  • A COLLECTION OF WILDLIFE IMAGES FROM MICK’S PIX PHOTOS

  • Marmots and pikas are the small mammals of the alpine realm. Pikas don’t hibernate, they must spend their brief summers gathering grasses and plants. When they gather plants, they stack them into tiny hay bales to dry in the sun, then store them for the winter. In larger pika communities, it’s not unusual for there to be disputes over ownership of the hay bales. These noisy conflicts are at times exploited by nearby predators. Pikas are another species (like marmots) that are considered altruistic – they selflessly keep themselves in danger to bark out a warning to neighbors. They also bark out a warning if you get too close to their little hay bales. They emit a surprisingly loud “EENK!!!” if you get too close. Larry is in the final stages of food preparation for winter. He spends most of his days now gathering and drying food. If he doesn’t gather enough food, he won’t survive the winter. Pikas are considered a “canary in the coal mine” species, as they’re very susceptible to climate change and increasing temperatures, and are considered an at-risk species. _________ Marmots are considered one of the few altruistic species on this planet – they seem to have a selfless concern for their peers. They demonstrate this by squeaking out a warning to their fellows – keeping themselves in danger to alert others. The squeak is a high pitched noise that can be surprisingly loud given their size. It’s common to hear them squeak as you move through their territory. Unfortunately, marmots and other alpine mammals (pikas, for instance) are at risk due to climate change.

  • PLEASE JOIN ME ON A TRAIL OF THE: THE AFRICAN ELEPHANT – Loxodonta Africana / Location captured: “The Kruger National Park”, South Africa. / Elephants have a highly developed social structure and family units are led by a cow elephant or matriarch. The matriarch is, by natural selection, the most experienced member of the group and automatically assumes leadership. The composition of the herd varies and one will find bulls of various ages in attendance. A bull may be distinguished from a cow by its rounded forehead; the cow’s forehead is angular. Both have tusks. Bulls leave the family unit at puberty (10 -12 years) and, in many instances, are driven out by the older cows.
