We came across several of / these Goannas during a / mallee road trip. More Australian wildlife here Read about my wildlife photography here
On a trip to the NSW small desert in the Mallee country Australia to help a PHD group of ecologists research mammals, snakes and lizards, birds and flora, I was able to take some time out and shoot. This part of Australia is haunting and beautiful. It’s isolated and somewhat scary, but inspirational.
This photo shows how quick;y the mallee shrublands of western NSW come back to life after a devastating wildfire. This re-growth Red Mallee Eucalyptus socialis is about 18 months after a fire reduced this area to dead trees! Nombinnie Nature Reserve, western NSW, AU. This image was taken during a study into the effects of fire on reptile communities in the mallee. Sea Lake railway station in Victoria’s Mallee is a long way from the sea but there is a salt lake!
This shot was taken around 10kms west of Coombah Roadhouse, which is about 130kms north of Wentworth in far western NSW, AU. The transmission line feeds power to the mining town of Broken Hill about 120kms to the north of here. The mallee comprises of Eucalyptus socialis and E.dumosa while the spinifex is Triodia scariosa and home to dozens of endangered species of flora and fauna. The Slender Mallee Blue tongue lizard Cyclodomorphus melanops is listed as an endangered species in NSW where it is found in mallee/spinifex communities and refuges within the spinifex clump. They are rarely seen as the species is solitary and nocturnal, and often wait in the cover of the spinifex clump from which they ambush their prey. This individual was trapped in spinifex north of Wentworth in far south-western NSW, AU during fauna surveys in October 2008. For better viewing click on ‘view larger’. A silhouette of a wind mill makes the foreground for this rare phenomenon. / The ring around the Moon is caused by the refraction of Moonlight (which of course is reflected sunlight) from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The shape of the ice crystals results in a focusing of the light into a ring. Since the ice crystals typically have the same shape, namely a hexagonal shape, the Moon ring is almost always the same size.
A celebration of the Native Orchids found in South Australia. 9 of these 12 orchids were photographed on Mount Barker Summit in the Adelaide Hills. 2 of them were photographed in the mallee scrub at Monarto, and 1 at Norton Summit.
One of my favourite roads through the mallee country in western NSW. The Mount Hope to Lake Cargelligo Road runs through Round Hill Nature Reserve, one of the best birding spots around (for mallee birds)! Enjoy…................ This Banded Green-Hood (Pterostylis sanguinea) was photographed in Mallee Scrub at Monarto.
Barb & I went for a drive up to Monarto today. There were showers about, which is a good thing for an area of reduced rainfall, and in between the showers we saw this beautiful rainbow. We also saw a stunning Scarlet Robin & a number of Malllee Ring-Neck Parrots – including a group of 5, which is quite unusual to see.

Daddy Long Legs, or Wispy Spider Orchid – Jonesiopsis capillata – Photographed in Mallee Scrub at Monarto, South Australia. They were quite small & incredibly wispy & delicate. It was wonderful to see them growing in groups like this! My uncle Da spotted them, & Barb & I photographed them :) Barb, you’ll have to remind me how to do the link! D’oh!
OK it may be a stupid title but my story behind this photo centres around the farmland around the wind turbines near Cape jervis. Deep Creek Conservation Park has left a big impact on me concerning what the environment was like before European settlement. I like how these few surviving mallee trees contrast against the rolling hills which seem to unravel before me. Almost defiant agaist the levelled landscape, showing us they are survivors. Lemon Orchid, or rabbit-ears, ( Thelymitra Antennifera ), a Sun Orchid. First Thelymita sighting of the season. Photographed in Mallee Scrub near Monarto, SA. Unfortunatly we were there early morning, trying to beat the terrible winds that have been around the last few weekends, so it hadn’t had enough sun to fully open. I was still very happy though!
Olive Pink started a botanical garden near the Todd River in Alice Springs in 1956. She worked on it with an aboriginal helper until she died in 1975. The botanical garden was taken over by the Norther Territory Government and opened to the public in 1985
