15×22 watercolor on cold press Arches paper. Original available. The English Mastiff, often called simply Mastiff, is a large breed of dog of the general mastiff or Molosser type. AppearanceThis breed is powerfully built, with a massive body, broad skull and head of generally square appearance. It is also the biggest dog breed. Mastiffs have a tendency to over-salivate and “drool” frequently. Their size is very large and gives an impression of power and strength when viewed from any angle. The body is massive with great depth and breadth, especially between the forelegs, causing these to be set wide apart. While no height or weight is specified for this breed, the approximate height is 27 inches to 34 inches (70 to 80 cm) and weight is (175 to 230 lb). The short coat is close-lying and the color is apricot-fawn, silver-fawn, fawn, or dark fawn-brindle, always with black on the muzzle, ears, and nose and around the eyes. Guinness Book of World Records recognizes a mastiff from England named Zorba as the heaviest dog in the world, at over 315lb (142.8 kg).[1] Zorba stood 37 inches (94 cm) at the shoulder and was 8 feet 3 inches (251 cm) from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Zorba set this record in November 1989, when he was 8 years old, and about the size of a small donkey. (there are claims of heavier St. Bernards). / Temperament / The Mastiff breed is a combination of grandeur, dignity, and courage; calm and affectionate to its master, but capable of protection. This particular mastiff-type breed is an extremely capable guard. If an unfamiliar person approaches near their perceived territory or its master, the Mastiff will immediately position themselves between its master and the stranger. If the approaching person does not back down, they take immediate defensive action. It is because of this instinctive behavior that English Mastiffs have earned themselves a spot in the world’s top 10 guard dogs. The breed is innately good natured, calm, easygoing, and surprisingly gentle. It is a well-mannered house pet but needs sufficient room for exercise and activity. This is an extremely loyal breed, though not excessively demonstrative. It is exceptionally devoted to its family and good with children. / Health / Mastiff puppies require a carefully watched diet due to their very rapid growth. This is a particularly large dog demanding correct diet and exercise. The expected lifespan is 9 to 11 years. Major issues include hip dysplasia and gastric torsion. Minor problems include obesity, osteosarcoma, and cystinuria. Problems only occasionally found include cardiomyopathy, allergies, vaginal hyperplasia, cruciate ligament rupture, hypothyroidism, OCD, entropion, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and persistent pupillary membranes (PPM). When purchasing a purebred Mastiff, experts often suggest that the dog undergo tests for hips, elbow, eyes, thyroid, and DNA for PRA. (information from Wikipedia) Completed 2004

His name is a bit inappropriate really : his first owners took him from the street where he had been abandoned and whist with them chased a cat (sadly encouraged to do so) and ended up under a car. He went into the forest into hiding and led to a ‘search party’ to find him. Sadly his owner had to return to the UK and despite trying to rehome him were unable to do so. Fortunately (for Lucky) we were moving (with our four cats) to a detatched home and we adopted him. / He has scars on his body and legs, broken teeth and a perpetual ‘life does me no favours’ type of look. He chases cats, runs from pups, tolerates life and barks and snaps at anything that buzzes (he has constant bites and stings as a result). / He is a man of routine, has no social decorum and produces abundant amountsof pet nectar. He constantly needs a bath and hates water: even refuses to toilet or go for a walk if there is a hint of rain. / Given choice he would stay in ‘bed’ 24/7 – probably read a cheap tabloid newspaper – headlines, page 3 and sport. / In addition to the above he is a Heinx 47. Obviously boxer, a hint of mastiff and a suggestion of Rhodesian Ridgeback. LUCKY / A mixed-breed dog, also called a mutt, mongrel, tyke, cur, bitzer, feist or random-bred dog, is a dog that has characteristics of two or more types of breeds, or is a descendant of feral or pariah dog populations. The term “mixed-breed” is a misnomer, as it does not indicate the offspring of dogs of known or pure breeding. This term (along with the term purebred dog) stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of genetics and misinterpretation of Darwinian theory. In contrast to mixed-breed, the term crossbreed refers to puppies produced by the intentional breeding of dogs of two different known purebred dog breeds. The term “mutt” or mixed-breed generally refers to a dog of unknown descent. Dogs interbreed freely, except where extreme variations in size exist, so mixed-breed dogs vary in size, shape, and color, making them hard to classify physically.
Cane Corso (CC) :: Where Size, Power, Balance and Movement merge into the Ideal! / These dogs are classic Mastiffs without the loose skin of other related Mastiff breeds and were once used as cattle drivers. The Corso is a working breed and due to its history of boar hunting, guardian of people and farms, and butcher’s dog, they are required to function under high levels of stress. They are bred for strength, agility, temperament, endurance and, above all, companionship. Cane Corsos originating from the country of origin (Italy) tend to possess a more outgoing, stable temperament than their American counterpart. Cane Corsos are extremely loyal to their family and very aloof with strangers. They are a large breed of dog and take up lots of space on the couch, in the house and in the car. They drool and prefer to wipe their faces on their owners pants. Corsos like to sit close to their family and will sit on your feet, lean against you, often lay their heavy head in your lap. They like to follow you where ever you go and be a part of whatever you do. A cute, eight-week-old Corso puppy will soon turn into a large, dominant dog. That’s why it is very important that Corso get an early basic obedience education and live in a household that uses positive reinforcement and reward based training. Allow it to play, but never to jump! Trust me, you don’t want a 100++ pound mass of muscles jumping on you! Time, Commitment and Patience have their Rewards! Corsos long to be with people and require a couple hours a day of attention and exercise. Such noble dogs deserve nothing less! Puppy Time Sets of Two / / /
Here are Pixie, the black Cane Corso, and Tucker, the Beagle. The size difference may prevented other dogs from becoming friends; however, these two are playful pals. The dogs chase each other around, or Pixie (the Cane Corso) lies on the ground and lets Tucker (the Beagle) pretend to be dominant as the little dog jumps on her and chews her ears. They eat together and, when they sleep, Tucker lies against the big black dog to stay warm. The two dogs apparently draw comfort from each other. The bond that dogs can establish with other dogs and species is often dramatic and poignant. This is consistent with the idea that, although dogs are happiest when they are in a social situation, the species that they are interacting with is less important than the quality of the interactions. Cody was a Mastiff and Rottweiler. He was an impressive presence on the porch, but he thought of himself as a lap dog. He was sweet to all people and all critters.
Primo and me in my office posing..and then right before the shutter went off..he took an interest of my dance bag on my office desk…. oh, well, we tried.. original, to crop only. Nikon D40x
The biggest dog I’ve ever known—also he had the best disposition with other living things. He sheltered barn cats, kids, and puppies. From us big people, he just wanted a pat on the head and a kind word. His tail never quit wagging. RIP Cody
