It’s an Orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus), but I’ve used an Anthurium flower as a prop here – couldn’t find any white/light pink orchids at the local florists.

This little ?mantis? was less than 5cm long and clung to the roof of my car for all five minutes it took to drive home and take some photos of it. I love the subtlety of the reflection – the paint on the car roof is by no means in perfect condition, but I think it kind of adds to the effect… and of course ‘reflection’ has a double meaning when added to a meditative-looking praying figure. The Black’n’White conversion was necessary because the Red of the roof and the Yellow/Black of the insect simply didn’t work together for the theme

It was such a strange coincidence that I stumbled across this little dude (velveteagle has informed me that it is actually a ‘dudette’) when I did. My sister captured a green one not three days ago and it was the first time I’d ever seen a praying mantis. EVER. She started telling me that there are all different kinds (like brown ones that look like sticks) and I said I didn’t believe her. Then today I was out shooting in the fields and low and behold; a weird brown mantis thing! I didn’t even know they lived around here! Just goes to show what kinds of things our eyes are open to when a suggestion is put in our heads :) © Cadence Gamache
