Literally translated, 马马虎虎 (mǎmǎ hǔhǔ) means “horse horse tiger tiger”, but roughly means “so-so” or “mediocre”. Buy it for your Mandarin-speaking friends (maybe even Kevin Rudd!) and they’ll smile quietly to themselves.

The name of the Mandarinfish comes from its extremely vivid colouration, evoking the robes of an Imperial Chinese mandarin. / This one is about 2.5cm long! / [True 1:1 Macro, taken with CANON 5D in Ikelite-Housing, SIGMA 105mm MACRO, 2 Ikelite DS125 strobes] Framing suggestion: / © aabz-imaging / ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Mandarin Fish (Synchiropus splendidus), Restorf Island reef, Kimbe Bay, New Britain, Papua New Guinea. Photographing Mandarin Fish requires a lot of patience, as they are quite small (this one was about 30mm long), shy and flit in and out of the coral rubble. It took 49 minutes lying quietly in one spot to get this shot. Nikon D300, 105mm Micro Nikkor, ISO 200, f/32 at 1/60 sec, Seacam housing, Seacam flash. I have just been featured in; The Urban Wildlife Group and The Nikon DSLR Users Group I went for a walk today over to the Forty Hall Estate in Enfield for a couple of hours and this beautiful male Mandarin Duck was gliding gracefully across the lake with his female in tow. I was so happy the way this one turned out. The weather was a little overcast but that gave a fantastic balanced light making the colour of this lovely duck stand out really well. I hope you like the shot and thank you so much for viewing my work, please come again soon. Acrylic on canvas paper . / The adult male is a striking and unmistakable bird. It has a red bill, large white crescent above the eye and reddish face and “whiskers”. The breast is purple with two vertical white bars, and the flanks ruddy, with two orange “sails” at the back.Mandarins are frequently featured in Oriental art and are regarded as a symbol of conjugal affection and fidelity. The Mandarin Duck symbol is also used in Chinese weddings, because in traditional Chinese lore they symbolize wedded bliss and fidelity.
