This image epitomises a bygone era of elegance, style and charm – halcyon days of weekend house parties attended by “bright young things”, when afternoon tea and croquet on the lawn preceded a civilised evening of cocktails, dinner and charades. The car featured is Halle Selassie’s splendid 1933 Rolls Royce. I recaptured a sense of this era – gracefully modelled by Touchen – at Oldway Mansion, Paignton, Devon, once the home of Isaac Singer, founder of the renowed sewing machine company. Isadora Duncan, the lover of his son Paris, was often seen dancing here – a wild free spirit amidst the opulence.
The subject is a large house, formed in a u-shape, facing to the right. There was no description on the original picture, but it looked like a British manor to me. The place is surrounded by big trees, and the house has strangely church-like steeples rising from the corners. The front door is on the left, where you can see steps leading up to it from the driveway. Oil pastel on white paper.

Featured in the ‘Dorset England’ group, with thanks. Athelhampton is one of the finest 15th century houses in England, containing many magnificently furnished rooms. Visited often by Thomas Hardy, Athelhampton is at the heart of Dorset’s heritage. The Great Hall was built by Sir William Martyn in 1485. The gardens, dating from 1891, are full of vistas and gain much from the fountains and River Piddle flowing through. The walled gardens include the world famous topiary pyramids and two garden pavilions designed by Inigo Thomas. In this unconventional side view you can also see the15th century Dovecote to the right. The low door was opened and it was full of white doves! Canon EOS 400D 18-55mm lens.
My work is digital photography altered to appear as an oil painting – A private manor house in Normandy region of France. Located just a mile behind the beaches of D-Day landings, this house was in the thick of the initial battle for the freedom of Europe-My work really stands out when printed on canvas.

This photo was taken back in the mid 90’s while I was stationed in Belgium. It’s a driveway back to an abandoned manor house and some buildings located next to Chievres Air Base and the SHAPE riding club. The buildings were being used by a local farmer to store his equipment in and the house had been repeatedly vandalized by local teens. I had been told that the house was someplace Hitler use to stay at, although I doubt it. I DO know it was a headquarters for the local SS during world war 2 and the buildings were barracks for the German military. Chievres Air Base was used by the Luftwaffa and there were reports of “bullet holes” in the wall of one building where French and Belgian partisans were executed. Due to the age of the buildings I could never verify this because the brick work was so crumbly. I like how you can still see the trees lining the drive back to the house
