OK, lets get really weird. Maris spouse of RedBubble’s co-founder, Paul was on “Deal or No Deal” on Australian television tonight. One has to ask what on earth she was doing there rather than on RedBubble. But … and a big but it is … she won $30,000. I mean 30 thousand dollars! She said she was going to spend it on a holiday to Las Vegas but she really should be spending it all on art here at RedBubble. Send her a pleading bubblemail.

A photograph is usually looked at – seldom looked into. ~Ansel Adams I think a photography class should be a requirement in all educational programs because it makes you see the world rather than just look at it. ~Author Unknown I think the best pictures are often on the edges of any situation, I don’t find photographing the situation nearly as interesting as photographing the edges. ~William Albert Allard, “The Photographic Essay” I hate cameras. They are so much more sure than I am about everything. ~John Steinbeck Actually, I’m not all that interested in the subject of photography. Once the picture is in the box, I’m not all that interested in what happens next. Hunters, after all, aren’t cooks. ~Henri Cartier-Bresson A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense, and is, thereby, a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety. ~Ansel Adams I just think it’s important to be direct and honest with people about why you’re photographing them and what you’re doing. After all, you are taking some of their soul. ~Mary Ellen Mark Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man. ~Edward Steichen / Edward Steichen – The Flatiron (1905)

I’m supposed to be painting and being creative but I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon and have a go at this myself. ...... here we go! 1. Do you like blue cheese? / Hell No!! Don’t get me wrong… I love cheese, but that blue stuff is just… just…. pure evil! Ewwwwwww! 2. Have you ever smoked a cigarette? / No. 3. Do you own a gun? / No, but I do sometimes wish I did. I can think of so many ‘good’ uses for owning a gun… unfortunately all of them mean I would end up in prison! OO” 4. What flavor do you add to your drink at Sonic? / I thought Sonic was a blue hedgehog?!..... Flavours… ummmmmm, probably lime or lemon. 5. Although I normally don’t have a drink in the morning. I’ve got that much stuff to do lately, it’s early afternoon before I have anything to eat or drink. I just roll out of bed and get straight to work. 9. Can you do push-ups? / Erm, no. I could probably manage half a one! :) 10. What’s your favorite meal? / Anything hot and spicy. Chicken curry, beef curry, prawn curry, Thai curry, beef chilli… the hotter the better! 11. What’s your favorite piece of jewelry? / I’m not really a big fan of jewellery but I do have a beautiful Art Nouveau style necklace that my friend bought me for my 21st. 12. Favorite hobby? / I have so many it’s hard to choose just one…. painting, drawing, going for long walks, playing my bass guitar. 13. Do you work with people who idolize you? / Now there’s something I find hard to believe… 14. Name a trait that you hate about yourself? / My Jekyll and Hyde temper. X( I’m placid and kind hearted 95% of the time but if you manage to get me annoyed I’d run for cover if I were you! Unleash the inner beast Grrrrrr! 16. Middle name? / Well I really don’t think I need to answer that… 17. Name 3 thoughts at this moment: / I really need to be painting instead of answering these questions. / Why can’t there be 34 hours in a day instead of 24? / ...and I really need to get something to eat before I collapse. 18. Name 3 things you bought yesterday: / Bubble wrap, a roll of brown paper and a gingerbread man… yummy! 19. Name 3 drinks you regularly drink. / Fruit juice, tea and milk 20. Current worry right now? / My hair! I seem to be going grey at an alarming rate… and I’m not even 30 yet! 21. Current hate right now? / Hate is rather a strong word… I prefer to use the word irritant and I’d be here ages listing them all! Here’s a few… arrogance, people who stand and talk in the middle of the supermarket aisle, queue jumpers…. oh I could go on forever! 22. Favorite place to be? / Home sweet home. I like nothing better than spending the day expressing myself at the easel. 23. How did you bring in New Years? / At home with the family watching the New Year’s Celebrations on the TV. 24. Favorite place to go? / Anywhere there’s lots of wildlife and no people. 25. What is your most recurring dream? / The one where an invisible force is trying to strangle me o_O… 26. Introvert or extrovert? / Definitely introvert…. unless I’ve had a drink! =D 27. What color shirt are you wearing? / Black 28. Do you like sleeping on satin sheets? / Dunno. Would love to give it a try though =D 29. Can you whistle? / Yup! 30. Favorite color(s)? / Black, purple and blue…...Hmmmm….. very reminiscent of a bruise me thinks! 31. Would you be a pirate? / Shiver me timbers. You’d be walking the plank… arg! If I got to meet Johnny Depp, yes. Otherwise, no. I get terrible sea sickness! o_o 32. What songs do you sing in the shower? / I don’t tend sing in the shower. I think the neighbours would complain if I did….. =D 33. Favorite girl’s name? / Dunno… never really thought about it. 34. Favorite boy’s name? / Same as above. 35. What’s in your pocket right now? / Nothing, but normally I have tissues. 36. Last thing that made you laugh? / Reading frozenfa’s 50 things. 37. Bed sheets as a child? / The only ones I can remember had She-Ra on them! 38. Worst injury you’ve ever had? / I fractured my finger playing netball when I was at school… that was a bit sore! I also almost cut the end of my finger off with a scalpel while I was cutting some card… that bled for ages. The worst has to be the one I did the other day… It’s not really an injury more me being an idiot! I rubbed my eye after I had chopped some African Bird’s Eye Chillis!!! On the Scoville Scale these things are at 100,000-200,000 (jalapeno peppers are only at around 8,000) and believe me, that has got to be the most intense and worst pain I have ever felt!!! 39. Do you love where you live? / It’s OK I suppose, could be better. 40. How many TV’s are in your house? / 3. I hardly have time to watch any of them though! 41. Saint children’s story published. A new children’s story entitled Mary the Masked Booby has recently been published. The story is about the return of the Masked Booby birds to the main island of Ascension. It is written by Tara Pelembe and the photographs are by Anselmo Pelembe. “We are very aware that there are few children’s stories about St. Helena and Ascension” said Tara “and we wanted to use real situations and images from Ascension wildlife for children on St. Helena and Ascension to be able to read about wildlife and learn conservation concepts that are within their immediate environment” While working in the Ascension Conservation Department, Tara and Anselmo developed this idea. Anselmo used his wildlife photography to create the images that form the visual basis of the story. “Ascension and St. Helena are incredibly unique environments” said Anselmo. “My idea is that the images I have taken during my time on the islands need to be shared in many forms. The images in this story book are all undoctored, and, for example, we camped at the bottom of Letterbox on Ascension to get the front cover photo.” Mary the Masked Booby tells the story of a pair of adventurous young birds, Mary and her friend Tom, who want to set up home on a new land. They are brave enough to try and are successful. They are then followed by their friends. The concept of the story is based on the real life, internationally renowned seabird restoration project that has been ongoing on Ascension since 2001. The book has had positive comment from its informal distribution in the UK and has been enjoyed by all children who have had the opportunity of reading it. Anselmo Pelembe

I really enjoy seing other peoples step-by-step how a painting has come to life so I thought I’d post one of my own ;-) this painting has taken me a looong time to finish, mostly because I am so busy trying to finish my PhD on time ;-) As it really was a step-by-step process (normally I finish a painting much quicker) I decided to take photos after each session. I started out with very thin paint to outline my idea. First I thought there would be masses of red feathers coming out of her carnivale-costume hat, which later changed to just being a wrapped-shawl-kind-of thing. / The next session I added a thin wash of blue for shadows, and after that some more details and a high-collared robe. After that i decided a dark background would work better, and this was also when I discarded the feather idea. / after this I kept adding layers of red (from my new tube of wonderful cadmium red!) and playing around with thin layers of colour to the face. This is my first attempt at real skin colour, (as opposed to the orange or blue I normally use ;-)) and I am quite happy with the result. I still need to work on skin colour shading but I think I will leave this painting for now so I don’t ovework it, she just have to be more painterly than realistic which I actually like. As i was taking the final photo the other day, the sun was playing tricks with my camera, and one of the photos came out really dark in the lower right corner, like below. I think this artifact looks great, and I might just go back to the painting and darken it a bit more.

Fredonia has a Christmas pagent. It was started during the 1930s. If anyone in town knows the original author of the script, they’ve never said. Thankfully! It was the most kitchy dialogue ever written. It’s put on by the school system. Illegal? For many years, yes. After about 50 years of this, it was taken on by the ACLU. A loophole was found, and now it rocks on legally. My father, a lawyer, and I used to argue with my mother, a conservative Christian, about it’s legalities years before anything was done about it. Understand, I cherish my memories of the pagent. Southeastern Kansas was settled by Scotch Irish pioneers from towns in New York and Pennsylvania. It was pure “Little House on the Prarie.” The remains of one of Laura Ingles’ childhood homes is about 50 miles away. The town names are Fredonia, Altoona, Erie, New Albany with the occational nod to Indian names like Neodesha thrown in. It’s overwhemingly waspy with a scattering of Catholics and Mennonites. I was raised in the Christian Church, but to really count socially, you had to be a Methodist. Forget minorities. The town had two black families. Back to the pagent. Every spare minute during the month of December was spent practicing the music. Every kid in the school system, except for a few with very independent parents took part. Grades 1-3 had their own section of the high school gym bleachers. On pagent night, they stood to sing “Away in A Manger.” This was major entertainment for those of us in the high school band. Having a pagent at the start of flu season is risky at best. The band members ran bets on which little kid would throw up from the excitement or the flu first. Sammy Gillette usually got the honors. Then we’d try to predict how many would follow Sammy’s lead. The teachers spent most of the evening running up and down the stairs trying to get kids out of the gym before the worst happened. One teacher finally started bringing paper bags. Grades 4-6 marched in singing “O Come All Ye Faithful.” They got to wear white choir robes with black bows at the necks. Two sixth grade boys led this procession carrying candles. This was a job I always coveted, but as a girl was disqualified. The pagent was closed by the same group leaving singing “Joy to the World.” Most of the really plum pagent parts did go to the girls. There was speculation every year about who would get the part of the Virign Mary and the Angel Gabriel. The yearly joke was that they would have to cancel the pagent because they couldn’t find anyone to play the Virgin Mary. There was also a host of little angels picked for the final pagent scene. If Gabriel was blonde the little angels were blonde. If Gabriel had dark hair so did the little angels. Every year I prayed that Gabriel would be a blonde to up my chances of getting picked. My grandmother, the junior high Home Ec teacher, was in charge of the angels. This did nothing to increase my chances of getting picked. I did finally make it in 8th grade. The angels were dressed in white robes with huge heavy crepe paper covered wings. They had wire halos that were wrapped with tinsel. I thought it was the most glamorous costume ever invented! The big pagent finale was all of the angels hauled up on to a tiered wooden riser with Gabriel at the top. It was painted to look like clouds. All of the gym lights were turned off and the stage was lit with blue lights. A high school chorus hidden behing the curtains sang “Silent Night.” There was one great role for the guys. King Harrod! A better part for over acting was never written. The requirements for Harrod were a deep voice and the ability to wave a sword and yell “No little babe of Bethlahem will ever grow to be a man!” After 12 years of practice, everyone who attended the Fredonia schools had the whole pagent memorized. When my sister and I get together, it’s obligatory after a few glasses of wine for us to start reciting Mary’s or the inn keeper’s daughter’s lines. Mary’s went, “Father, as to thee I cry to thee who dwell’s above the sky. Keep me from the stain of sin and let thy spirit dwell within. Hark! A glorious light from heaven I see. A holy angel comes to me.” The inn keeper’s daughter’s lines went, “Father, I had such a strange dream. I dreamed a king came to our inn and we had no room for him.” We usually start reciting the lines in restaurants with our husbands, imports from out of town, looking like they want to flee the room. It’s a bond only those raised in Fredonia can share.

I dunno. I had such an exciting year, so many good things to appreciate. Now the weather is sun shiny, warm and I can wear shorts. Or any other thing that is not much. I can sleep half naked. I am on holidays and don’t have the ’’potential’/ threat’ of being woken up to come in to work and face large groups of unknown hostile teenagers. So. Let’s get happy. I am a pretty happy person, and sometimes I don’t realize it! I’m fairly positive most of the time and can find solutions to most things, which I see as obvious, but hadn’t occurred to others, yet. I’m satisfied by the variety of means I earn my living from. How many people can say they are a this/slash that slash the other as well? I have a long list of things I do, have done, can do. I love the space I have to be creative…and to be on my own sometimes. I really enjoy ‘people’ time, but at this time of year, now I’ve caught up with my friends, and family, I am enjoying doing not much at all. It feels like a revelation. A secret that I’ve never admitted. Hilarious. I hear other people talk about it all the time! It changes from moment to moment. Can I tell you, though, now the BF’s mate is here, and they are out shopping for the third day of continuous shopping, I am so glad I have the house to myself. I have music on, playing what I want to hear, at the volume, wearing what I want to wear, not having to impress anybody. And not hearing, most importantly, swearing, cursing, damning, talk of blowing things up, or the sound of the xbox. My 36 yo BF has just bought the 360 version, and as wonderful it is to him, and his mates, I am so glad he kindly listened to me, from the edge of reason, to get earphones to go with them. I know I’ll be ok now! When we have kids, god help me if it’s not accidently broken. Permanently. Do you think anyone will mind if I go to bed early on New Year’s Eve? Will anyone care if I don’t stay up to watch fireworks. Anyhow. The year that was. If I’m going to bed early-let’s have some good memories to sleep on. Summarize. hm. Now I have tutoring set up, I feel pretty confident. There was a shaky moment mid year, where a student I felt should’ve been moved the term earlier was still with me, and his spelling was not improved…(that is a hellish moment for a teacher-you want them to improve…and if they don’t, not for lack of effort!) but the rest were all going great guns and everyone was happy. I have an awesome ‘wall of fame’ of all the students, photoshopped and glamourized. I’ve seen each student light up, seeing themselves up there. They sit there and wonder if they know them, which school do they go to and when do I have them? Anything to get out of w_erk_. But mostly, it’s fun. I have student’s who get excited about coming to maths. It’s true! (I’m feeling very happy, just thinking about it!) We play snakes n ladders (who would of thought), memory (with timestables) and pretend we are rich, adding up our fortunes (you are designer/own a horse/ artist) and paying fabulous bills (premiere in Hollywood/ horse trainers etc / paint) and make sure we come out even. We talk about a-cute angles, obese angles, I mean, obtuse…I don’t know why they teach them baby language of ‘sharp’ and blunt’ angles. Why? Learn the proper names first off. Parents say they look forward to coming to tutoring, and I get presents. How much do I love my job! Very much, actually. It’s a shame I have to catch a bus, walk, train, bus to get there-it’s not really worth the effort, pay wise, but I love going, so I’ve kept it up. See! See! lots of good things. (feeling better-I use my time wisely!) And because it’s in the afternoon, I can paint, and draw, and go for walks, and wax and move the furniture around, and feed this RB hunger. At the beginning I bought a screen printing kit, to finally, finally make those t-shirts I’d been meaning to. then RB came along-they are so much better than this hands on business! And believe me, many a happy hour, not even thinking about what I ‘should’ be doing, crossed it. I’m there! In the right place. Because that my friend, is the secret. Now, you’ve read this far. Is there more? Of course there’s more. There’s always more, always better. How much do you need to know? recap. Quickly. the BF and I (he who does not like to be named) took four months of looking, pondering, deliberating, but we found a place. We moved in. We’re satisfied. Yes, we argued, and still argued. Loudly. Nigglingly. We’ve learnt, we’re learning, and are good. I want more cleaning. I want more…? We have plenty of nights out. Plenty of nights in. We grow closer in our own company. We have friends over. No one has quite grasped talking louder, even me, and sometimes even I don’t realise how much M is missing, until he asks me to repeat myself frequently. But then he changes the batteries (to his hearing aid) and it seems to help. Funny how it’s only sometimes he misses things…there still is selective hearing. erm, oh yeah, and I got him to ask me to marry him. He graciously asked me on my birthday. Cloud nine all day and then some. I’m still pretty happy about it. Happier each day. Love him more, as much and more each day. He helps me with delivering art. For TWO exhibitions. I feel really professional now. I sold ten from the first show, and now three at Gallery 26. I did a paid photo shoot for a family-when I have done it for free too many times! I’ve sold t-shirts and cards. and have loads of beautiful photos and paintings in my collection. I feel like a real artist now. I’ve been featured on RB front page a few times, in the Mosman Daily and MX (oh funny, the girl at the bank, who I always talk to, got all mushy about how she’d seen me in it, and didn’t realise I was an artist! celebrity!) I have a website (finally!) thanks to webgrrl! Next on the list-the MCA. I just went in today-inspired, I’m back at home, painting away, and making it real. Cool. Cool bananas. At the end of the day, I’ve made lots of new friends which really has been very cool, getting out of my little bubble and into the red one. Thanks everyone who’s commented on my art, photos and t-shirts. I really like youse a lot. Hope you have a very merry new years as well. Appreciate what you’ve got. Keep on keepin it on! lotsa love, sunset.

Thank you so very, very much for checking out “Dolly”. It was my first attempt at writing a story:) The response was so positive that I’ve decided to work on volume 2 “The Dolly Mama”. I will complete it by Spring of 2009. I appreciate all of you so much! Joining RedBubble and getting to know so many wonderful and creative individuals has been probably the most enjoyable experiences I have had. Thanks again!

Soul’s Sanctuary My soul’s sanctuary is oftentimes fervent. / The sanctuary stimulates the soul. / It is steadfast soul that never grows old. My soul is a sanctuary of sacred truths. / It does not belong to Sister Ruth. My mother’s soul has grown old. / Still, it is a sanctuary of gold. My soul sanctuary is all my own. / It is a soul which can never be cloned. / It is a soul. It is all that I own. / I was once a child, / Now I am grown. / My soul is not my own The complexities of a woman’s worth / Lies in her soul, not in her birth. Luke 1:46 KJV And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, / And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

After 10 years as a teaching assistant and 4 years of uni at last I am finished and can begin work as a primary school teacher. Second finally… We have moved into Trimdon Station, Deaf Hill County Durham. This a beautiful place lots of rolling hills, green spaces, wind turbines (which I think are beautiful), and a whole host of wildlife. As soon as we have unpacked fully and the holidays are upon us, watch out for the photos arriving on RB. Third finally… My mum is now a member of RB please check out her work, “MaryMina”:http://www.redbubble.com/people/marymina she is looking for comments so please red her profile. Also please check out my father in laws work, “Alan Thackray.”:http://www.redbubble.com/people/alanthackray Well I think that is all except to say thank you to you all for your comments about my work and for the annonymous people that have bought my art work.

hi, this is my first journal entry. it’s been quite the month. i work with the pacific arts hawaii and they put my photos on snapfish this month and made up my new business cards, then so many of you asked me to join redbubble and facebook and i did and i’ve been trying to get my work posted and join in. then last week i got a job mentoring a young fella who wants to be a photographer. i start working with him this week. / a lot of my work this week was done on the volcano and at the beach, then saturday i went to an informational fair in pahoa town, i lived there 20 years before moving to hilo. it was great seeing old friends and i ended up working. a friend of mine is a counsel woman for the district and asked me if i would photograph the event. i got some great images, usually i shoot landscapes, flowers, seascapes, but not people, i don’t want to get into dealing with releases, but since this was public i was told no releases were needed and everyone seemed quite happy to smile and pose for me. so it’s been quite the month and quite the busy week. this week looks like more of the same and that’s fine with me. the more i have the camera in my had the hapier i am. / aloha pumehana / malia io (mary jo)
