  • ... a couple of cute little Adelie penguins move in for a closer look.

  • A mature Little Blue Heron twist his head as if he is waiting for a reply from someone. Since he’s dressed to kill in full plumage, it’s no guess he’s in the mating mood…LOL

  • This 11” x 17” acrylic painting demonstrates that man’s best friend can also be his best boating buddy.

  • Two flickers, male and female, exchange vows during mating season in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Photo taken March 2008.

  • I watched a major battle today between a male Eastern bluebird and a dominant male sparrow. This beautiful young male was fighting gallantly for his turf, but I don’t know what the outcome will be. Sparrows have superior bills and don’t give up easily. It’s a shame they rival bluebirds for nesting boxes as they don’t have to have this kind of nest; they can pretty much survive anywhere. The bluebirds had already constructed the nest, but the female had not yet laid her eggs. That’s a good thing as I’ve seen sparrows enter a nest and destroy the eggs. Let’s hope for a good outcome!

  • If birds could talk, I think this bluebird would tell me, “You don’t say!” in utter incredulity at the message I just imparted! Isn’t it fun to put words in the mouths of our feathered friends. Bet they’re shaking their heads and saying, “Those poor humans; they just don’t get it, do they?” This Eastern bluebird has such expressiveness in his face he’s bound to have some decidedly strong opinions bottled up inside his pretty little head.

  • In the early spring the male red-winged black bird takes his perch high in the brush and calls out to attract female black birds to his harem. Most often there are more than one male close by attempting to do the same thing.

  • Every year around November hundreds of Green Sea Turtles conjugate along the coastline of Ningaloo Reef to mate and lay their eggs. These ones are getting a little carried away here. / Location: Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia Framing suggestion: / © aabz-imaging / ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

  • Peacocks are large, colorful pheasants (typically blue and green) known for their iridescent tails. These tail feathers, or coverts, spread out in a distinctive train that is more than 60 percent of the bird’s total body length and boast colorful “eye” markings of blue, gold, red, and other hues. The large train is used in mating rituals and courtship displays. It can be arched into a magnificent fan that reaches across the bird’s back and touches the ground on either side. Females are believed to choose their mates according to the size, color, and quality of these outrageous feather trains. Peafowl are omnivorous and eat plant parts, flower petals, seed heads, insects and other arthropods, reptiles, and amphibians.

  • My Father had a great love for his cats and over his long lifetime there were many. I remember once when I was designing a window treatment as a house-warming gift for my folks, he and my step-mom carefully thought it over and chose the fabric that was the very same blue that was the exact shade as their beloved cat’s eyes. All of his life he had this special bond with his cats and with all animals. I guess the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.. “To some people, homeless cats are of little value. But to those who are not quite so blind, they are not only precious lives, but also very special beings, blessed with the ability to touch our imagination and lead us into a world of true magic and wonder.” ~ Michael Mountain, President , Best Friends Animal Society A special dedication to Leena and Minny on Friday, 12/12/2008. • I was taking photos of bridal wreathe boughs when I noticed a little red spot in the fork of one of the bare branches. On closer inspection, I discovered two little red spots, a pair of ladybugs in their bridal chamber!

  • Bodies Entwined / / / Bodies entwined and spirits meet / Souls collide as they spin in the air / Caresses exchanged like silk on skin / Honeyed kisses soft and so sweet / Come from their passion within / Intricate patterns form around them / As the fires of desire burn brightly / Partners in this life and the next one / Knowing exactly the shape of their love / Hearts are given for eternity and beyond / Homes found in the others eyes so deep / Wishes and fantasies wrought from dreams / As they dance across the heavens expanse / Soul-mates in life and loving each other / Secure in wings curled around them. • This female bluebird is a great hunter; I’m amazed at how quickly she and her mate find and catch insects and then speed back to the supper table where the hatchlings eagerly await their return. She took a good look at me before she popped into the nest to dole out the goods to the noisily peeping chicks.

  • I have been photographing this pair of mated bald eagles for a long time. Mostly, I capture them seated in trees, or if I am lucky, taking off or landing. Today, I was really lucky, as I witnessed and photographed the male bringing a salmon to the female as she sat on the edge of the Campbell River. Captured with a Nikon D700 and Nikkor 600 mm lens with 1:4 teleconverter, ISO 640, -0.33 EV, f10, 1/1000s.
