It’s the largest egret in the Old World, and thus has garnered the name Great White Egret. But in the Americas, the white form of the Great Blue Heron is larger and warrants that name. In the United States, the Great Egret used to be called the American Egret but that was hardly appropriate, since the species range extends beyond America and indeed farther than other herons.

  • Taken at Celestun in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula these flamingos are feeding in amazing numbers in a tidal estuary flanked by mangrove forests… tho there used to be even more until some recent hurricanes dispersed some of the breeding groups to elsewhere… more details here Taken with a compact camera as I was not confident in taking my new dslr afloat on a boat trip yet! Pity tho – an opportunity well and truly missed! And here is a shot of a mangrove pool in the nearby forest /

  • Nikon D40x with 18-135 mm zoom, handheld from kayak, converted post-production and added hi-contrast.

  • Mountain bog on the Blue RIdge Parkway near Linville, North Carolina. This photo was taken late in the afternoon. When I started photographing it was very dark and foggy. It began raining and the camera got wet. I was getting ready to drive away but then the fog began to lift and the sun almost came out. I hopped out of the car and took a few more pictures. About 10 minutes later the dark skies, fog, and rain reappeared. Nikon D50 / The photo shown below, “A Hint of Red” was taken of the same bog but in early Fall. / / !

  • Photo taken at a marsh I love to frequent in Quinte West, Ontario, Canada. This male mute swan was putting on a wonderful display for his female partner during mating season. As he normally just floats about the marsh, I was thrilled to capture this! Canon Rebel EOS XTi with 70-200mm f/4 L IS lens. ISO 200, f/7.1, SS 1/2000, AP mode / / Bird Gallery / ADD RENEE TO YOUR WATCHLIST

  • In a small inlet with its winding waterway is one of the quaint landscapes that Cape Cod is known for. It reminds us of long lazy summer days basking in the sun. Taken with a Canon XTI with wide angle lens 12-24 / f/4 / 1/1000 sec / ISO-100 / 24mm

  • Small inlet on Cape Cod with a quaint scenic view of this waterway and marsh. A small blue boat sits in the ready for long lazy summer days of drifting in the water. Taken with a Canon XTI and wide angle lens 12-24mm / f/8 / 1/800 / ISO100 / 24mm

  • The water is a mix of salt and fresh water, creating a very interesting environment for Great Blue Herons. I watched this bird for some time, as it fed on very small fish. I loved the bird against the marsh grasses when it decided to move on. The reflection in the tidal pool was definitely a bonus. The image was captured at Campbell River on Vancouver Island, Canada, using a Nikon D700, Nikkor 600 mm lens and 1.4 teleconverter on a Gitzo monopod.

  • Yosemite National Park, CA

  • Located on Cape Cod an inlet marsh area comes in and out with the tides. Taken with a Canon XTI and wide angle lens 12-24 / f/8 / ISO-200 / 1/800 sec / 24mm

  • Night falls….the marshy pond is lit by the setting sun….the reeds and bull rushes glow in silhouette…soon the pond will freeze over trapping life till next spring….The Third and Fourth Sorrow.. Watercolour on Arches Paper…two other paintings in the series are shown below…they are unpublished at the moment… The first sorrow of autumn / Is the slow goodbye / Of the garden who stands so long in the evening- / A brown poppy head, / The stalk of a lily, / And still cannot go. The second sorrow / Is the empty feet / Of a pheasant who hangs from a hook with his brothers. / The woodland of gold / Is folded in feathers / With its head in a bag. And the third sorrow / Is the slow goodbye / Of the sun who has gathered the birds and who gathers / The minutes of evening, / The golden and holy / Ground of the picture. The fourth sorrow / Is the pond gone black / Ruined and sunken the city of water- / The beetle’s palace, / The catacombs / Of the dragonfly. And the fifth sorrow / Is the slow goodbye / Of the woodland that quietly breaks up its camp. / One day it’s gone. / It has only left litter- / Firewood, tentpoles. And the sixth sorrow / Is the fox’s sorrow / The joy of the huntsman, the joy of the hounds, / The hooves that pound / Till earth closes her ear / To the fox’s prayer. And the seventh sorrow / Is the slow goodbye / Of the face with its wrinkles that looks through the window / As the year packs up / Like a tatty fairground / That came for the children....Ted Hughes / Whippoorwill / Cricket Call

  • This is my interpretation of the “Third Sorrow” of Ted Hughes “Seven Sorrows of Autumn”, which on the surface appears to be a sad poem but I think it’s really a paean to autumn....see the Fourth Sorrow below Watercolour on Watercolour on DrawMaster Paper The first sorrow of autumn / Is the slow goodbye / Of the garden who stands so long in the evening- / A brown poppy head, / The stalk of a lily, / And still cannot go.
