In my traditionally composed paintings of flowers and Greek icons, I express the peace, relaxation, and spirituality she connects with the act of painting. Although I renders oil-on-canvas floral subjects in hues reminiscent of the Renaissance tradition, I masterfully uses negative space and photographic angles to produce graphic images with a decidedly modern sensibility. My works appear starkly divided into two categories, but they are intrinsically linked by my personal symbolism influenced by my deep faith and personal story. Rather than painting to express the sorrows of my past, I paints to help the viewer escape the stresses of everyday life and retreat to a simpler time where forgotten values are embraced. www.marinella-art.ch

160cm x 100cm / 2008 / oil and gold leaf on canvas “embracing forgotten values” Oringinal oil painting / by / Marinella THE PROJECT No. 1 For the first painting of this series I’ve painted the classic image of Jesus on the Cross, however, this painting is not so much about Jesus as it is about his Mother. One of my favourite subjects to paint is what I call Mother-Love, which is the 2nd in this series, and my point here is, what is the worse thing that could happen to that Mother? The painting is about forgiveness. Jesus forgiving, his Mother forgiving the murderers of her son, here there is also the youngest of the 12 apostles, the other 11 are represented as stones at the bottom of the cross, all asking forgiveness, and lastly there is a white bird, a symbol of my deceased father who is also giving his forgiveness. So I suppose I’m asking a question, has forgiveness a value today? Are we, like these people were, capable of true forgiveness? It is my hope that while looking at this painting the viewer realises that whatever the difficulties of modern life, for example, losing a child today, without being able to forgive we cannot move on and our lives not only lose in quality but also it’s essence.
160cm x 100cm / 2008 / oil and gold leaf on canvas “embracing forgotten values” Oringinal oil painting / by / Marinella THE PROJECT No. 2 For the 2nd painting in the series I have chosen a mother with a child, a very old theme which existed even in pre-Christian art and which appears in the first icons of Coptic art in Egypt. Although I have painted Maria and Jesus as subjects I have not actually painted a star over Maria as is normal and which would indicate that she is a virgin, because this painting is about the unconditional love a normal healthy woman feels instinctively for her child. A love which protects and defends, indeed as a healthy society should defend its children. But is this love truly respected today? I expect the viewer to comprehend that Mother-Love is the first love, which is the love we should have all known since we are somebody’s child, and that it is the source of all life, a love which will protect and defend us forever.

160cm x 100cm / 2009 / oil and gold leaf on canvas “embracing forgotten values” Oringinal oil painting / by / Marinella THE PROJECT No. 3 The 3rd in this series is a Byzantine image which is a clear and simple message of truths which I hope still has value for us today as they did then, the miracle called birth and respect for the pregnant woman. The Byzantines saw art very differently than we do today, for them art was capable of healing, of performing miracles and offered protection, for example, during the invasion of Constantinople in 1453 they walked around the city walls with icons in an attempt to protect themselves from the Turks. I must say here that I have sold some of my icons to people who still believe in those ideas, however, my point here is to remind the viewer that for us life starts with a woman becoming pregnant and that must be seen as a miracle in its self. My Maria is holding her stomach, something that has never been done before, and I did that because as a woman who has been twice with child I am sure that she already knew she was pregnant, therefore the blessing of the Archangel Gabriel is for all mothers. It is a blessing which offers to protect and defend women in a moment when they deserve the utmost respect from our society. But do they?
160cm x 100cm / 2009 / oil and gold leaf on canvas “embracing forgotten values” Oringinal oil painting / by / Marinella THE PROJECT No. 4 The 4th completed painting for the project is called “I Ambelmas;” it is a painting of Jesus and his 12 apostles. The first icon reproducing the image of Jesus, or of God, was believed to have been painted by Luke, and there seems to have been made a statue of Jesus seen by Eusebius of Caesarea in the late 3th century. The Islamic and Jewish religions see the reproduction of God, or any human figure as blasphemous and painters such as Mark Rothko have been successful in producing highly spiritual art without reference to the human form. This painting is about values, in particular about knowledge, wisdom and justice. Here I’ve painted Jesus giving, through his blessing, the power of healing and to perform miracles to his apostles, this to me becomes symbolic that healing comes from the word or knowledge or wisdom, and reinforces the importance of culture. Self healing, or self knowledge, should be a process which brings us, through justice, and therefore law, to creating and maintaining a healthy and balanced society for all of us to live in. This painting could also been seen as depicting the first church, the 12 apostles and the 52 disciples, but I am not interested in the development of the Christian church, it’s schism’s and conflicts, but I am interested in picking out those values which I consider fundamental to our well being today.
