In rehearsal for the Adelaide Fringe Parade. We were a group of flaggers (www. flagmania.org) who were formed for the Gay and Lesbian Pride March in 2005. The group has evolved and will march in the Gay and Lesbian Pride March for the opening night of Feast (gay and lesbian arts festival) in November this year. The Fringe opening parade was just an opportunity to keep the magic alive.

Words and images by David Haviland. Thank you to MissKristy for giving me a nudge to combine my words and images. Although she was referring to another poem, when I started thinking of what image of mine to use I came to this one and the words just fell out. I have to admit to a love of trees and the solitary dead tree in the landscape, to me it does show pride and defiance that they are still standing.

I’ve been working out and trying to stay in shape for about 5 years now, and despite all that, I’m not even close to looking like the human tank that part of me still wishes I was. In a perfect world, I would look a little more like LL Cool J and less like a body pillow that belongs to someone with really bad insomnia. Recently, however, I looked at myself in the mirror and thought, “You know what? Screw whoever it was that came up with the insane idea that dudes have to look like they were sculpted out of stone in order to be called handsome! Maybe the mountain range underneath my skin might be a little understated, maybe it’s a little soft around the edges, but hell, why do I need to be ashamed of that? Let the dime-a-dozen hardcore bodybuilders keep those cumbersome masses of extra muscle on their bones – how many guys out there can be stocky, have curves, and still be tough, I ask you? This image is also the visual response/ counterpart to Hilton Briscoe’s poem entitled I’m Not Pretty Liberation from the stereotypical definition of male attractiveness, brothers and sisters – that’s what this one is about!
I am trying to expand my horizons + work with people. This is Phil Carlson, one of my friends from the gym. He’s workin’ on 4 hrs. sleep here so I know his thoughts without the penny!

Man with his dog watching the sunset. This is my husband, after a long bike ride with our German Shepherd, they’re winding down watching the sunset and I quietly got a photo of them. I love it when it’s beauty that isn’t staged. Taken alongside Last Mountain Lake (a.k.a. “Long Lake”), south central Saskatchewan, Canada

From the Portrait, and Winter in the Country Series…watercolour on Arches Not Paper.. “Mark is part of the story of four friends who set out for a Christmas weekend in the country..the first four chapters can be read by clicking on the links on the images seen below / The Bothy / The Grove / Lost / A Weekend in the Country
I had very little time today, as the final installation in the Empty Studio is getting really close and I am busy getting the room ready…...but I had to stop to paint, and I did this moolit scene with fountain pen inks and Mean Streak…it was an experience, as MS is invisible and you can’t see what you are doing, but I love the final result which is loose and free Moonlight bends over the black silence, / Making it bloom to wild-flowers of sound / That only green things can hear. / A wind sprawls over an orchard, / Frightening its silent litany to sound. / A thread of star-light has fallen to this tree / And curls among its leaves, tangling them to silence. . . . / Standing amidst these things, Beloved, / We feel the words our hearts cannot form......Maxwell Bodenheim
