This chair is inside the part of the Mawson’s hut segregated for the use of Mawson alone. Mawson led an expedition to Antartica and overwintered in this very basic hut with other expeditioners. The hut remains in Commonwealth Bay, Antartica as the expeditioners left it and as the harsh climate of Anarctica has allowed. The chair is the only chair that remains in the hut and perhaps it was the only chair that was ever there, the others using their bunks as a place to sit during the day. The conditions that existed in that cramped, cold and probably perpetual gloom (no daylight for four months during winter) must have been hard.
