This was a spontaneous shot taken at a local Adelaide cafe on Rundle Street East in Kent Town one day when I was out with Dan. It was included in the series ‘When He’s Away’ and was a part of the ‘Living Queer in Adelaide’ group exhibition for the 2006 Feast Arts Festival there (Exibited at the Town Hall) I really like this one – human body against unyielding cement wall and rigid geometric lines. The theme that I was working on with the shots in this series was an analysis and exploration of sexuality – but more specifically gay male sexuality and the universal themes relating to the divide between public and private, acceptibility and unacceptibility, connection and disconnection, and of course human vulnerability / sensitivity and the structures and systems which confine or limit this. Another use for the transform tools in Photoshop – this time, no photographs used. I just drew a random shape with the pen tool. filled it with a blue, purple, grey gradient – and then tranformed like mad to get the shape of the head and wings. The eyes I put in with a circular marquee and the body and feet I drew in, again with the pen tool. / / Not as nasty looking as the fish, more of a wise old man look. / / Hope you like it.

With 6277 views 71 favouritings and 3 sales, this is probably by far my most popular image: / I shot it on my first digital camera, a Canon Powershot S80 compact in the main street of Kempsey NSW on a particularly trying road trip for work. It was a lucky shot, I just thought the billboard was a fairly self-reflexive thing to find in a rundown country town, but when this dejected guy limped into the shot it made it into a poignant statement. Having moved on in the equipment and (hopefully) skills aspects of my photographic practice due mainly to the encouragement I received here in the early days, I often look back at this image and see things I could improve with it. One of the assignments for a course I am doing is to convert an RGB image to greyscale. I’ve applied noise reduction, and unsharp mask, then tonal and exposure adjustments in the green channel. After converting to greyscale, I’ve despeckled it a bit and clone stamped out any larger specks that stand out more in greyscale. I’ve also cropped it a bit tighter and increased the resolution by decreasing the image size rather than interpolating. Wow, that was boring. Anyway, please enjoy the new mono version of Living. “You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake…” / / / / / / / /

The only thing that constitutes being “normal” is the fear of being judgement. We drown our own creative insanity in fear of what neighbors might say. Shame on us all.
