- Please find time to read and email before Friday the 18th January – / / WATER YES – DESAL NO ! / As many may know the Victorian state Gov. is endevouring to build the largest desal plant in the southern hemisphere on the beautiful Bass coast…one that many of you may know… A coast that in the last 2months alone has had humpback, killer and southern right whales sighted, penguins, seals, fish feed off these waters and estauries etc etc – foul the foodchain and it can’t be good…. / / This proposed development will provide 150million litres of water to Melbourne/Geelong each year BUT… / / - dump 200million litres of salty brine offshore at the mouth of the beautiful Powlett river and associated wetlands annually. / / - create 30,000tonnes of iron rich landfill annually. / / - burn electricity/CO2 equivalent to an extra ~280,000cars on the road annually… / / / If you live in the Melbourne/Geelong area your water will be owned by an international company negotiating their own rates for which the gov. will buy it from them. / Every home in Melb has 6-8times the water it uses fall on it’s own roof (clean & free forever) – it’s estimated if 60% of these homes had tanks there would be no water issue in Melbourne what so ever… / Concerned about drinking recycled water ? I think it should be appropriate to those of this community for me to share what has been generously shared with me. Thus -this story: During World War II, a US marine was separated from his unit on a Pacific island. The fighting had been intense, and in the smoke and / the crossfire he had lost touch with his comrades. Alone in the jungle, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his / direction. Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realized that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be killed. As he waited, he prayed, “Lord, if it be your will, please protect me. Whatever your will though, I love you and trust you. Amen.” After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw / close. He thought, “Well, I guess the Lord isn’t going to help me out of this one.” Then he saw a spider begin to build a web over the front of his cave. As he watched, listening to the enemy searching for him all the while, the spider layered strand after strand of web across the opening of the cave. “Hah, he thought. “What I need is a brick wall and what the Lord has sent me is a spider web. God does have a sense of humor.” As the enemy drew closer he watched from the darkness of his hideout and could see them searching one cave after another. As they came to his, he got ready to make his last stand. To his amazement, however, after glancing in the direction of his cave, they moved on. Suddenly, he realized that with the spider web over the entrance, his cave looked as if no one had entered for quite a while. “Lord, forgive me,” prayed the young man. “I had forgotten that in you a spider’s web is stronger than a brick wall.” We all face times of great trouble. When we do, it is so easy to / forget what God can work in our lives, sometimes in the most / surprising ways. And remember with God, a mere spider’s web becomes a brick wall of protection. Lord, I thank you for all our / Military, and their families. / I Pray for your Brick wall of protection, / to protect them everyday!!! / Amen

I’d like to take this opportunity to announce my plans for huge project. This will be, by far, the biggest piece I’ve ever done and I expect it to take several months. I’ll be working on it in between smaller projects. I’m posting this now because if people know about it, I’ll be more motivated to work on it. I’m quite excited about it, actually. The scene will be an underwater coral reef. I’ll do it in colored pencil on 30”x15” paper. I have done extensive research on various types of coral, fish and other sea life that live in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and have put together a scene with a many of these animals with a great variety of color. The layout is complete, and I’ve just started adding color. I will be keeping updates on my blog and will post updated images here as well. Step 1: Research, Sketch and Layout (4 hours) Step 2: Giant Sea Clam (8 hours) / Step 3: Yellow Damselfish, Longfin Bannerfish and Red Soft Coral (5.5 hours) / Step 4: Red and Blue Sea Stars, Leather Coral and Purple Soft Coral (8 hours, added 06/18/08) / Step 5: Hard Coral and Pink Soft Coral (6 hours, added 07/15/08) / Step 6: Green Sea Fan, start of Red Lionfish (2 hours, added 08/30/08) / Step 7: Orange Sea Whip, Green Hard Coral, Clown Triggerfish (2 hours, added 01/07/09) / Step 8: Red Lionfish, Brain Coral, Sea Anemones, Orange Fairy Basslets (added 05/13/09) / Step 9: Plate Coral, Staghorn Coral, Manta Rays (added 05/21/09) /
The Interview with Sandra Sigfusson: !http://images-1.redbubble.net/img/art/size:small/...
The Interview with Sandra Sigfusson: / Mushroom Tower / Beaded Web / Serenade / Pink Neon / Interwoven Guitars / Puppy Eyes How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? / I’ve had an interest in photography for many years, but it has only been the last 2 years that I’ve picked up my camera usage and entered the digital photography age. I think that with digital I am more expressive with my images, more open to the possiblities, which in turn has had a very positive affect on my life. I realized, for me anyway, that viewing the world around me throught the lens of a camera has made me see there is more to life than just the broad sense of my existance. The pieces in the center of a flower were never so interesting to me until I saw them through the lens, and thus I now view everything with my natural eyes in a whole new way – I’ve learned to appreciate the details. What advice can you give someone just beginning their creative path? / Explore, explore, explore. Always be willing to learn. My best sucesses in learning are in finding other artists I admire and mimic their style for the sake of learning, rather than to specifically copy them. Artists have taken their inspiration from those who succeeded before them for hundreds of years. Learn what makes what they do so special and then find a way to use that knowledge to forge your own style. Tell us about a person or moment that has made your time on RedBubble particularly special or meaningful? / I was invited to join the Red Bubble group by a very dear friend (A90Six) and I was smitten with the site and their attitudes toward artistry immediately. A90six has been an inspiration to me both artistically and personally for quite some time and his invitation to join RB was yet another brilliant idea. I’d have to say that I’ve never been more inspired than I am now after spending time to view the incredible array of talent that his here. Red Bubble is by far the most respectfully run site I’ve encountered as an artist – they do truly seem to be here for us. What do you hope others will get from your art? / This is the toughest question for me to answer. I don’t know that I’ve thought of my photographs that way. If I had to give you an answer today, it would be that my work pleases their eye. I’m not a solid technical artist yet, so my current focus is on pleasing the visual senses on a more simplistic level. I aspire to be technically sound in the very near future which will allow me to take my visions through a camera lens to the next level. Show & tell us about five works on RedBubble that have moved or inspired you? / It is so hard to narrow it down to just 5 artists – wow. I mean seriously, the variety of talent on this site is simply mind blowing. A90Six is my first pick because of his inate ability to see the richness of what he photographs before he even points his camera in that direction. He has the ability to make even the simplist things look amazing and I am truly inspired by that in him. My all time favourtie shot of his is “The Square”. / / It’s like he stepped back in time to capture this amazing moment – truly captivating scene. My second pick would be Mark Peterson. Mark is a visionary artist who takes his images to a surreal and intensely ornate and rich level that I adore. His work reminds me of the tapestries I’ve seen in the Louvre in Paris, drenched in detail and texture, much like life itself. / / This is one of many of Mark’s images that I love: My third choice would be Peter Marin. My favourite image of his is Beach Planet. / / I have been fascinated and experimenting recently with polar coordinates, and this image of Peter’s just blew me away. Peter is a very well rounded photographer/artist. His pieces are incredibly detailed, wonderfully framed and his sense & vision of beauty is truly inspiring to me. I also love his variety of subject matter – he seems to have no boundaries to his talent. One of my all-time favourite images here on Red Bubble right now is a photo by Basia McAuley. / / This is such a brilliant capture – I love the moody treatment and the beauty of the moment. It is to me, hauntingly beautiful. I aspire to capture moments like this with my own lens in time. One artist who I adored, who is no longer on this site, is British photographer Douglas Black. His nude works were absolutely outstanding. He understood the human form and photographed it in ways that were more than just beautiful, they were sensual, tateful, elegant. I wish he would return.
The Red Bubble Interview – Featuring Peter Marin:!http://images-0.redbubble.net/img/art/framecolor:black/framestyle:box20/mattecolor:of…
The Red Bubble Interview – Featuring Peter Marin: / / 1. How does being a creative person and pursuing your creativity affect other aspects of your life? That’s (not) a nice easy question to start with. Let’s put it this way, the other aspects in my life are almost consumed by it. I’m sure I have a deficiency in my brain that prevents me from placing my creative thoughts and desires to one side for any length of time, it drives my wife insane because we are totally opposite in that regard. 2. What advice can you give someone just beginning their creative path? The best advice I can give is to: / a) keep challenging yourself and; b) to learn something new each and every day no matter how small. And network yourself with as many likeminded people as you can. 3. Tell us about a person or moment that has made your time on Red Bubble particularly special or meaningful? Almost impossible to answer this one, there are many people that make my time on RB special. One person that has made me re-analyze what I have been doing regarding my wedding work has been Katialo. His wedding images have inspired me to no end, not that I wish to replicate what he does, but to look and think outside the box for the next photo. 4. What do you hope others will get from your art? That’s a good one. My style of shooting is very simple I think, not overly complicated in it’s construction. So therefore I guess my work is detail orientated to a large degree and that’s the part that I try and get across to the viewer. / 5. Show & tell us about five works on RedBubble that have moved or inspired you? / I can’t single out any five images specifically, that would be quite a task….. so I’ll list the five artists that have inspired me instead. Luka Skracic ~ http://www.redbubble.com/people/lukaskracic / katialo ~ http://www.redbubble.com/people/katialo / Hien Nguyen ~ http://www.redbubble.com/people/methd / koukei ~ http://www.redbubble.com/people/koukei / Heather Hartkamp ~ http://www.redbubble.com/people/deerfield / Interviewer’s Note: / Thank you Peter for allowing me to share these questions of you with other’s here on redbubble. Cheers, Sandra.

Take a look at some remarkable photographs of Iraq war, with so many of the world’s countries there now, by SSGT. He’s an American Marine, and he’s in battle, and he carries his camera with him….to everyone’s benefit. These are extraordinary photographs and well worth viewing and commenting on. And it’s a ‘real time’ view from the front lines. How incredible that is to me. / This is primo photo-journalism, picture-taking on the run. / Although I’m not a photographer, I know there are interesting things being done by SSGT with the kind of camera he uses, exposures, etc. It’s serious work, all very human, history in the making. / Please drop in and see yourselves. / Best to all, / Barbara

Ok.. I’m really happy, surprised and excited once more. Just saw that I’m a new challenge winner once again / This What Inspires you? challenge hosted by the Prize Challenges!! group is one that speaks volumes to me, and it seems that RB artists took notice of it. / The winning image Arlington West 2007, Santa Barbara, California portrays an ongoin display of the casualties in Iraq on East Beach in Santa Barbara, to protest against the war in Iraq, and increase the public awareness regarding the military and political fallout of staying there. Each Sunday morning thousands of crosses, as the number of the fallen, for that day, are placed in the sand and volunteers are providing the public with up to the moment information on casualties plus individual stories on the fallen. This image was taken at memorial day 2007 as a tribute and memorial and as a cry for peace… Yes, I am inspired by dedicated people and their efforts to restore peace and humanity back… Thank you all for your support, votes and appreciation, and to the Prize Challenges!! group hosts for this wonderful challenge . It means a lot to me.

To those people that enjoy shooting for HDR processing, ie: bracketed exposures, fed into Photomatix (mainly) and tweaked in Photoshop (mainly), here’s a technique that I’ve been dabbling with recently, which slightly deviates from the common tutorials we’ve all read about in various places around the net. The most common route for producing HDR images IMO is to load your bracketed photos into Photomatix for alighnment and tonemapping, saving as either a jpeg or tiff (hopefully the latter). Then open in Photoshop to adjust contrast either by level or curves blah blah blah, save. / Voila, we are done. The road I’ve taken deviates in a few places, I still leave the tonemapping part to Photomatix, but not the alighnment part at the start of the process. Most folks stay away from Photoshop for HDR creation, but I found that PS (CS3) does a far better job of aligning the 3 bracketed exposures and also with producing the latent file that gets tonemapped. So, here is how it works, for me anyway. / (It might be a good idea to mention that I’m using CS3 and not sure if other versions of CS do HDR or not.) / I load my 3 bracketed exposures into CS3 under File>Automate>Merge to HDR and then browse for the 3 files to be processed, then tick the Auto Align box . When I have my 3 files just hit OK. / Photoshop will go through it’s auto process and stop with a latent image. I just accept what I have and hit OK again at this screen, then Photoshop will go through it’s merging process, ending up with a flattened image. This is the bit that I believe makes the difference. I save this file in EXR format and then close the file. Photoshop does a far better job of aligning images than Photomatix is capable of IMO, and the files prior tonemapping are less noisy IMO. Your mileage may differ, but from what I’ve trialed and produced I’m liking Photoshop for this job. Next, I launch Photomatix and open my ‘EXR’ file I just made with Photoshop. Now I’m going to use Photomatix to do the tonemapping, as I normally would have done before. I save the t/m’ed file as a 16bit tiff and close the file and exit out of Photomatix. The next two options are personal choice: / The first one involves doing the contrast adjustments in Photoshop and the other is to open Lightroom and import the tiff file from it’s current location and do the final processing. Both methods can produce favorable results…....just different, it’s a taste thing, but either way is worth playing with. As always, when processing my work, if I think I have taken it too far then I probably have….....time to back it off a bit. HDR can look ugly really quickly. Quite a few RB members have Bubble mailed me asking for a run-down on some of my workflow, so I thought I’d put this short explanation together so others may also benefit (or not) from it. Pete

A few of you have showcased the RB artists that you feel are exceptional at their craft. It’s now my turn to do the same. Please take the time to view the following artists Bubblesites: New Artist on RedBubble Monica Di Carlo – Photographer whom I’ve known from other photo sharing sites and am delighted to see her work finally shared here on RB. / Mark Peterson – Digital painter, Photographer, Writer & Poet, whom I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with very recently. Mark is one of the first artists I added to my watchlist when I joined RB, and I find his work very inspirational. / Peter Marin – Photographer / Peter’s specialty is two fold – he’s a fabulous wedding photographer, but certainly not limited in any way to weddings alone, and does phenomenal HDR treatments on his outstanding images. I once had the pleasure of interviewing Peter, and if you’ve missed it, you can access it here / / A90Six – Tony / I’ve been in love with his charm, character & photographs for a long time now – his style is both unique and very beautiful. / Lois Bryan / Lois’s bright, sunny & ever so delightful disposition is so prevelant in her work – you know she’s a good soul by just viewing her images. / Cheers, Sandra.

Hey Everyone. As you well know I am a huge fan of fellow Redbubbler Peter Marin’s work. He shared some fantastic news with me the other day and I just wanted to spread it around with you all because it’s and example of just how many opportunities there are out there to generate an income from your passion as an artist. Even tho Peter hails from the land down under, he recently secured a deal with a Canadian (Montreal based) Skateboard manufacturer who is using a few of his wrecked car images on their skateboards & t-shirt lines. Here is a link to showcase his work on one of the skatebords. Here is the image from Peter’s RB portfolio: The possibilities for sales of your work are endless. Start this new year with an open mind & a belief that you can attract positive things to you. / / Cheers, S.

I am often asked how I go about creating a work of Art… So that had me starting to do WIP’s. Feel this is the best way to see how this NW Oregon Artist creates. This is the photograph I took, that I am using for this piece. Is of my Favorite fighter the FG-1D Corsair, Navy didn’t like them much as these planes were pretty much blind when landing and taking off. Other wise they were a good fighter. / It will be done in Watercolor pencil with a small addition of Ink. Not quite the way I normally do my paintings but I wanted to try to do most of this painting in watercolor. / Here I pencil in the rough shape of the Corsair. / Just started on a murky type of sky background. / Adding the first layers of watercolor and a bit of ink in the dark areas under the wing. / Bit more layers of color, 2nd wash of color on the left wing, first wash of color on the props. / spent a number of hours penciling detail in, around the engine. Started adding color to the inside of the engine and props. / Am taking my time adding the dark shading around the engine, added another layer of color on the props. Still lots of color to add to the engine. It looks like it should be simple to paint but it is anything but simple. Also working on the wing shading. / Continuing to work on the engine, have been spending time working on the lower engine components. / More shading to the body work which needs to be built up slowly to get the best depth. / Added one more wash to the blades. / Should only be a couple more weeks before it is finished. / After about a week break from painting to work on my yarn, I am again working on the Corsair. / Have been working on the lower engine detail and the underside of the fighter. Slowly working layers of color to get the best depth I can. / Still a lot of detail to do. / I put the finishing touches on this old Corsair just this morning. It is sitting on a dirt run away with an ominious sky in the back ground. I have used my favorite 140lb hot press paper, Watercolor pencil and Ink.

I thought I’d share a quick way to blend exposures. / Nothing at all to do with HDR, but more about achieving a more balanced looking image, exposure wise. First off, you will need to bring into Photoshop 2 images shot at least one stop apart via your camera, or RAW processed will do too. / Then, just drag the lighter of the two images on to the darker one, making sure it is stacked perfectly. / Ok, now just go to the top menu and do / 1. Select>Color Range and select Highlights from the drop-down. / 2. Put a tick in the ‘invert’ box and click ok. / 3. Add a Layer Mask, and then click on the Layer Mask to make it active. / 4. Go up to Filter>Blur> Gaussian Blur 250pxls and click ok. / Choose Flatten from the Layer menu up top. / You’re done. / Adjust Levels/Curves to taste if you want. I haven’t displayed any example because I wanted you to try it out for your self and make up your own mind whether or not you think it may be a useful tool to have up your sleeves for future stuff. / If you decide to give this a go, I’d love to know what you think. Good Luck / Peter
