  • Panorama of the town of Assisi. Stitched together with hugin from 17 vertical images. Practically all important buildings can be seen in this panorama from the Basilica San Francesco on the left, over the Rocca Maggiore on top, to the cathedral San Rufino and the basilica di Santa Chiara on the far left. To the right of San Rufino one can see the tower belonging to the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo (Palace of the People’s Captain) rise from among the roofs. Since the year 2000 the whole town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites (officially it is titled as “Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi and other Franciscan Sites”). / If you are interested in the complete list of reasons why it was chosen look here ++ Location: Assisi, Umbria, Italy (photo taken from a side road between Assisi and Santa Maria degli Angeli)

  • Taken at Villa Taranto – Lake Maggiore The Gardens of Villa Taranto / “A beautiful garden does not need to be big, but it should be the realization of one’s dream, even though it is only a couple of square metres large and it is situated on a balcony”. So explained Captain Neil Mc Eacharn, the man who created these marvellous gardens. Many thousands of plants, brought from the far corners of the world, and rare collections, some of them unique in Europe and acclimatized after long laborious efforts, have been arranged with art in this beautiful setting, between the mountains and the lake. / In facts, back in 1931 the Scottish Captain decided to buy the estate called “La Crocetta” from the Marquise of Sant’Elia to transform it into a specimen of English Garden, situated in a strip of Italy which could remind him of his native Scotland, though it has more softness and wealth of tones. This work had to meet two basic requirements: the aesthetical and the botanical one. Botanical exigencies, as the different vegetations had to find the most ideal conditions of ground and climate. The stages of the creation of the new gardens saw different working stages, until their termination in 1940. / The botanical patrimony of the gardens of Villa Taranto contains nearly 1.000 non autochthonous plants and almost 20.000 genera and varieties of particular botanical importance. / The Villa is not open to the public, since it is used as seat of the Prefecture of the new Province of Verbano- Cusio-Ossola. / Since 1952 the gardens have been open to the public, from April to October, and the constantly rising number of visitors has now reached over 150.000 per year. Facing Saint Mark Basin, the church plays a central role in the panorama from the Piazzetta. The first St George’s church dates back to the 8-9th century. In 982 the whole island was donated to a Benedictine monk, who founded the adjacent monastery. The present church was begun in 1566, and was not entirely finished before the death of Palladio in 1580. The façade was continued by Vincenzo Scamozzi based on the original architect’s designs and completed in 1610. The church, sometimes designated as a basilica, is a prime example of Palladio’s architectural style, and one of the finest churches he designed. The bell tower, first built in 1467, fell in 1774; the reconstruction was completed in 1791. The Benedictine monks still officiate in the church.

  • Isola Madre Isola Madre, at 220 m wide and 330 m long, is the largest island of the Isole Borromee archipelago which falls within the Italian part of the Alpine Lake Maggiore, in the Province of Verbano Cusio Ossola, Piedmont. The island is occupied by a number of buildings and architectural structures and is especially well-known for its gardens. In the past it was known as Isola di San Vittore and later as Isola Maggiore. / The Palazzo Borromeo was built in the sixteenth century on the remains of the early church, cemetery and perhaps castle of San Vittore (named after the martyr Victor Maurus). / The palace is surrounded by impressive gardens, the Giardini Botanici dell’Isola Madre, covering an area of eight hectares whose construction all’Inglese (in the English style) began in the late eighteenth century on the site of a citrus orchard. Particularly prized is the scala dei morti, or staircase of the dead, which in recent decades has been embellished with an important collection of Wisterias. / The family chapel of 1858 is also noteworthy; by contrast to that of Isola Bella, it contains no tombs or funerary monuments. • The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore is a basilica in Venice, Italy designed by Andrea Palladio and located on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Facing the Bacino di San Marco, the church plays a central role in the panorama from the Piazzetta. The first church dedicated to Saint George dates to the 8-9th century. The Benedictine Monastery of San Giorgio was established in 982, when the doge Tribuno Memmo donated the whole island to a monk, Giovanni Morosini. The monks drained the island’s marshes next to the church to get the ground for building. The present church was begun in 1566, and was not entirely finished before the death of Palladio in 1580. The façade was continued by Vincenzo Scamozzi based on the original architect’s designs and completed in 1610.
