  • Taken in January 2005, just south of Perth, Scotland. I looked out the window here late one evening to see a “cloud” of luminous green oriented downwards – “that’s no cloud!” and 5mins later I was a couple of miles away in the middle of nowhere on the road south of Moncrieffe Hill, admiring the pretty greens and reds :)

  • As I’ve been feeling particularly biblical today, thought I’d post this collage I made from 26 photos taken around the Algarve, southern Portugal, including most of the animals from a zoo in the area. Lightning was shot during a storm from my bedroom window. Mountain scene/sky/lighthouse: Cape St. Vincent, Algarve; ship: Protimao harbour; crow: Colorado; driftwood: Sannibel, Florida… and the waterbuffalo were ambiotronic robots from the African River Safari at Disney in Orlando. Human figures on ship were drawn in with Photoshop paint tools. I spent lots of time making sure the lighting on all the elements looked as though coming from the same source… but that rainy Belgian weather has a way of keeping me long hours at the PC… hey, it’s rained for quite a few days now without stop… Uh oh, here we go again. How am I gonna round up all those animals in time…?!

  • Shot with a 35mm film with subsequent print scanned into Photoshop for a rigorous “enhancement” effort (fun and beneficial) due to such a rare capture. Clean-up was mandated. Shadow detail and full ranges of gray tones also were Photoshop candidates in retaining good contrast.

  • The last of the sun before two big storms moved into Oregon and caused major wind and flood damage. Shortly after taking this picture, the first of the two storms moved in. The coast was hit the hardest with winds up to 129 mph (279 kph) and torrential downpours. The storms hit throughout the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington). A short time after the first storm moved in, a bigger and more fierce storm rolled through causing even more damage to areas that were already flooded. A bad start to the winter season.

  • Did this as a favor for my friends at Wasabi Anime, for one of their stage productions. It’s obviously a parody of a rather ubiquitous coffee chain, as well as a Gundam reference. It was fun, and a couple folks commented that they would love to have a shirt of it. So there it is. It was kind of rushed, so it’s not the best vector art I’ve ever done, but it was fun. _

  • Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, here we have a fine specimen of a Caleana major (Flying Duck Orchid), an Australian native terrestrial orchid which grows in sandy alkaline heath-land on the east coast. The flowers are only ¾” (2cm) long, two flowers on a n 8” (20cm) stem and with only a single spear shaped leaf at ground level. When disturbed, the flowers drop their heads, lift their tails and curl up. This is to trap any pollinating insect inside until released perhaps hours later or even overnight. Because of their small size and drab colouring they are difficult to find. This one and a handful of others in the near vicinity were discovered by accident as I was attempting to photograph a different wildflower. Lucky me! This li’l quacker was photographed in the wild, along the Ocean Drive Fire Trail in the Queen’s Lake Nature Reserve at North Haven, NSW, Australia, on a lovely Spring afternoon, in the company of two friends from the Port Macquarie Panthers Camera Club., while on a wildflower hunt. To obtain the angle of shot to isolate the orchid from the background and to be able to get very close to this little flower, I was lying on my left side, resting on my shoulder, with Mr Fuji hand held, viewfinder hard against my glasses and using controlled breathing. The UV Filter was off and the screw-on Macro Lens was on to get as much of the orchid in the frame as possible. To make the shot I chose to go fully manual as previous attempts using aperture priority were giving me big problems with exposure due to the dark flower and the overcast lighting. Pop-up flash is not an option when using the screw-on Macro Lens and I didn’t even think of using my slave flash unit. (If I had, it would have been very hard to use the pop-up flash to set it off so it may not have worked). Fuji S5500: High resolution jpg, Macro Mode, f/2.8 @ 1/160sec, ISO100. / Photoshop CS. • FEATURED OCT 2009 EARTHKEEPERS / FEATURED OCT 2009 ALL COUNTRIES~WETLANDS, PONDS, LAKES & RIVERS / MADE TOP TEN POPULAR SHOT FOR THE DAY OCT 17 2009 / / / Lyrics Leonard Cohen; / Performed on Youtube by by Jeff Buckley This shot was taken under challenging circumstances, rainy conditions, cold and snowing at sea level a half hour after this shot was taken. Hand-held camera on deck of a small ferry-boat, plus Mick was holding me steady on the boat as I shot. My first experience of snow, shot last year in New Zealand en route to Doubtful Sound. Doubtful Sound is the second largest of the 14 fiords in Fiordland National Park. This is an area naturally high in fresh water inflows (7.6 metres of rain falls annually). The area features generally steep terrain that is heavily forested except for locations where surface rock exposures are extensive.wildlife to be found in Doubtful Sound includes fur seals and penguins (Fiordland crested and blue), or even rare large whales (Southern Right, Humpback, Minke, Sperm and some Beaked Whales). The waters of Doubtful Sound are also home to an abundance of sea creatures, including many species of fish, starfish, sea anemones and corals. It is perhaps best known for its black coral trees which occur in unusually shallow water for what is normally a deep water species.Doubtful Sound is unusual in that it contains two distinct layers of water that scarcely mix. The top few meters is fresh water, fed from the high inflows from the surrounding mountains, and stained brown with tannins from the forest. Below this is a layer of cold, heavy, saline water from the sea. The dark tannins in the fresh water layer makes it difficult for light to penetrate. Thus, many deep-sea species will grow in the comparatively shallow depths of the Sound.
