They were able to assemble it in a day, as they used to follow the bison herds on the prairies. Much of their food, shelter, clothing and tools all came from the Bison. So when the herd moved, so did they. Many of their daily rituals revolved around nature. For example; The Tipi was made using 13 poles. The 13 poles in the tipi represents the 13 full moons we have in a given year….When you enter a tipi you go to the left and circle around in a clockwise direction. This represents the way of the sun…The door of the tipi always faces East, to meet the rising sun. The Plains Cree relied on the land to survive. It was sacred and they recognized that every living thing was of importance. Plus they only used what they needed. Things never went to waste. A good lesson we SHOULD all be following today. I serve as an interpreter at the Center, and this is part of the written teachings, as we take the children through their many nature programs. Both sexes of the Snowy Owl have dark bars and spots although they are heavier on the larger female; Old males may be pure white. This usually silent bird will sometimes utter a shrill whistle and hoarse croak on breeding grounds. It nests north of the tree line, in the High Arctic from Alaska to Labrador. Its winter range extends roughly across the middle of North America, from its breeding range to northern United States. The Snowy Owl is the provincial bird of Quebec. Snowy Owls are nocturnal, but they hunt during the day. Their life cycle is intimately dependent on the abundance of lemmings, which form an important part of their food supply. In years when food is plentiful, These cycles generally occur every four or five years. Snowy Owls range in size from 52 to 70 cm (20 to 28 in.), and their wingspan ranges from 125 to 145 cm (49 to 57 in.). * Distribution – The snowy owl breeds in northern Alaska and in northernmost Canada; Winters are spent throughout Canada and in northern United States. The island in the distance is called Bird Island…Looking due north, to the left where the water meets the sky, is approximately 416 km (258 mi) to the distant shore. Interesting Facts Lake Winnipeg is a very large (24,514 square kilometers (9,465 sq mi)) lake in central North America, in the province of Manitoba, Canada, about 55 kilometres (34 mi) north of the city of Winnipeg. It is the largest lake within the borders of southern Canada, and it is part of the most undeveloped and pristine large watershed of southern Canada. It is the sixth-largest freshwater lake in Canada, but it is relatively shallow (mean depth of 12 m (39 ft), excluding a narrow 36 m (118 ft) deep channel between the northern and southern basins. It is the eleventh-largest freshwater lake on Earth. The east side of the lake has pristine boreal forests and rivers that are being promoted as a potential United Nations World Heritage Park. The lake is elongated in shape and looking to the left here, is 416 km (258 mi) from north to south, with remote sandy beaches, large limestone cliffs, and many bat caves in some areas. Manitoba Hydro uses the lake as one of the largest reservoirs in the world. There are many islands in the lake and most are undeveloped and pristine Camera Details: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi, 55mm Lens, Aperture exp 13.0, Shutter speed 1/400, ISO 200
