  • July 7, 2007, Martinique Beach, eastern shore of Nova Scotia. Three kilometers of pristine sand, the Atlantic Ocean, and only us and one other couple. Is this great, or what? And in addition, the beach encompasses a bird sanctuary and boardwalks, and is one of those places where you can always find a spot all by yourself, to enjoy to the fullest. / Sony DSCF828 camera. / If you’d like a day hike, go East from Dartmouth on Highway 7/107 until you get to the village of Musquodoboit Harbour. In the village watch for the sign to Martinique Beach, turn right onto that road and follow it to the end. You’ll end up right beside the miles of beach and bird sanctuary. There’s boardwalks, facilities, but no food. Take your own lunch! If you’re a surfer, the waves are usually quite good. Enjoy!

  • , sailor’s delight. Or so the old saying goes. We often visit Martinique Beach on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, which is the longest beach in the province, is quite good for surfing, and also is part of a large protected bird sanctuary. So there’s something for everyone, and miles of beach to explore. As it’s somewhat off the beaten track, there’s lots of space for everyone. This evening in September 2005 we decided to stay until after dark and were rewarded with a really flaming sunset over a relatively quiet Atlantic Ocean. / For those who may want to visit, take Highway 7 east from Dartmouth for about 30 miles to the village of Musquodoboit Harbour, and watch for the Martinique Beach sign on your right. The road is paved and well maintained and ends right at the beach so you can’t get lost. There are change rooms and toilets but no canteens or other food, so pack a lunch if you plan to stay awhile. Leave the world behind, and be happy for doing so. / Sony DSCF828 camera.

  • Martinique is a French Caribbean island. West indies. / Black sand on the North beaches and white sand on the South. The infamous volcano of Mt. Pelée, on this photo, looms over the village of St. Pierre on the French Caribbean Island of Martinique. This sleepy little village shows little of the grandeur of turn-of-the-century St. Pierre, which was a vibrant colonial city, known to European tourists as the "Paris of the West Indies." With its red-tiled cottages, rambling streets, and tropical vegetation, this prosperous little city was renowned for its beauty. In the official 1894 census, the population of St. Pierre was around 20,000. Although most were native Martiniquans, the wealth and political power were controlled largely by Creoles and a few French colonial officials and civil servants. No one at the time could have predicted the horror that was to descend on this tropical paradise with the reawakening of Mt. Pelée in the Spring of 1902.
