the ubiquitous gas pump…route 66 owes its identity to the car, but without the gas pump, there would be no way for the cars to get anywhere…of course, they were a seemingly simple pump device for dispensing gas, but it also had to calculate the amount of gas that was pumped and it had to do it in as safe a manner as possible…each brand created a unique design for the pumps that stood guard out front…and this was a time when an attendant pumped the gas, checked your oil and washed your windshield, service highly touted along the old route…and then there was the clean restroom…

there are vast stretches of route 66 in eastern california that seem endless and lifeless…here, in bagdad, stand two lonesome mailboxes…the decaying buildings just beyond this view suggest it has been quite some time since the last mail delivery…
