Tufa is a build up of calcium that forms around underwater springs over long periods of time. They are now exposed because the water level at Mono Lake is low. What you are seeing is actually exposed lakebed that was underwater 100 years ago. How did it get so low? Because Los Angeles pumps its water from the streams that feed this lake. Then they send the water through an aquaduct for hundreds of miles until it gets to LA. They can steal all of this water because long ago they bought all the land from under the ranchers here for its water rights. Seems wrong to me that a city can buy up all this land so far away from its city boundaries and that they can essentially put the area into a never-ending drought. This is an HDR composed of 5 exposures taken 1 stop apart.

Sunrise At Upper Beaver Meadows It pays to get places early, you all shoulda seen the out of state photographers come screaming around the corner in their 2 cars, slamming on the brakes, parking, and trying to lug what seemed like 200 pounds of equipment stuffed into massive LowePro bags when I was shooting this lol Anyways, this was quite a scene and one that I was pretty thrilled about capturing, the clouds just seem to skyrocket by me. Photographed in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park. / Thoughts welcomed! / —-John You can see more of my work on my website at jdebordphoto.com
I took this photograph on Christmas day while vacationing in Nipika Eco-Resort in British Columbia. The lighting was perfect along with the low cloud. It had snowed lightly in the morning so the snow was nice and fresh. The low cloud formation gives the photo a nice dramatic look. © 2009 Anne Hale. / /
The Little Lakes Valley Trail is must see if you are in the Sierra Nevada region. It is a great trail because a lot can be seen without much elevation gain, but if you want there are always those hard to get to lakes in the valley that provide a challenge. Unfortunately, because of its beauty it is also one of the busiest trails around so you have to time it right. This photo was taken a few miles into the trail at a bridge crossing Ruby Creek which drains into Heart Lake in the background. In the springtime this area is covered in wildflowers. This was taken near the end of summer. This is an HDR created using Photomatix Pro.

In the past few weeks I was lacking any motivation to go out with my camera and come back with some decent shots. The worst thing was that I didn’t even have an idea what to photograph… On Wednesday I went for a 51km cycling round through the miountains surrounding Innsbruck, and guess what – I came back with one or two ideas for new photos. So yesterday I drove up to the Axamer Lizum, a well know skiing area in winter, but quite forgotten about in summer. so here’s the result, a six shots panorama of the mountain scenery of the Axamer Lizum. the mountains in the pano are (left to right): / Saile (Nockspitze) > Schneiderspitze > Ampferstein > Marchreisenspitze Canon EOS 40D / Sigma 10-20 EX DC HSM / Hoya ND8 filter / tripod
This large oil painting is one of my persoanl favorites. The oak tree is magestic and massive and grows deep into the ground while reaching for the heavens. Each one appears to have it’s own personality especially the older ones.
