Also known as the Square- lipped Rhino due to it’s wide mouth. The name White Rhino arose from a misinterpretation by early English settlers of the Afrikaans word “wyd”, (derived from the Dutch word “wijd”), which means “wide”. / There are 2 subspecies of White Rhino, the Southern White, (as seen in this image), also the most prolific of the two subspecies, and the Northern White, which is critically endangered & thought to number only 13 individuals world wide. / Monarto Zoological Conservation Park – Adelaide. Standing here watching these huge waves crashing in through these giant cliffs was an amazing experience, the power and relentless pounding was ferocious but also incredibly hypnotic, I almost felt like I was being pulled in despite the fact that we were safely away from the real action. I’ve been a little distracted these past few weeks and feeling a little at odds with my creativity. Today I thought I’d try something a little different for me. This was created from one image, and is not a composite. Will post the original unedited shot on request for anyone interested. / Hope you like it. Image copyright © Marion Cullen. I had the great honor and privilege of working on this collaboration with dear friend and wonderful photographer, Marion Cullen. Marion’s work has always been a great source of inspiration for me. Her photography not only shows beauty and thought, but also has lots of feeling. / About the artwork: I blended together Marion’s photo, ‘Kindred Soul’ and my ‘Pondering Lion’ fractal. I tried to capture the feeling of Marion’s photo with the activity of my fractal. The end result was this. A pondering lion takes a moment to reflect on the kindred soul that once roamed free. This art work is for all of the animals that are held in captivity. / Title by Marion. :-) Please visit Marion’s Gallery Lumineux / You will always be greeted with a smile. :-) /

The extreme angles, and highly contrasty treatment of this image represents my view on how Australia’s Indigenous peoples are still very much a marginalised community, pushed to the far fringes of our society. / I believe our past and present treatment to be nothing short of disgraceful. Statistics pertaining to our indigenous communities, regarding population health, infant mortality and general living standards, would NEVER be tolerated by our otherwise white, western societies. So why do our governments, and we ourselves, still turn the other cheek, & allow some to be treated this way, when we otherwise believe ourselves to be part of a civilized society? Same Signal House about 3 minutes and 20 mtrs further down the hill. That storm was moving really fast. I literally had to stick my camera under my jumper and make a dash for cover as soon as the shutter clicked after taking this….even so I got well and truly drenched. As an aside, I have no idea why, but this old signal house really gave me the creeps, I couldn’t stay inside it for long. Image copyright © Marion Cullen. All rights reserved. Recently, thanks to the support of, & constant encouragement from, my step father-in-law, who is also a wonderful pastel artist, I took my first tentative and exciting steps for entering my first public photography exhibition in the Royal Adelaide National Exhibition of Photography. According to an article in the July/August 08 edition of Image Magazine, this is also one of Australia’s largest photographic competitions, and the article goes on to state that there were over 1500 entries submitted last year alone. I must state now that I only found this article after I had submitted my entries, and before I heard if any had been accepted. I think had I found it earlier, and realized the enormity of it, no kidding, I never would have entered. I had no idea just how complex the process could be until now, and I can tell you it was not only hard work getting the works prepared, but was incredibly nerve wracking, (remember this is my first). I have personally viewed many past Royal Show exhibitions and for some reason always considered this to be a relatively minor event, but I have to admit, until you are on the other side of the fence, you simply have no idea what’s involved…I can say I do now, and will never look at an exhibition/art comp quite the same way ever again, that is, without appreciation of the time, effort and dedication involved, from both an artist’s and exhibitor’s/ competition administrator’s point of view. To cut a long story short, there were 7 categories that could be enter all up, including 2 novice sections that I could include myself in since I had never exhibited or competed before. Each category had a maximum of 4 entries, so equated to a max of 28 images that could be submitted in total. I submitted 24. The closing date for submissions was early July, judging early August. Artists would be informed by letter approx 2 weeks later informing if works had been accepted or rejected. Needless to say, when the letter arrived last Fri I was too nervous to open it, the last time I remember feeling like that when a letter arrived was when I was 16 and getting my year 12 results. I think I wore a groove in the floor from pacing, until Geoff basically took me by the shoulders, looked me dead in the eye and told me if I didn’t open the bloody thing he WOULD! lol Anyway, below are the results. I didn’t win a prize, and really don’t care, I am just over the moon that I was able to get 11 out of 24 submissions accepted. I am rapt! The works will be on show for 2 weeks between the 5th-13th September, and with an estimated 1/2 million people coming through the gates that’s one big potential viewing audience. ( In 2007 – 501,428 people attended). If you like you can check out the photographs accepted HERE To anyone contemplating doing something similar, I can only say ‘Go for it’, it’s not only a fun learning experience, it also helps you gauge where you are at with your art. If there are any other Adelaideans out there doing the same this year, please let me know so I can keep an eye out for your works. Who knows, we may even see each other there! Mx
