Maroubra Beach on a really good sunrise
North end of Maroubra Beach, where I lay and read so many Readers Digest Condensed books, in my teenage years.
Taken before sunrise, while the storm clouds looked ominous, they were gone an hour later and it was a blue bird day. 5 mninute exposure.
Approaching storms make for the most dramatic light and this is just one example. Taken on a Hassselblad 6×6 with a 40mm lens I was able to capture the incoming surf and the mood of the storm as it made it’s way to the coastline. After taking this shot I was soaked to the bone by the torrential rain. The shot is straight from the camera.
This image was taken at lovely Mahon Pool, Maroubra (South Sydney). I used a 5 minute exposure at 5.10am. There is a slight bit of movement in the image caused by a wave surging past and as the camera was very low to the ground it very nearly got very wet. A little tripod movement didn’t worry me at all – i was just happy to get such the shot! Lucky the water was warm because i got very wet!
I was swimming at Maroubra rock pool one evening last month… there were these two guys helping another chap find his wedding band which he had lost while swimming laps earlier….

Amongst all the old, dust-covered rubbish, last night, while looking for something else, I picked up a piece of curled-up old negative 35mm film and was transported via scanner, back to about 1962. / / Found best (high school-) friend, Terry, relaxing, on our veranda, in Flint Street, Matraville (Now Hillsdale). / / My mother, in the backyard, in Flint Street, Matraville and a fellow Wollongong Teachers College student (He might also have been called Terry) relaxing between lectures. / / I am sure of the other W.T.C., student, in this picture, fellow Dutch-born, Wollongong Teachers College student, Harry Postema. (My mother’s maiden name was Postma!). / / This find has taken me back to the fun we had, finding spaces like cloak-rooms, to play Euchre, between lectures. (That card-game got me started, later on years of playing 500!) / / This was a fellow student, sitting opposite me, in the steam train, on the way from Sydney Central to Wollongong, on (very early) Monday mornings. / / Somehow, as my time-machine is coming in for a landing, my mother is mixed up with the pathway to the teachers college building. / / And still I went to Potter’s Dance studio, in Maroubra Junction, on Saturday mornings, with the regular break taken, half-way through, when we all went down to the milkbar, down the passage way, on on Maroubra Road. / My standard drink: A lime milk-shake! Yum!! / / Have met up again with best friend, Terry, within the last year. / He came to my birthday party/exhibition opening. / / And the three of us, Hans, Terry and I had a great chin-wag about the….here it comes!!: Good old days. / I do have other pictures from those Flint Street days! / / Could easily call them Happy Days and Terry had a touch of The Fonze! / /
My friend was swimming in Sydney’s Maroubra pool and I was lucky enough to snap her ghost-like image.
