This is the brand new lights and marqee (electronic :-( . . . ) of the very OLD D&R Theater in Aberdeen, Washington. Back in the day it was home to vaudeville, and then gave way to movies. Long after it had been closed, a group of us community theater folks revived it a bit by performing a few plays there, which was like stepping into a time machine. Many years later, long after the stage lay vacant, my sons’ funk band rented a practice space in the old building. When I’d come and listen, I’d poke around the old place and feel nostalgic. Now new owners are working hard to restore the old D&R (don’t know what the D and R stand for …), with promise of all new seats and other amenities, but to preserve the beautiful carpets, brass, sweeping balcony walkway, painted murals, and the awesome chandelier, to be a A-list movie theater. I’ll be eager to bring my camera to the grand opening.

On July 13, 2009 this image was featured in the JPG Cast-Offs group. On July 12, 2009 this image was featured in The Heartland group. The neon marquee for the Moonlite Theatre located in Abingdon, Virginia. The Moonlite is a 454-car capacity drive-in that opened in 1948. Still in operation in the summer months, it is the oldest continuously-open drive-in theatre in the state of Virginia. This image was created from a photograph that I took of the State Theatre Marquee in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I took the original image into Photoshop and used the Cutout filter to create a painted look. I then used Photoshop in LAB mode to intensify the colors by intensifying the A and the B curves. In many ways this image isn’t that much different than the original. My goal was to create an image which was more focused on color, texture and shape and less on a realistic capture of the subject. A less processed shot of the same subject can be seen here

I took this photo on the day after the Rolling Stones had played in Roundhay Park, Leeds. I didn’t get to the gig, but I felt sure there would be some photo opportunities to be had in the aftermath. This marquee was on the side of slope and it stood out for me as soon as I saw it. The wind was blowing, creating lots of rolling shapes in the canvas. I shot a full roll of film of the inside.

La Paloma Theatre, Encinitas, CA in North San Diego. The theatre opened on February 11, 1928 with the film “The Cohen’s and Kelly’s in Paris.” The event was attended by soon to be Academy Award winner Mary Pickford who rode her bike to the opening. La Paloma (The Dove) was one of the first theatres to show “Talkies.” Talking pictures premiered in 1927 with the Warner Bros. film “The Jazz Singer” starring Al Jolson. Making the transition from silent pictures to “talkies” didn’t happen over night, so La Paloma was also equipped with a beautiful pipe organ, a standard piece of theatre equipment during the Silent era. Films in the early days of motion pictures were usually preceded by a vaudeville stage act, and La Paloma was well suited for that. Over the years many performers have graced the stage of La Paloma. Musical artists as diverse as Loreena McKennitt, Nickel Creek, Ralph Stanley, Jerry Garcia and Eddie Vedder. La Paloma Theatre continues to show films regularly and is a big part of Encinitas hosting many community and City functions throughout the year. March 2009.

Built in 1946, The Ken Cinema opened as the first theatre to bring quality foreign films to San Diego and continues to offer a wide variety of films, from independent fare to foreign language cinema to restored classics. / I lived a short walk from the theatre for a time while in college and got to know The Ken very well. / The Ken Cinema is San Diego’s last single screen theatre.

Not all windows in Nafplio look pristine. In fact the majority of them have seen better days. Nafplio was the first capital of modern Greece, before King Otto moved the country’s base to Athens. A lot of the old town properties are primarily Neoclassical in style and stem back to the late 19th century or early 20th when the town saw much prosperity. However their ragged appearance today, does not mean that the buildings are necessarily abandoned or unoccupied. On the contrary, most are perfectly functional. They just wear their age on their sleeve…
