an Australian, working in The Hague, Ben Zane, with whom, we discovered, I had this link: His father had been just as frequently on Maroubra Beach, as I had been. His father was a member of the Surf Life Saving Club, though. I only used to just read books on the beach and listen to John Laws and Bob Rogers presenting the latest pop-tunes, via the radio and the beach p.a. system, or sometimes, meet up with fellow-Maroubra Bay High School students. / / Unlike those Dutch explorers, 400 years ago, we stayed in Australia. First being taken to Bonegilla Migrant Camp and then via Scheyville -, Villawood – and Matraville Hostels, before settling with the other family, in an old house. / While in Matraville Hostel, we were sent on a holiday to a former migrant hostel, in Nelson Bay. From there I wrote an _Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh _ – letter. But that’s another story. :) /

  • My surreal experience at the St George Kangaroo Meatworks

In the early 60’s I hitched a ride from Brisbane to St George (Google Maps ref: 28° 2’23.43”S, 148°35’12.40”E) to start my new job at the St George Kangaroo Meatworks. I was to meet my boss at a motel in St George then start at the meatworks the next day, but he asked me to help clear out a Company cool-store in the town. i think this was a test because I had to help unload roo carcasses from a cool store with a cooling system that had broken down a few weeks before! The roos were rotting and crawling with maggots, surprisingly, after about half an hour the stench didn’t seem to matter and we managed to clean the store out in a couple of hours then back to the motel for a shower, meal and sleep. The next day I was driven to the meatworks which was about 10kms out of town, I was told to see the foreman who would tell me what my job was. The foreman asked if I had ever been a meat inspector! because my work was to be the Meat Inspector and that Bob, who was leaving, would show me how to be a meat inspector. I went over to where Bob was working and asked what the meat Inspector did he replied that a meat inspector looked out for worms and if he finds worms he must put that meat on the Sydney pile and the meat without worms went on the Germany Export pile. When I asked Bob what a worm looked like he said he didn’t know because he had only been a meat Inspector for two days and was sick of it, but he did say it was OK to just divide the meat into 2 more or less equal piles! Ten minutes later when I became the new meat Inspector. I soon discovered a worm, they were long, pale coloured tape worms which were common in the gut of kangaroos then, they seemed pretty obvious to me, I guess Bob wasn’t very observant or just didn’t care. Water at the meat works was pumped from a bore and was only plentiful on Wednesdays so every Wednesday the place was hosed down and we all had a shower, washing during the rest of the week was kept to the absolute minimum. My home at the Kangaroo meat works was an old army tent behind the main boning shed, amongst piles of bones and millions of crows which made sure I was awake when work started at sunrise. There was a worker in the tent next to mine who refused to work unless he had shot a crow through a hole in his tent roof before he emerged from in his sleeping bag! Another larger tent contained a family of 3 kids one who was aged about 12 worked in the meat works as one of three boners, he couldn’t read or write, the boss had to sign his pay slip on pay-days. This kid’s father was one of the roo shooters who supplied the company, he would spend weeks in the bush and stored his “kills” in cool stores around the district ready for collection by the company. Friday night was pub night and we would all pile onto the back of a truck (including the 14 year old boner) and travel into St George to the pub where fights were between soldiers (must have been a army camp near by), ringers and other “Wild West” type characters who all wore riding boots and cowboy hats. the 14 year old boner stayed in the car park but occasionally a middy of beer was taken out to him. I lasted about 4 weeks at the St George Kangaroo Meat works as one of their longest serving meat inspectors before I decided to move on to Roma via Surrat where I was almost arrested for vagrancy… but that’s another story.

Pretty stoked. I found an artist that wants to collaborate with me for a possible one-time graphic novel based on Meat, Friend and then if that goes well, we’ll be setting up a series to try and have published at a later date. The art will be more along the horror/macabre Vasquez style for the most part, to give you an idea of what she’s capable of. Also I’m trying to get her involved with redbubble because her paintings (which are really 3D sculptures on canvas) are bad freaking ass. Anyway, if she gets up and running on here, I’ll be sure to let everyone know ^^ Thanks for tuning in and you’ll hear from me here and there! Tata! / Fadere

Although i’m not usually too much of a fan of “blowing my own trumpet”, sometimes I think we have to do a bit of self congratulatory back slapping! / Over the last month, I have been part of a Welsh open studios event, by the name of Helfa Gelf, run in collaboration with the Welsh Assembly government and the Cambrian Academy of Art, among others. / I have also been selected as a contributing exhibitor at a local Gallery and Artists co-operative- Gallery 36. / Add to this, my new status as official photographer to a fantastic Burlesque performer and teacher Miss Scarlet Fever and being signed up as a freelance snapper for Majestic Model Agency and all in all-it’s been a fairly successful few weeks!!!!!!!! Now for the Oscar winners “thank you” speech. Since joining Redbubble, making friends with a fantastic worldwide community of supportive Artists, writers, photographers and all round good guys, I have grown both as a person and as an Artist, in my own right. Self confidence and self belief have grown and thanks to the continued support of my “network of buddies”, I now firmly believe that I really can do this, I really can actually make a living as a photographer and I really can live the life I was put on this earth to live. Thank you all, so much-my successes are as much a result of what you guys have done for me, as for what I have done for myself. Roy.

Claims that Sweeney Todd was a real person are strongly disputed by scholars, although there are possible legendary prototypes, arguably making the story of Sweeney Todd an example of an urban legend. In the original version of the tale he is a barber who murders wealthy customers by pulling a lever while they are in his barber chair which, unknown to them, is fixed to a revolving trap-door, making them fall backward into the basement, generally causing them to break their necks or skulls as they hit the ground. Just in case they are alive, he goes to the basement and “polishes them off”, meaning he slits their throats with a cut-throat razor. After Todd has robbed his dead victims of their goods, Mrs. Lovett, his partner in crime (in some later versions, his friend who wants to become his lover), assists him in disposing of the bodies by having their flesh baked into meat pies, and selling them to the unsuspecting customers of her pie shop. Todd’s barber shop is situated at 186 Fleet Street, London, next to St. Dunstan’s church, and is connected to Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop in nearby Bell Yard by means of an underground passage.
