When it’s too cute to be classed a garden snail. I’ve just uploaded a couple of photos I took last year, just after I got my groovy camera, before I worked out how it really worked!! / These tiny snails are only 4-5mm long and have wonderful spiral shells with the most beautiful markings. I haven’t seen them since as I moved house so am glad that I took these pics. The ants, millipedes and snails were all working together, crawling all over the birdbath bowl that was sitting on the ground. They snails’ shells actually wobble from side to side as they are crawling! I was so amazed by these tiny creatures. / It would be great to find out where else these snail are. Has anyone seen them?

I took a ‘couple’ of photos today. Thought I’d share my faves with you all! Why don’t you pop over and let me know what you think!! I’ll put the kettle on so you can have a cuppa while you browse (... your imagination will be required to actually drink your brew).

It has arrived!!! Yay!!! My canvas print of Petals of Gold and the cards… very very awesome!! The more I look at the canvas print the more I like it… So until I get a hook on the wall for it, I’ve got it hanging over my calendar. Tha’ts saying something in itself as my calendar has frogs all over it and doesn’t usually get covered for anything! Not even sticky notes!! The fact that it’s really light is great… instead of nails and hooks in the wall, I might use Velcro dots instead. These are great for rental places too as they can come off the walls again without leaving marks. Makes me want to buy more… but as money is an issue here, I’ll have to wait! Thank goodness you have cards now… BTW: Thanks Xavier and Underbelly for ‘donating’ towards my canvas print!! The cards are brilliant… just as Khylan and others have said they were! I was expecting just the front on the groovy card, but what you have done is so much better… they are professional and beautifully finished! All in all… Absolutely, brilliant, fabulous and excellent job all of you fantastic people!!! Thank you ;D After all these fab comments, I have to balance it out with this : Wouldn’t it be even more fab if the bubblewrap was red? ha ha… green is better than boring old clear though!! Don’t know if you can get red.

SaharaBelle is a new member to RB, but not much of a writer. Because I like her work (both in the kitchen :D and with a camera), I’m showing you some her amazing photography. Thankfully SaharaBelle made a few comments during the upload process – so I’ll divulge these with you. Basically, this post serves as an easy way for our family and friends to quickly see all the cards of her amazing photography. There will be more soon. In fact, some of my collection will moving across. Yes, I took credit for her work … with her permission! But now she is a member, she wants them back. Anyway, here are all the cards of our recent visit to the Wittunga National Park. I encourage people to leave nice comments on her work. Or critique’s. We’re always looking for extra help on how to take a better photograph! You might recognise this photograph! I cropped this one to a square image to make her avatar. I love this photograph … it’s so vibrant and almost blinding! What do you think?! / “This one will make a great Christmas card!”. Her words after this uploaded. / I suggested this shot – because she had the Macro-lens. It turned out a lot better than I ever expected. It helps that SaharaBelle made sure the blue sky was in the background of these shots, thereby allowing a lot more light to come through the ‘field of focus’. / Nice shadows in this one. The yellow stamen look like antenna … don’t they? / Hehe, nature’s feather duster! I suspect it would leave more pollen than it would remove! / I just love how this is the colours of the Australian flag! / This little bee is getting his money’s worth of nectar… / It took a while to think of a suitable title. But this choice works well. / Sometimes the title’s are just so apt. Yet come out of nowhere. / I originally suggested “Toilet Brush”, but apparently my humor was NOT appropriate. / I’m sure you can see why this title was chosen. This little bee probably wasn’t imprisoned at all, but they do look like bars around his face! / This is a flower in the process of blooming. When we return next weekend, I hope to capture these in full bloom! / Hehe, this little guy was filling up like a car at the petrol-pump! I’m sure he saw the camera coming toward him, but just had to get that nectar! / This amazing shot was incredibly lucky. With a dedicated macro lens, she was going to shoot just the flower … but found the little black bug inside. / This amazing little bee was sticking his face straight into the flower, digging all the nectar out. / We think this was an ant, but not real sure! He was swimming around the nectar, presumably doing the anty-paddle (doggy paddle, get it?!). / Here is that bee again. This was the last time we saw this guy before he flew back to the hive… / SaharaBelle tells me this is her favourite shot, and I agree. The detail in those wings is outstanding! / But this is not the end! SaharaBelle and I have plans for more day-trips, even with the SA Central group later this year! SaharaBelle and I hope you all (wink wink at friends and family!) like these cards enough to purchase a few.

I guess over the years I have developed a niche or love for photographing certain subjects more than others. I have a huge thing for hot rods, classic cars & trucks. It stems from a childhood spent at race tracks with my dad. I grew up in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s when hot cars and rock ‘n’ roll were king (and in my world they still are!). I’ll be sharing some of my favorite cars here. I also have a thing for getting into the “heart” of flowers. I find macro photography both fascinating and challenging. I enjoy getting out and about around San Diego photographing what I think is “America’s Finest City”. There are so many exciting places in this county…and many of them are free to enjoy! I don’t really enjoy photographing people. In fact, I can get a little annoyed when they are in my shot. ;) However if someone adds to the shot then I am pleased. I also love shooting portraits of my beautiful daughter because she doesn’t get annoyed with me. My sons are a different story however. I’m looking forward to sharing my photos and getting to know everyone here!

Check out this amazing photograph that my wife shot! / Well, after I pointed him out to her. This little guy landed on the reeds I was photographing … and didn’t want to leave. / But “SWMBO”: had the macro lens, so I quietly asked her to quickly but slowly move next to me. Thankfully Frank Sinatra decided to stick around for his photograph. But he didn’t stay for his autograph, there was no second shot! Not bad! Whaddiya think?! Frank Sinatra? Old Blue Eyes? Still wandering why we called him that? / Then go in for the LARGE view to see the size of that eye of his. He was watching us watching him!

I am letting all photographers in SYDNEY know that this weekend there will be a photography meet up at Bidjigal Reserve . There are a few bushwalking tracks which take you along mossy creeks, over little bridges, through eucalypt forests and banksia scrublands, etc. / There should be something to keep most nature photographers happy(macro to landscape, plants and animals). I am hoping this will be a fun day where a bunch of like minded people can meet up and do what they enjoy. I am welcoming all photographers to this meet-up, it doesn’t matter if you have only just got your very first point-and-shoot and am just learning the basics, or if you are a top-notch professional or if you enjoy using toy cameras or anything in between. I am just wondering if there is anybody interested in coming along on SATURDAY May 16th 2009? List of attendees: / Me / Peter Martin ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Well, the meet up has been and gone. Unfortunately there was not much interest- hopefully that means everyone was having an enjoyable day over on Cockatoo Island. / It was a very windy day, but we were sheltered walking in the valley and along the creek for the morning. There were more fungi than the last time i was in the area so that gave some good results. Here are a few photos from the meet-up.

After recently purchasing a Nikon D200 I have been looking at exploring ways I can produce good macro shots without the expense of a $1,000 lens. Not sure if I’ve found it but definitely have a look at the macro tubes. I just paid $12 on ebay and am getting some good results. May be worth a look: Last 3 images of my gallery Paul red bubble

We have all seen close up photographs of flowers, insects or household items and sometimes wondered how did the artist get that shot. So …
We have all seen close up photographs of flowers, insects or household items and sometimes wondered how did the artist get that shot. So let’s examine close up photography. We have all noted that the closer we get to a subject, the larger it appears in the viewfinder. The problem we soon encounter is that the lens can’t focus as close as we want to be to the subject. We could use a micro lens that will focus close enough to give us a 1:1 reproduction on the film or digital device. Or we could add extension tubes or a bellows unit to increase the magnification beyond 1:1. Micro or Macro lens can be fixed focal length or zoom lenses. Some focus continually from infinity down to 1:1, others requires setting the camera for micro or macro work. They are the easiest to use and can often be hand held for quick shooting. / Extension tubes are hollow tubes that are mounted between your lens and the camera body. They come in various lengths from 6mm to 30mm and can be stacked for greater magnification. They are the least expensive means to achieve close up work. Nature photographers will often mount a extension tube on their 300-600mm lens to allow focusing closer than the typical 20’ offered by longer lens, this makes a great combo for photographing small birds. / Bellows units have two stages mounted to a common rail and connected by a light tight bellows material. The rear stage holds the camera while the front stage mounts the lens. The variable extension capable makes it possible to focus to the front element of the lens.’ / Remember from our depth of field discussion that DOF decrease as you focus closer so you may want to stop the lens down to increase the sharpness. This will cause a decrease in shutter speed requiring that your camera be well supported, usually with a tripod. Backgrounds can be distracting so I will usually carry a background with me. A small black towel can be draped as a background or used to cover your hand while holding a flower stem steady. I also carry a multi sided collapsible reflector with me that often becomes a background. Lighting can be a little tricky particularly when the camera or lens is close enough to block your prime light source. Your portable reflector can be used to bounce light into the subject. Carry a remote cord for your flash and move it away from the camera to fully light the subject and create more dramatic lighting. Focusing is often more easily accomplished by moving the camera rather than attempting to focus the lens. / Holding the subject is sometimes necessary so I use a combination of foam, sponges, toothpicks, small wires and hot melt glue to make a stage for some objects. This is just a starting point, try out various techniques to find out what works best for you and create a new comfort zone for shooting great pix. / Happy shooting Larry Grayam
