This image is taken from a collection of work titled ‘Journey into the Pure Lands’. These images were taken in the winter of 2003 during a four week trek through the Nepal Himalayas Everest region. We climbed as far as Gokyo, reaching 5500m above sea level. I undertook this journey for a number of reasons. That year had been difficult and had involved loss, at this point in my life I felt that I had nothing to lose but to take up the challenge of trekking a mountain in Nepal. I had always dreamed of doing this, not only for the landscape, but also so I could draw near to the heart of Tibetan Buddhism, something that has influenced my life for a long time. I was not sure what I wanted to find, maybe a challenge to revitalize my life, or to give myself time and space to find some clarity. What I did find was one hell of a challenge! The struggles caused by temperatures dropping as low as -15 and the impact of high altitude really helped me put into perspective some of the emotional adversity I had experienced. The richness and mysticism was a photographers dream, but most of all I was inspired by the peace, humour and great strength I found amongst the Tibetan and Nepalese people despite the adversity they had faced. There was a sense of space and clarity, not just in the landscape, but also amongst many of whom we met. At the end of a hard days trekking the clouds would gather beneath us forming a white blanket almost real enough to walk on. I could describe it as nothing less than the pure lands depicted within Buddhist imagery.

I forget things all the time! / I forget meetings and appointments. / I forget to call and to write. / I forget to check my messages and my agenda. / I forget why I go downstairs to the basement, and I forget what I am looking for on the web. / I forget my cup of coffee in the microwave and my spaghetti sauce on the stove top. / I forget my wet laundry in the washing machine, and I also forget to go pick up my son who’s waiting for me on the other side of town. / I even forget to feed the dog. / The other day, I forgot to put the car on park before getting out and it crashed into our house… No wonder that I forget to bring my camera with me when I go out!!! I will need a huge notebook to copy everything that I keep forgetting all the time. And I will also need a whole box of Tylenol to soothe the pain in my poor cramped hands. Some say that it might just be perimenopause symptoms… maybe, but my grandma died of Alzheimer’s disease 12 years ago. I can’t help but worry a bit about all this forgetfulness. Holy Mantras on Mani stones near to the Vajra Guru or Padmasambhava’s (Guru Rinpoche) sacred cave in Tso Pema (Rewalsar), India / Mani stones are stone plates, rocks or pebbles inscribed, usually, with mantra, as a form of prayer in Tibetan Buddhism. Mani stones are intentionally placed along the roadsides and rivers or placed together to form mounds or cairns as an offering to spirits of place… The mantra OM MANI PADME HUNG / -OM represents the body of all Buddhas; / -MANI means ‘jewel’; / -PADME, means “lotus”; / -HUNG represents the mind of all Buddhas; MANI refers to the jewel that Chenrezig holds in his two central hands and PADME to the lotus he holds in his second left hand. Saying MANI PADME names Chenrezig through his attributes: “the one who holds the jewel and the lotus.” “Chenrezig” or “Jewel Lotus” are two names for the same deity. / When we recite this mantra we are in fact continually repeating the name of Chenrezig. In itself this exercise may look strange. ...this mantra is invested by the grace and power of the mind of Chenrezig who himself gathers the grace and compassion of all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas. ... the mantra is endowed with the capacity to purify our mind from the veils that obscure it. The mantra opens the mind to love and compassion and leads it toward awakening. / http://www.amitabhahospice.org.nz/public/spiritual_support/compassion.php

It was founded by Rigzin Terdak Lingpa in 1676. For nearly 300 years its monastic university trained Nyingma scholars and yogis from all over Tibet… At Monks traditionally studied thirteen major sutra and tantra texts of the Nyingma, and learned the practices stemming from various terma, especially from the lineage of Terdak Lingpa. The monastery had at one time, over one hundred satellites and its throne holder was one of the most revered in Tibet. At the time of the 1959 revolt against Chinese Communist rule in Central Tibet, there were approximately 300 monks at Mindroling. In the years after 1959, the monastery again suffered damage to its buildings, but it was not as severe as at other monasteries such as Ganden. At present, the monastery is still being reconstructed in Tibet… In 1965, Khochhen Rinpoche and small group of monks began the process of re-establishing Mindroling monastery in India. It now contains Ngagyur Nyingma College, one of the largest Buddhist institutes in India.
this was my first painted mask 2006. Then I was inspired by the chaos magic, but as theurgy. I had a really great wish and this sigil symbolised this. – Last year the mask was falling from the wall and was broken; and my wish was never come true.. sometimes the destiny has a dissent. the sigil-ritual is a great possibility to manifest his own wishs at the subconscious mind; love, health, satisfaction etc.. if it is believed about this. It’s assimilable with neurolinguistic programming or affirmations- techniques; you can be what you think. / The power of thoughts can to effect so much if they are at first entered in the subconscious mind. And this is not magic. acrylic painting on ceramic mask. Today fits this song I Can’t Make You Love Me was featured in Colour Me Vibrant Red! 25.9.2009
Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer), Om Mani Padme Hum, out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion. Spinning the written form of the mantra around in a Mani wheel (or prayer wheel) is also believed to give the same benefit as saying the mantra. Various Buddhist schools interpret the mantra differently. But the essence and function of the mantra remain the same. Some schools of Buddhism, especially the Tibetan Buddhist, take the mantra’s six syllables to be symbolic or representation of purification of the six realms of existence. Om—-purifies pride. / Ma—-purifies jealousy and lust for entertainment. / Ni-—-purifies passion and desire. / Pad—-purifies ignorance and prejudice. / Me—--purifies poverty and possessiveness. / Hum—-purifies aggression and hatred. Hence the recital and meditation over the mantra removes ones causes of human suffering/ Tsuglagkhang Temple, McLeod Ganj
