African Lion in captivity / Endangered species
Featured in All Things Black group / Silverback in captivity / Endangered species / Captured with Canon5d
The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a possibly irreversible population decline of 30 to 50% over the past two decades in its African range; populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not well-understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Lions have been kept in menageries since Roman times and have been a key species sought after and exhibited in zoos the world over since the late eighteenth century. Zoos are cooperating worldwide in breeding programs for the endangered Asiatic subspecies. The Fractalius Filter was applied to this image to achieve these results.

This was taken in a gator zoo in St Augustine, Florida. It has a free rookery inside where birds are free to come and go and nest. But the ducks have ponds and I do not know if they can fly or not. There is nothing overhead to stop them but I will classify them as being in a zoo unless I know different. So this will be classified as a captive fowl. No less beautiful than its free brothers…it seemed quite happy and well fed. There were other males and females around so it was not lonely.

a male northern cardinal displays all of his grandeur as he checks me out near the sunflower feeder. I love the “in you face” attitude he has, and his proudly displayed tuft of feathers.
love going back and review my old raw photos, nover know what I will discover. I shot this of a male cardinal sitting on a branch in November of 2007, and just discovered it. The only post processing involves converting from raw to jpeg, and a slight curves adjustment in raw.
This is made from three individual shots taken with my Olympus E-e camera, Sigma 50-500mm F/4.0 zoom lens, in my back yard. Each photo measures 8 inches by 10 inches. /
