  • You can really loose your way when roaming through the mallee, especially on a cloudy day! This mallee is Red Mallee Eucalyptus socialis. The mallee vegetation community has become extremely fragmented and large remnants are rare. Fortunately, the largest area of mallee in NSW (about 120,000 hectares or 296,000 acres) is now conserved in three nature reserves (Yathong, Nombinnie and Round Hill Nature Reserves) which all share boundaries in western NSW and is home to many endangered species of flora and fauna. This shot was taken in this mallee block. For better viewing click on ‘view larger’

  • This is just one of the many tricks available to an ecologist. The combination is a plastic fence and some funnel traps. Its concept is simple: the reptile walks (or slides) along the ground, then gets to the fence unable to go forward, so they go left or right, and straight into one of these traps! Amongst the mallee we trapped three endangered reptile species: Jewelled Gecko, Marbled Headed Snake-lizard and Slender Mallee blue tongue lizard. As well as 30 species of reptile in total! But…...........dont go out and try this tommorow. You need a scientific license from the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water and an Animal Care and Ethics Authority from the NSW Department of Primary Industries. These traps were set up in the mallee north of Wentworth in south-western NSW, AU. Steve is the Principal Ecologist at EnviroKey providing specialist ecological services across Australia.

  • This is the driveway to the farm I grew up on as a child. We moved into the nearest town (Mildura) when I was 10 and My father sold this farm when I was 19. The house burnt down many years ago and has been replaced by a more modern home. I used to walk this drive down to these gates to catch the bus to school 10 km’s away.
