  • the ubiquitous gas pump…route 66 owes its identity to the car, but without the gas pump, there would be no way for the cars to get anywhere…of course, they were a seemingly simple pump device for dispensing gas, but it also had to calculate the amount of gas that was pumped and it had to do it in as safe a manner as possible…each brand created a unique design for the pumps that stood guard out front…and this was a time when an attendant pumped the gas, checked your oil and washed your windshield, service highly touted along the old route…and then there was the clean restroom…

  • route 66 defines america’s love of the automobile…along its 2448 miles many innovations serving the driving public sprang up to entice people off the road to spend a little of their travelin’ cash…the drive-in movie theater typifies this golden age of all things “car”...today a relatively small number of drive-ins continue to thrive…

  • there are vast stretches of route 66 in eastern california that seem endless and lifeless…here, in bagdad, stand two lonesome mailboxes…the decaying buildings just beyond this view suggest it has been quite some time since the last mail delivery…

  • the sun is slowly creeping into the morning sky…as we rouse from slumber thoughts turn to breakfast, a ritual of feeding the sleepy body to invigorate the mind…in our hurried state we sometimes dismiss the calming effect of a breakfast around the kitchen table and dash off toward work…some grab a cup of coffee and a donut in their dash, others slow down and slide into a booth at a comfy greasy spoon for something a bit more substantial…and to me, it is what is on the table that evokes a sense of possibilities, of a good belly warming morning meal proped up with exotic sticky spreads to splash upon hot toasty breads…I can almost taste it…

  • yes, we have bananas…bunches of bananas to top your cereal, fill the need for a tasty and healthy snack or decorate the fruit bowl in the middle of your dining room table…yes, we have bananas…

  • bikes offer an unusual visual opportunity…in the city, bikes come in all sizes, shapes and conditions…they work hard for the messenger on deadline, convenience for the commuter and exercise for those interested in staying in shape…and when all the hard pedaling is done, you will find bikes at rest…
