The Robber Fly is one of my favorite macro subjects. They have so much character. Very interesting to study as well. They actually catch their prey in mid air. This particular robber was only about 3/4 inch long. His meal was exceptionally small. I didn’t know he had until I looked through the lens.

In one of the wards a table stands at the end, set up almost as if someone was about to sit down to a meal before they left. This asylum was open from 1882 and closed finally in 1991, after a slow and gradual wind down. It was the third of three asylums in the area and was only ever built to be overflow for the other two, so its gradual close just meant the patients from here could be transferred back to the other two now that there were fewer numbers due to care in the community etc.
OK, I admit, I’ve gone a little fox crazy lately. I filled an 8gb card again today with at least 4 different foxes. This one just finished a meal and is not pleased that another fox is trying to move in on her leftovers. Wheat Ridge, Colorado

There is deeply philosophical conundrum embedded in this work / “Which came first the chicken or the fried egg ?” / The answer this.. “the spaghetti” ! I’ve got Irish and Italian blood so Celtic Spaghetti was the almost inevitable outcome ! I think this would look good as a big print.. so I hope one of the people who have bought this will put a PIC in the buyers booth ! Please !!!

Took this shot of a juvenile Pacific Gull (Larus pacificus) at Red Bluff last week on a family holiday at Lake Tyers. Another shot that demonstrates the liberating power of my new 5DmkII as this sort of pic was difficult and expensive (on motor drive) for me to take with my old landscape optimized Velvia50 film set up. Camera: Canon EOS 5D mkII / Lens: EF 100-300 f/4.5-5.6 USM @ 300mm / Filter: UV / ISO: 200? / Shutter Speed: 1/250thsec / Aperture: f/13 / WB: Auto / Post production: jpeg, straightened, cropped and levels in Microsoft Office Picture Manager (yuk, I’ll redo it properly next week from the RAW in PS) Check out my Birds gallery for more avian delights. / This is page 2 of the Summer Journal…as with all my other visual Journals, it will be a record of events, meals, painting experiments, parties, recipes etc…this is a large journal much like the others, and I am looking forward to filling it up with memories…Pg 1 is all about beer, a drink which is beloved in Canada and drunk here all year long, and now page 2 is Egg and Chips still in the baking pan, which can go with beer too… ..summer’s here and the time is ripe as the saying goes…journal page subjects are casual and unstructured…I don’t fuss or fiddle with the paintings too much and I try to complete each in one sitting...
