Adults can be up to 7 feet and weigh anywhere from 396 to 595 pounds; adult females are generally larger than males. Pups usually weigh 24 to 33 pounds at birth and weigh up to 132 to 198 pounds within five to six weeks. The monk seal’s common name is derived from its folds of skin that look like a monk’s hood, and because it spends most of its time alone or in very small groups. Most Hawaiian Monk Seals live in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands – Kure Atoll, Midway Atoll, Pearl and Hermes Reef, Lisianski Island, Laysan Island, French Frigate Shoals, Gardner Pinnacles, Necker Island, and Nihoa Island. These atolls and islands are very remote and are either uninhabited or have little impact by humans, thus providing an ideal habitat for these easily disturbed creatures. The coral reefs found around these atolls and islands provide the monk seal with its food supply: spiny lobsters, octopuses, eels, and various reef fishes. Their enemies include humans, sharks, diseases, attacks from their own species, and marine debris such as lost fishing nets and plastic products. They spend most of their time in the ocean but like to rest on sandy beaches, and sometimes use beach vegetation as shelter from wind and rain. Monk seals are expert swimmers and divers; one seal was recorded diving into depths in the range of 66 and 96 fathoms (396 to 576 feet). The average monk seal dives 51.2 times per day. The life span of the Hawaiian Monk Seal is from 25-30 years. The Hawaiian Monk Seal recovery efforts are overseen by the National Marine Fisheries Service, in cooperation with other government and private organizations and universities. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages many remote islands as National Wildlife Refuges to protect their habitat. The Hawaiian Monk Seal was listed as an endangered species in 1976 under the Federal Endangered Species Act. And, in fact, does there exist a better image to describe the beauty of an immaculate Sapphire of purest blue? This gemstone exists in all the shades of blue skies, from the deep blue of evening skies to the bright and deep blue of a clear and beautiful summer sky, which charms all people. This colour, which is strongly associated with sapphire, is also linked to emotions such as sympathy and harmony, friendship and loyalty. These emotions belong to features which are permanent and reliable � emotions where overwhelming and fiery passion is not the main element, but rather composure, mutual understanding and unshakeable trust. Sapphire blue has thus become a colour related to anything permanent and reliable, and this is one of the reasons why women in many countries settle on Sapphire for their engagement rings. Sapphire symbolizes loyalty and faithfulness, while at the same time expressing love and yearning. The most famous musical example for this melancholic shade of blue can be found in George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”. Sapphire’s blue colour is also evoked where clear competence and controlled brainwork are the issue. Kaula’uo / Ulua / Mokapu Beach / Wailea / Maui Gold Coast / Hawai’i Copyright © Sharon Mau 2009 / All Rights Reserved This image is the result of an experiment in light and camera settings as I was trying to reproduce the atmospheric conditions of the moment. You may see my camera data below. Please let me know what you really think of it. These two beaches are accessible by the same path along the wonderful elevated boardwalk, although they have different names for each side of the beach. When you are facing makai, the ocean, to the right is Mokapu Beach, which lies just in front of the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort and to the left is Ulua Beach. These beaches are very popular places for walking, running, sunbathing, swimming and snorkeling, featuring sandy bottoms. In summer the water is wonderfully warm. It is a beautiful long stretch of golden sand, and the luxurious bronzed golden sand is reflecting the beautiful warm colours of sunset in this image. It was a peaceful evening on Maui’s Gold Coast. Ulua is name after the adult Crevalle fish. The Ulua fish is also known as Pompano. When the fish is less than 10 pounds, it is called Papio. The Ulua fish may be caught with a rod and reel from the shoreline and is considered one of the most sought after inshore fishes on the islands. It is delicious when breaded with a light seasoned flour and grilled or lightly sauteed with fresh lemon butter and dill weed. The original name of this lovely beach was Ke One Ulua (pronounced o-ney) / Like Polo Beach, Ulua is a name unfamiliar to Kanaka Maoli (Indigenous Hawaiians) and Kama’aina (long time residents) on Maui. The original name was Kaula’uo and that is what I prefer to call it as I believe the original name should be restored.
