  • A taste of things to come. Our objective was to see the whales at the Head of the Bight, The Great Australian Bight Marine Park, South Australia. We left early September hoping to catch the whales and their babies before they left for the colder waters of the South Pole. The timing couldn’t have been better as the whales were due to leave in about a fortnight. This is an important breeding and calving area for the Southern Right Whale and the Australian Sea-lion. This is a major tourist attraction and should not be missed. A permit is required but money well spent. There is a large viewing platform and the whales are down below. This is open in the winter months. At the time we were there, there were 56 whales, we counted 24. The scenery is amazing, cliffs one side, white milky sand-hills the other side, blue skies, pale blue seas and fifty six whales down below all in their natural environment with foamy waves crashing on the rocks and the spray rising up. This must be the best view on earth and it’s here in South Australia.
