  • Pyramid of Kukulkan in Chichen Itza (Mexico).

  • In Chichen Itza stands a centuries old Mayan Temple, in its full magnificence and splendor, in the Yucatan jungle. A most impressive sight.

  • Carved wooden beasty from Mexico with wonderful Mayan teeny tiny jade mosaic.

  • Termite trails can be seen down the limestone rock from their ‘nest’ to the jungle floor. Rigo had to chop his way past this branch before we could get through properly. Sometimes he had to hack a way through when a tree had fallen completely across a route. These paths are cleared about twice a year for horse trails to Mayan ruins and caves – or waterfalls ! As he slashed I was waiting for his horse’s head to roll!! he was so near it at times.

  • We drove in to Guatemala, to Tikal, where the Mayan civilisation had 130 000 Mayans in this one area. Known just now is that the civilisation lived from around 700BC to about 650 AD. This is one of the 6 temples and many houses that are round the Grand Plaza. It is 47 m in height and has nine layers, which makes it stand out amongst the rest, but it is not the tallest at the Plaza as one temple is 70 m. The body of the leader Jasaw Chan K’awiil was found inside in a tomb. No one knows how or why the Mayans disappeared but there are many theories. The jaguar is the noted animal for Belize and Guatemala.

  • After a 3 hr ride in the jungle we came to this limestone Mayan cave. This is one of the riding group repelling into this cave. I will upload another of inside this cave which was a dry cave – Two days before we canoed about half a mile into another cave with our headlamps attached !! very eerie . This cave had swallows and bats in the entrance and a few relics from the Mayan past. It had a most unusual floor of stone, shaped like waves of the sea for one section then damp earth from the dripping stalactites on another section. Picture it very dark!!

  • In the middle of the Mayan ruins of Chichenitza, scattered along the paths and walkways are many artisans displaying their works. this man was carving away at the jaguar head, showcasing finished projects nearby.

  • This is a deep underground limestone cave used by the Mayans during the period from approx 650BC to 600AD)- There were thousand of artefacts in it – only uncovered 4 years ago when the owner of the land found spaces round a rock and moved the rock away – We had to descend a ladder he’d made, through a narrow entrance and walk through each cavern , going downhill most of the way. Each area was all set out with the artefacts he had tried to piece together from that section. In the fourth cavern he discovered two bodies – one of a man lying flat on the ground with his arms crossed but he unfortunately touched him and a lot turned to dust. The body of a woman was in pieces about three feet away. He collected all the bones/ jaws ,complete with teeth etc. The two skulls you see are kind of square. Archaeologista have found out that the Mayans bound the heads of their children to produce this shape!! The Mayans also apparently broke their utensils when they left the cave but this one has 4 completely untouched huge jars in various sections of the cave,. there were also spear heads, jade, shells, pots, dishes jewellery, rolling shaped stones for grinding corn – an utterly unbelievable find.

  • The beautiful and time weathered architecture of Mayan ruins is reflected in modern designs incorporating some of the smae principles. This building in Cancun, Mexico.

  • A beautiful sunrise made even better with a pelican flying by.

  • This symbol is a Mayan glyph and is known as Imix meaning waterlily or sometimes seen as crocodile and is the 1st day of the Mayan Calendar. I hope to do a series of these and release them on T-shirts. Hand drawn in graphite and then Artline, coloured in digitally with paint bucket to give a blocked stamp look in the authentic Maya style.
