  • A baby Mandrill

  • This is Man Alone the mandrill. He lives in Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon. I had the priviledge of meeting him whilst working there. He used to live in very bad conditions – in a tiny cage where he couldn’t even turn round. Hence his name. The cage is now kept at the centre to show how much life has improved for him. Now he is leader of the group with lots of wives and babies! Taken with Nikon D50 and 70-300 mm lens All profits from the sale of this work will be donated to Wildlife-Appeal

  • I spent some time in December looking after rescued primates at Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon. I love the drill! And I love this mother with her little child which Julie Langford kindly enhanced I took this with my Nikon D50 and new 80-400mm 4.5-5.6 lens The male drill is one of the most colourful monkeys in the world. When he is grown up he has a red chin on a black face with raised grooves exaggerating the shape of his nose. Also, his bottom is pink, mauve and blue! These bright colours help his family follow him through the forest. The drill only lives in three countries: Cameroon’s Southwest Province, South East Nigeria and Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea. The drill is a highly endangered primate. A mother drill only has one young every six years, and a hunter can easily kill 30 Drills in a day. They are also losing their forest home

Males can weigh up to 60 lbs (30 kg), females about half as much (30lbs). Unusually large males can weigh 110 lbs (50 kg).[2] They can grow to be about 1 m long (39 in) and can survive up to 31 years in captivity. Females reach sexual maturity at about 3.5 years. / The Mandrill is found in the tropical rainforests of southern Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo. / The Mandrill is an omnivore and acquires its food by foraging (mainly plants, insects and smaller animals) from the ground as it is terrestrial. Its main natural predators are leopards, pythons and man. A large group of mandrills can cause significant damage to crops in a very short time, and where common they are widely perceived as pests. Although the Mandrill does not normally hunt larger prey, males have been observed to hunt and consume duiker (a small antelope). / ~Wikipedia / Panasonic FZ20 / 87mm, 1/125s, f/4.0, ISO :200

  • Mandrill residing at the Portland Zoo. He was quite taken with himself. The Mandrill is a primate of the Cercopithecidae ) family, closely related to the baboons and even more closely to the Drill.
