Art of a magician is to deceive.
16×20 colored pencil and ink on a grey matboard. Original is sold. / This was done around 20 years ago also and was an experiment. Seems I did a lot of experimenting 20 years ago!!
22×26 scratchboard. Original is NFS. / I ended up doing this particular piece two different times because the first one was sold at an art show before it even opened!! So I did the second one to see the differences.. and there were a lot. But this one hangs in my studio.. and my kids are fighting over who will get it when I’m gone!! Wonderful children, huh..
A sketch I did from a scene out of my favorite Bergman flick, ‘The Magician,’ starring Max Von Sydow and Ingrid Thulin.

Traveling on his way, the Fool first encounters a Magician. Skillful, self-confident, a powerful Magus with the infinite as a halo floating above his head, the Magician mesmerizes the Fool. When asked, the Fool gives over his bundled pack and stick to the Magician. Raising his wand to heaven, pointing his finger to Earth, the Magician calls on all powers; magically, the cloth of the pack unfolds upon the table, revealing its contents. And to the Fool’s eyes it is as if the Magician has created the future with a word. There are all the possibilities laid out, all the directions he can take. The cool, airy Sword of intellect and communication, the fiery Wand of spirituality and ambition, the overflowing Chalice of Love and emotions, the solid Pentacle of work, possessions and body. With these tools, the Fool can create anything, make anything of his life. But here’s the question, did the Magician create the tools, or were they already in the pack? Only the Magician knows – and on this mystery, our eloquent mage refuses to say a word. At #1, the Magician is the male power of creation, creation by willpower and desire. In that ancient sense, it is the ability to make things so just by speaking them aloud (“And God said ‘Let there be Light!’ and there was Light”). / —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- / To read more go to this site

A collaboration with Mark Walker who was generous enough to let me use his image…Shropshire Saturday Merlin, sage from another world, was a seer, magician, wise councillor and friend to three kings. But for all his wisdom was bewitched by the Lady of the Lake who turned his love to her own ends. She sapped his power and plundered his store of secret knowledge. He enabled Arthur’s ascencion to the throne by manipulating the Sword in the Stone and acted as his counsel in his early reign. It’s funny the way most people love the dead. Once you are dead, you are made for life.

An amibitious rabbit turning the tables on a magician. Maybe it’s a version of a fantasy about how people sometimes feel about their bosses…or possibly the rabbit is simply confident that he’s been an observer long enough and is now ready to take the stage.

Watercolor and pencil on illustration board, / 15×20 / 2009 Related work: / The Waterman: Unio Mystica This is the second panel of The Waterman triptych. While the central panel represents the Christ as the macrocosm, the side panels are the microcosm, represented by the Four Elements and their manifestation in the physical world. Ignis Aeris is the yang pillar, the elements Fire and Air. Volatile and oriented upward, these elements are connected to the realms of the abstract thinking and intuition. Fire is the energy, passion and primeval instincts, that need to be balanced by the intellect (Air) in order to manifest in a most constructive way. The certainty of the Divine, that comes from the heart and from a primal knowledge, needs to be shaped by the intellect in order to become less aggressive and to expand (the butterflies rising from the fire and flying upward). Only through a perfect combination of faith and reason we can access the Divine and understand Its Laws. At the basis of the picture, handling the creative power of Fire, we see the Magician of the Tarot, which I represented wearing the skin of Nemean Lion, just like Greek hero Herakles. He represents the first step in the Hero’s Journey, or that path that each one of us need to find out and go through in order to become Whole with the Universe. The Magician is the one who uses his power of will (Fire) and mental skills (Air) in order to find his own path.

(Please view large). / If any card in the Tarot is the Tarot, it is the Magician. It’s one of the most recognizable cards, always a favorite. It’s also the only card in the major arcana that refers to the minors with the “trumps” displayed upon his table. If the reader believes the Magician stands for the Querent, then the Querent either is, or is currently finding himself eloquent and charismatic at this time. Both verbally and in writing, the magician is clever, witty, inventive and persuasive.
The magic of will. Willpower never ceases to amaze, in both its positive and negative forms. Willpower can lift. / Willpower can divide.
Homage to C.S Lewis magical “Narnia Chronicles”. A childhood favourite of mine. In Watercolour/Ink ( January 2001 )
