Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You Or as a rough translation either: I wasn’t paying attention properly, or, I saw you but didn’t care…

Swans apparently mate for life. Alaska has much marshland. Trumpeter swans annually visit a marsh area near us in the fall, where I shot this last September. Nikon D70 / Nikkor VR 70-300mm / 300mm / f/5.6 / 1/500s / -1EV / ISO 200 / Manual Exposure Mode / cropped

My Great-Grandfather Holly Vandyck served in France in World War I…he was also an exceptional artist. Recently my father entrusted me with his sketchbook to try and preserve the artworks as the book itself is starting to fall apart. All the images in the book were drawn during the war…some even depicting the actual battles. I have scanned all the images and am trying to think of the best way to present them. It seems that he had a sense of humour too, many of his images poke fun at war. A sense of humour would be essential I guess under such extreme circumstances. All the sketches are ink and watercolour on a heavy linen paper bound together in a cloth book. Best viewed large There is no retouching done apart from adding the border and drop shadow. I am loathe to put these up on the web as it would be devastating if they were stolen…but they are so incredible that I want to share them with you. PLEASE respect that these hold a special importance to my family. (c) Van Dyck Family 2009
My husband Tommy spotted an owl in a tree as we were riding along the Lake Martin road so naturally we stopped to watch and take pictures. Moments later, a second owl lit on the branch and proceeded to tenderly “kiss” the first one’s face over and over again. They even kissed on the “lips” or rather beaks and then they both flew away. It was such a sweet encounter, one I was delighted to witness, and a great opportunity for me as I had never been able to photograph owls before this day. I think these may be barred owls; please correct me if I’m wrong. Thank you for taking a look at this photo and if you have time, please view larger.

I was thrilled to capture these two beautiful / creatures and I love their facial features. / Click on photo to view larger. (Canon D40) Dragonflies and damselflies (odonata), / like cockroaches, are one of the oldest / types of insects. The only thing that has / changed about them are their size. In / prehistoric times, odonata were as big / as hawks. They had wingspans of about / thirty inches and were the largest insects / to ever live. Their fossils have been / discovered in Kansas, Siberia, and many / other parts of the world. Dragonflies and / damselflies are often very colorful and are / carnivorous – they hunt and eat meat. / Adults feed on mosquitoes, they eat / butterflies and some will even take spiders / from their webs! Their life-cycle can be / from a few months to even a several years. / They can fly up to speeds of 25-30 miles / per hour. They are considered aquatic / insects because they live near fresh water / and their larvae (young form) actually live / in water. They live near rivers, lakes, / streams, ponds, and even marshes and / swamps. Adults need sunshine and / warmth for their daily activity. Many / species must therefore warm themselves / before they fly. They neither sting nor / bite and are completely harmless to / humans. Adults have well-developed / eyes and hunt mostly by sight and are / extremely agile fliers. Adult males / generally hang out near water to be / seen by females, who mostly stay / away from water until they are ready / to mate and lay eggs. In mating, the / male and female form a ‘wheel’ position. / The male gets in front and clasps the / head of the female with the claspers / at the end of his abdomen; the female / is behind and bends her abdomen / downward to the secondary genitalia / of the male where she will receive his / sperm. Dragonflies can mate while / perched but can also mate while in flight. / The male is often present while the / female lays her eggs so that other / male competition will not disturb her. This female Eastern bluebird is feeling the effects of the unusually oppressive heat in southern Louisiana during one of the hottest Junes on record. She is industrious and ever vigilant over her nestlings, though, and makes innumerable trips to and from the nest box, hunting for spiders and bugs for her hungry babies and delivering the goods fresh from the fields. She took a little break in the action during the mid morning hours and rested from her labors, looking straight at me to make sure I wouldn’t advance any closer than her normal comfort zone. The Eastern bluebird female has a dusky blue back, a light orangey breast, large expressive eyes, and a long black bill. Not as vibrant as her mate, she amazes me because she seems much bolder than he is. She approaches the nesting box when I’m close by, but he doesn’t dare. These birds have been nesting in my yard for many years now, and it’s a joy to watch their activity especially during the mating season when they are more visible. They are very fond of water and love a good splash in the bird bath. They do not eat from my birdseed feeders, preferring live insects and berries as their main fare. Their scientific name is Sialia Sialis. The bluebirds usually have three clutches per mating season. The pair inhabiting my boxes this year successfully fledged five babies; the second nesting met with disaster when a house sparrow raided the box and killed all the babies; this is their third nesting. Only two of the eggs were productive. With just a pair of nestlings in the box, it’s a bit easier for mom and dad to care for them. The poor little parents are beginning to look ragged, though. The incessant demands are taking a toll on them, especially in this horrible heat. I keep the birdbaths filled with fresh water and they frequent the little pools daily.
Following damselflies and dragonflies, happened upon a mating pair (voyeur) who gifted my lens and eyes with a heart ♥ Hearts of Fire
