If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands. / Douglas Adams Quote Wood Ducks / Wood Ducks —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- It took forever to finally get a closeup shot of him. He was so shy and kept flying across the lake. They were here at the city park during fall migration. They are not tame but truly wild ducks taking a quick break before traveling again. I was amazed to see them at the city lake were people walk all the time because of the fact they normally do not like to be near people. The only other times I have seen them is in more secluded areas and they always flew away before I was even close. I sat very still for over two hours and finally this wood duck drake swam close enough for me to get a great shot of him. I am so thankful for that wonderful day. / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / Let’s help keep our waterways clean and protected. a male northern cardinal sits out a snow storm in a pine tree, shot taken in winter of 2007. /
Dedicated to my favorite Baseball team, St. Louis Cardinals.
I was sitting near the bluebird house, hoping for a visit from the bluebirds, when to my surprise, this gorgeous male northern cardinal stops by for a visit. He sat long enough for me to snap several shots. / Northern cardinals are quite adaptable, able to live in hedgrows, woods, suburbs, and desert washes. It is our only crested bird with a conical beak, except for the Pyrrhuloxia fond in southwest. The bright red plumage and black throat is unmistakable in identifying the male. Cardinals dine on seeds, especially sunflower seeds, as well as insects. / / camera Olympus E-3 / lens Sigma 50-500mm f/4.0 / aperature priority / aperature f/8.0 / shutter speed 1/320 sec / ISO 200 / focal length 500mm / tripod/cable release used
Red Cardinal hanging out in on a branch at my home. It is quite rich in bird species in this area… The birds also appear a bit larger to me from this region compared to the same speicies I have seen thru other parts of the country.
