Early morning sunrises in marinas will often yield neat water reflections. The cloud and contrails made a complex sky. I set the camera on the deck for the three exposures used for the HDR image.

Very fitting tribute to all Firemen everywhere I thought, but especially here in Liverpool where they suffered more than most in the blitz of the second world war. To me the structure remembers the historic and valiant past of the fireboat’s and their crews without dewling on it, sited in this part of Liverpool with the regeneration going on all around it, again seem fitting to me, as if it is saying Life will go on no matter what.

Companion image to City Sunrise I’ve always been attracted to the hinterland of reality.. that place between between abstraction and reality where the diving line is blurred. In this case any sense of reality is a construct.. its is realistic in the sense that aerials and masts etc are recognisable urban features but in another sense they are nothing more than scratches and scribbles that approximate to the actual objects. There is no actual place where this vista exists… although I have often seen bits of this pictures. This is the visual landscape I enjoy operating in.. recognisable to an extent but also almost entirely imagined. Its a place but not a place.. it has forms but not real forms… but the truth is you can say exactly the same of every work of art. Some people think that aiming at realism is somehow truer to the subject but every photographer knows that even the most realistic depictions can be altered and made super realistic or less realistic. This is one of a series of pictures based on the City Sunrise pastel sketch. Click here for the next picture in the series / / “Here”
